4/15-4/21/51

She saw the doctor today who told her to sleep on a board. Peggy "played the piano" and danced. The kids played some pieces and a duet. We watched the Dodgers beat the Yanks and sensational Mickey Mantle hit three singles and a homer.

Apr. 16 Eugene got his report card which showed an improvement in Arith (94) and all 90 or over. Sen. Cain asked open war on Korea's neighbors.

Apr 17 Sylvia's report card was the usual all 'S' card. MacArthur is being paraded and feted in Honolulu. Senate Republicans asked a probe of our foreign policy. North Korea cabled the U.N. proposing a peace parley.

4/8-4/14/51

Apr. 8 Sunday We went to the Oxford today to see "The Mudlark" with Alec Guiness [sic] and Irene Dunne. A little street Arab brings Queen Victoria (Irene Dunne) out of her seclusion. Guiness is Disraeli. Also "The Man who Cheated himself" with Lee Cobb and Jane Wyatt. At home we had tongue and trimmings in front of the television set. MacArthur's call for the use of Chiang's troops has again loosed a storm of protest especially in England. The Cal. U. loyalty oath was declared invalid and professors who had been discharged for refusing to sign it were order re-hired. Truman picked a new Mobilization Board and labor returned to it with Green, Murray, Reuther and Meany accepting posts.

Apr. 9 I had a bad night with a stuffed nose. When I came home at 2 o'clock, exhausted I stayed home from work. "Red" Counter attacks forced Allied units back in one front. Israel Syria hostilities have broken out in the de-militarized area. France banned the Partisans of Peace. The state opened a probe of youth dope addiction.

Apr 10 We called Dr. Holzman today as my temperature remained. He said I had a general virus in my throat, nose and stomach. He gave me a shot of penicillin. He prescribed neo-synephrin, gargling with Dobell's solution ..., terramycin (10 tablets for $5.) a light liquid diet, a little white cereal, tea, skimmed milk, toast and a shot of whiskey at night. My temp was 101.5 when he took it. The Chinese opened dam gates but it failed to halt the Allies. The Supreme Court stayed the execution of two Negros on the basis of discrimination in the jury selection and a terrorist atmosphere in the town.

April 11 I felt better this morning as my stomach finally lost its soreness and my nose cleared up. My temp went down to 99°. In a sensational move, Truman fired Gen MacArthur from all his leading positions in the Far East, including direction of the Korean war. Gen M.B. Ridgway was named to succeed him. The House voted to scrap the Admin. U.M.T. and set up a commission to draft a U.M.T. plan. Movie star Sterling Hayden told the House UnAmerican Comm. that he ignorantly joined the C.P. in 1940 and quit it six months later in disgust. He named other Hollywood figures including Karen Morley who were members. At the "Trenton Six" trial, defendant Collis English, his sister Mrs. Berson Mitchell and his mother all collapsed within minutes of each other. The voluntariness of the original confessions was again attacked by Arthur Garfield Hays.

April 12 My highest temp. yesterday was 99.8°. This morning I had coffee with my breakfast in the kitchen. Truman in a nationwide broadcast said he fired MacArthur to balk a world war. Some Republican congressmen talked of impeachment of the President. Actor Will Geer and writer Robert Lees refused to answer questions in the latest Hollywood "Red" probe. The City Council voted the 3% Sales Tax 19-6 in spite of the storm of protest its suggestion had produced. 5 ex-firemen were held in a $500,000 extortion shakedown. The A.P. named an All time All American Football team End - Hutson and Oosterbaan, Tackles - Nagurski and Henry, Guards Heffelfinger and Suffridge, Center - Schultz QB - Eckersall H.B. Grange and Nevers F.B. Jim Thorpe. The Drama Circle Critics Awards were given to "Darkness at Noon" Sidney Kingsley 's adaptation of Arthur Koestler's Anti-Communist Novel and "Guys and Dolls" in the musical field. Sam Rosoff is dead.

April 13 I was out of bed most of yesterday. My temp. was normal. Sylvia's class went to the public library where they heard a story read to them. It was a long poem "If I was in charge of the Zoo". Sylvia has two gold stars for submitting excellent reports. She is the only one. Sen. Taft. asked for war on China to avert a third world war! Richard J. Collins named twenty as "Reds" at the Hollywood probe. Those included were Buddy Schulberg, Ring Lardner Jr., JH Lawson, Cole, Ornitz, Maltz, R Rossen, Tuttle, Gordon Kahn, Bescovics [?], Abe Polonski [sic], Jarrico, Waldo Salt & wife. Dic [sic] Feurtado, former L.I.U. player was the latest to be picked up for fixing games. Played a chess game with Eugene.

The additional spacing between lines is apparently due to the extra size exclamation point I used, trying to image Dad's large exclamation point. I didn't like the spacing, but even when I removed it, the spacing remained, so I stayed true to Dad's large exclamation point.

April 14 The kids went with Betty Ann, Cookie, Kathy & Derry to the Kingsbridge to see Dean Martin & Jerry Lewis in "At war with the Army". Also "High Lonesome". MacArthur's opponents and partisans are battling over the historic "dismissal". Many "rightists" are planning to make a national hero out of him on his return. Victor Killian, Fred Grafe Waldo Salt and Paul Jarrico stood their ground in the Hollywood "red" probe. The Judge in the "Trenton Six" trial threw out the confessions of three of the defendants as not voluntary. Bevin is dead at 71.

He charged troops were massing on the Manchurian border. A witness described the 'Trenton Six' of [sic] having the appearance of being drugged when they signed murder confessions. This conflicts with police witnesses.

Feb 4 Sunday We went over to Sam and Molly's for a visit where we had blintzes and cream. Then we all taxied here where we saw television.

Feb 5 Bloody fighting raged eight miles South of Seoul. Seoul itself is almost deserted. The last of the "Martinsville Seven" went to their death in spite of demonstrations and pleas in many cities. Ford prices are rising in spite of "price control". Sylvia's report card showed all S's and excellent in 'reading'.

Feb 7 Home from work. Chinese Communists fell back to the Seoul line. 84 were killed and 400 injured in another railroad wreck. A Penn. train was derailed on a temporary overpass and plunged 20 feet to the street below at Woodbridge N.J. At the 'Trenton Six' trial the key issue was confession by police coercion. The railroad strike outlook was better as some 'sick' trainmen returned to work and some demands were eased. The Nevada Atom bomb trial blasts ended with a fifth and biggest blast. Repercussions were felt hundreds of miles away. Joe Louis defeated Omelio Agramonte in ten rounds.

Feb 8 Sylvia's class wrote compositions about their home. Sylvia wrote that she liked her piano best and wanted to be a pianist. The next best thing she liked in her home was the television set. She drew a picture of the room with herself playing the piano and music coming out of the back. Also the television set and 'N.B.C.' on. Her picture and composition won praise from the teacher and ass't principal. The picture was hung up and she was asked to read the compo. aloud. At the 'Trenton Six' trial, testimony showed the defendants not at the scene of the murder. Remington was found guilty of perjury on the first ballot.

Feb 9 The D.A. accused the Penn. R.R. of "a complete and indifferent disregard for human life" A trap was tightened on the Chinese at Seoul. Remington got 8 years in jail and a $5000 fine. Thyssen is dead at 77. Read "The Diplomat" Richard [sic] Aldridge.

"The Diplomat" was written by James Aldridge. Don't know who he was thinking of.

1/28-2/3/51

Jan 28 Sunday  Lil ... has a cold now. We went to Mom's for dinner. Lil Harry and the kids also there. Lil gave Eugene some undershirts and Lone Ranger books for his birthday. We gave them a serving tray in appreciation for Harry's work on the lamps. Peggy stole the show. She sang danced and acted, making up her own words and making motions with her hands. Sylvia and Susan also recited. I played Eugene and Pop simultaneous chess games, quitting with advantages over both.

I never forgot that my Aunt Lil gave me Lone Ranger books (not just the typical clothing) for my birthday, and from then on considered her my favorite aunt.

Jan 29 Sylvia played "The Bells" in the auditorium today. Chinese counter attacks slowed up the UN's 5-day offensive. Von Mannerheim is dead at 83.

Jan 30 Syl played "Echoes of the Canyon" rather than "The Bells". Mrs Mottelson [sic] said it was just beautiful. She was the only one who had volunteered to play of the three classes. Our fleet shelled Korea's East coast. On the ground we continued on the offensive. Russia warned that the U.S. resolution branding China an aggressor would mean war.

It was Motelson, not Mottelson; Dad got it correct a couple of times earlier.

The UN branded China an aggressor 44-7 with 8 abstentions. India voted 'No'. Pocket book reprints of Howard Fast's novels will be junked. Feb 2 While we are showing clemency to the Nazis the "Martinsville Seven" will die. Picketing and demonstrations and pleas have been of no avail in saving the seven framed up Negroes on a rape charge. England warned against sanctions for China at the U.N. The R.R. strike has caused a mail embargo, much hardship for consumers and travellers [sic]. Viet Minh suicide patrols fired on a U.S. carrier delivering supplies to the French

We went out to the Chinese restaurant on the corner for dinner but the kids eat little of the chow mein. At home I played Eugene some chess then Lil & Sil beat me and Gene at "Pisha Paysha". Lil read "The Show Must Go On" Elmer Rice.

1/14-1/20/51

Jan 14 We had a little scene with Sylvia about a missing quarter. She had had to give Lillian 69¢ for the ruined powder and had apparently taken the quarter to make up for it. She will admit nothing however. Money is taking on too great an importance to her. Lillian went along with her and the Sunday School class to the Jewish Museum. I waited for Eugene to get home from his class and we went down to Allen St. We all met at Mike & Evelyn for dinner (Eugene and I met Lil & Sil on the 'F' train at 4th st. by accident. Lil took Eugene and I went to Allen st). Molly and Sam never came as Molly was not well. Mike was working and came at 6:30 PM. We had a nice dinner and a nice time. Everyone played the piano. Economic Stabilization Chief Valentine was fired and Eric Johnston named to succeed him heralding a price-wage freeze. Dartmouth classmates testified in Remington's defense. Lil read "The Professor's Umbrella" Mary Jane Ward.

Jan 13 Sylvia had been warned many times to not to touch Lillian's things but she looked into a box of powder on the shelf in the bathroom and half of it spilled. She got quite a scolding and had to pay for a new box (69¢) which she protested against very strongly. In tears she argued that not all of it had spilled. Bobby came up to play with Eugene and they asked permission to participate in their favorite pastime - wrestling. British Commonwealth Prime Ministers in conference asked peace talks now and re-armament of Germany and Japan. Truman asked for a great tax increase and a greater Army. The kids, especially Eugene, enjoyed it very much.

Dec 3 Sunday We went over to Mom's where we had a surprise party for our anniversary and Max Guzman's birthday. The Beckers, A. Edelstein, Bardes', Guzmans, Thaws, Goodes and Sandra were there. All the kids got presents from everyone. These included puzzles, dredels [sic], dolls, dollar bills etc. We got two candy dishes and a water pitcher. Eugene and Sylvia sang Chanakah songs. Pop took us back and forth. At home we lit the kids' menorahs while Eugene recited the "Brocha".

Dec 4 Eugene called me at 4 AM. When I came to his bed he said Sylvia had told him to call. I came over to her and she told me she "threw up". She had been quiet as a church mouse. Lillian cleaned up the mess. She threw up twice more before morning. Eugene went into my bed but couldn't sleep there. Sylvia complained of a belly-ache and had 100.8 at noon. Eugene stayed home from school also as it was a rainy day. Americans began to evacuate Pyongyang, former North Korean capital as the Communist army approached. "Liberal" Senators Morse and O'Mahoney called for use of the atom bomb on Russia. Truman held continuous parleys with his top-level advisers. The Daily Worker obtained a court order barring action in a vote to ban the paper from the news stands.

Dec 5 Sylvia stayed home today again but was much better. Truman and Attlee met and announced their determination to come to a full accord on the world crisis. American troops headed for Seoul. Canada warned the US against using the atom bomb.

Dec 6 Eugene's report card showed continued excellence in all subjects except for an 87% in Arithmetic. Sylvia got all S's in hers. American troops retreated across the 38th parallel as "Reds" entered burning Pyongyang. Our jets killed 2000 Chinese crossing the Taedong River. There are many reports that we will not use the A Bomb against the Chinese. Asian and Arab States called on the Chinese to stop at the parallel. Judith Coplon's conviction was upset and a new trial ordered on the grounds that she was arrested without a warrant and evidence was gotten by wiretapping.

Dec 7 Lillian went to the P.T.A. bazaar last night with the kids. She bought a doll's dress for Sylvia $1.39, a game called Deavols [?] for Eugene 69¢, a scarf for me and half a cake. She also bought new linoleum for the kitchen at Imperial. The cost was $15 including $2.50 for laying it. Marines and G.I's linked up in an attempt to break out of the Red traps. Many groups are asking the US to get out of Korea. Truman and Attlee agreed to build up the Atlantic defences as the No 1 concern of the coalition and replace MacArthur ultimately. Sen McCarthy asked for war on China using Chiang's troops and ouster of Marshall.

Dec 8 Trapped Marines and G.I's opened a new escape drive to the coast. UN forces losses have been tremendous. U.S. casualties are now reported as 32000. The U.S. is pressing for a blockade of China but England is hesitant. We are also asking the UN to brand China as an aggressor but many countries are objecting.

Dec 9 The kids and Lil lit the candles in both menorahs every night while Eugene said the blessings. Sylvia got a pair of suede shoes at Miles today $4.45. American troops in Korea are being prepared for evacuation by sea. Millions of refugees are on the move in Korea. The Truman-Attlee negotiations are expected to result in an agreement to withdraw from Korea entirely.

Acheson and Austin warned the country and the world of the danger of a major war. Joe Louis made a second comeback fight winning a decision over Cesar Brion. It was a sad affair.

Dec 1 A new 80,000 man attack by the Chinese Reds surrounded marines of three regiments. Pres. Truman announced that use of the Atom bomb against China is under consideration. This statement was later clarified to say that there was no change in the A-bomb situation. Europe was disturbed by the implications of Truman's statement. Russia vetoed the UN's resolution calling for China's withdrawal from Korea. Hundreds of youths and thousands of women invaded the Lake Success led by Paul Robeson Jr & Dr. Clementine Paoloni to demonstrate for peace. Rent Administrator McGoldrick issued his regulations permitting increases for "severe hardships". The State Board [sic] of Appeals upheld the Feinberg Law's constitutionality.

Dec 2 For the first time since we got the television set last March we went to the movies. We saw "No Way Out" a gripping drama about a Negro doctor at a "white" hospital and "Baron of Arizona" about the man who laid fraudulent claim to the state of Arizona. Sidney Poitier, Richard Widmark & Linda Darnell starred in the first and Vincent Price in the second. India's and China's UN delegates held a secret conference. Pleven's Cabinet survived on a vote of confidence 347-184. Attlee asked for a 5 power conference including Red China. In the war, eight Chinese Communist divisions struck for the UN Army's flank. Truman asked $18000,000,000 for the war.
