9/24

Beat Sheib. General Patton and British General Wilson have made undemocratic statements concerning Europe. Greek strikes are winning some concessions. Msgr. Ryan, liberal Catholic leader and fur union leader Begoon died recently. Lillian saw "The Valley of Decision" with Greer Garson and Gregory Peck. Good but the book has been emasculated. I went to the Garden for the Rally for Spain. It was to help refugees in France and break relations with Franco. Speakers were some Broadway stars, Dr. Barsky J Steel, L. Sergio, V. Sheean, M. Quill, I. de Palencia Ed Robinson of the Lincoln Brigade, N. Corwin, N. Novikov of the Soviet Embassy. Prof. Laski spoke from England. Co-chairmen were J. Ferrer and B. Crum. Entertainment by the C.I.O. Chorus and K. Spencer. Such international solidarity, symbolized by thousands of Americans supporting over a period of ten years democracy-loving Spaniards whom they will never see, giving of their time and money for the cause of democracy thousands of miles away is an inspiration which serves to buoy one's courage to continue the struggle for a peaceful world in the face of any obstacle or setback.
