Mar 22 Sunday We went to Minnie's house with Sam and Molly to pay a condolence visit. Then to mom and pops where Harry Lil and the kids and Abe & Blume were also present. Zapotocky succeeded Gottwald as President of Czechoslovakia. Sylvia cajoled Lillian into taking her to the temple for the last day of the bazaar as she wanted to see the raffle which she expected to win and there were still things to be bought. Sylvia gambled another 60¢ away. Lillian bought her another doll for her collection - her fourth.
Mar 23 Raoul Dufy is dead at 75.
Mar 24 The heaviest fighting of 1953 opened in Korea. The South African Supreme Court ruled that Natives must receive equal facilities with whites or be freed from segregation.
Mar 25 Lillian went downtown and got an umbrella for Sylvia and cup and saucer sets for Mike and Sam. The City approved Dewey's proposal for a Transit Authority but rejected the payroll tax. Paris raided Communist offices for the Party's stand against the war in Indo China. Israel at the UN denounced the Soviet Bloc's anti semitism. Browder, William Mandel and James Allen clashed with McCarthy at hearings before his Committee. A Czech plane landed in Germany with 26 passengers. The four who seized the plane and three passengers elected to seek political asylum. Hollywood hearings before the "UnAmercan" Comm. heard the same old stories of Communist domination of the movie industry in the 30's and 40's. Queen Mary is dead at 85.
Mar 26 Sylvia and others in her class are resentful of their teacher Miss Dunn. They charge her with favoritism and call her Miss Dumb.
Mar 27 Korean fighting has reached a bitter tempo in the last week as hundreds are killed daily in battles for hills. A vaccine against 'polio' was announced. Dr Jonas Salk headed the scientists who developed it. Dashiell Hammett, Langston Hughes and Ed Seaver testified before the Senate Committee. The latter two said they had lost their sympathy toward Russia.
Mar 28 Sylvia went on another cook-out to Staten Island. Eugene went out to play ball with Larry when the latter called him up.
My father started a "diary" in 1945 (more accurately, a journal, covering both family and current events), and I'm going to see if this is a decent way to publish it. Since I'm doing it as a blog, to get to the beginning of the journal, you have to go to the beginning of the blog.
