3/18-3/24/51

Mar 18 Sunday Mom and Pop left for Florida this morning with Tante Blume and Mr Sandler. Costello Adonis and Erickson will be cited for contempt for refusing to answer certain questions in the crime investigation. The U.N. officially set up the 14 Nation Peace Observation Comm. We visited the Botanical Gardens to see the Easter Exhibit. We stood on line 45 minutes before we got to the scene of three live bunnies, a tremendous Easter egg, a sandpile for the bunnies, a little brook, etc. The nation is agog over the revelations over television of the crookedness which permeates our nations politics. Morrison replaced the ailing Bevin.

My impression is that Dad was NOT impressed by the Easter display. 

Mar 19 Lil and Eugene went back to Dr Fishman's where they got prescriptions for glasses. Reds were in full retreat toward the parallel. In the retrial of the "Trenton Six" it was charged the prosecutor had buried evidence clearing the defendants. Brigham Young U. won the N.I.T. over Dayton U 62-43. Roland Minson of B.Y.U. won the M.V.P. award.

Mar 20 O'Dwyer at the Kefauver hearings admitted Costello's pal helped him in the Mayoralty race. He also said he gave jobs to Costello's friends.

Mar 21 "Red" resistance toughened. La Prensa was formally taken over by Peronistas. The state's star witness in the "Trenton Six" trial reversed herself in an important point.

Mar 22 JP Crane head of the Firemens Assoc'n testified that he gave O'Dwyer $10,000 and Moran $55,000. Police Chief Murphy is also linked to a mobster, it is hinted. The "UnAmerican Comm." hearings opened in Hollywood with Larry Parks admitting he joined the C.P. in 1941 but left it later. Howard DaSilva and Gale Sondergaard however refused to answer questions on grounds of self-incrimination.

Mar 23 Lil and Eugene got their glasses at the Medical Arts Opticians on Tremont and the Concourse. Lil got bi-focals with her own frames $16. Eugene got lenses and a frame $13. England approved the crossing of the 38th parallel if necessary. Communist and Non-Communist Unions are on strike in France on busses, subways and railways. Wages are the issue. Prensa publisher Dr. Paz has fled the Peron police. Water Commissioner Moran resigned but O'Dwyer held his ground after the crime investigation revelations. Crane charged that Mayor Impellitteri and Police Chief Murphy had underworld ties. At the "Trenton Six' trial police witnesses gave testimony which demolished the prosecutor's case against the defendants leaving him "confused". At the spy trial defendant Julius Rosenberg denied all charges but refused to answer on his Communist connections on constitutional grounds. U.S. parachute troops dropped behind Chinese lines near Seoul cutting off thousands. Alger Hiss started his 5-year term. Mengelberg is dead at 79.

Mar 24 Lillian re-covered the folding chairs. MacArthur made a bid for a peace parley wih the "Communists". France raised basic wages from 18 to 21¢ in the face of widespread strikes. Film writer Paul Jarrico said he would defy the inquisitors at the Hollywood hearings. Truman was under pressure to oust O'Dwyer as Mexican Ambassador. Yesterday Lil and the kids had lunch at Madeline Gallins as it was Joyce's birthday. Kentucky won the NCAA over Kansas 68-58.

Mar 11 Sunday We went over to Mom and Pop's as they are leaving for Florida next Sunday. Eugene won a chess game from me, playing very well. Lil and the kids were there but Harry had a cold.

Mar 12 Lil got a dress in Alexander's for $3. Also some more boy scout supplies for Eugene. She got Sylvia two blouses and an Easter straw hat with which she is in ecstasy. Chinese fought back desperately in Korea. The Senate was informed in a subcommittee report how the Taft-Hartley Act is destroying unions. Queuille formed a new French gov't.

Mar 13 Lillian went to the school where a Junior High School P.T.A. rep. spoke. Only 30 out of 150 eligibles made R.A. The minimum I.Q. was 130. Spanish workers made a general strike against high prices. The crime investigation circus, being televised, heard charges that Costello picked Mayors and racketeers ran the city. Dave Greenglass testified he gave the Rosenbergs and Sobell a description of the atom bomb for Russian use. Harold Bauer is dead 77.

Mar 14 Frank Costello refused to tell his net worth and faces contempt charges. Happy Chandler is out as baseball Commissioner as the Major League owners rejected him 7-9 with 12 votes necessary.

Mar 15 SoKoreans re-entered Seoul which was given up without a fight by the Northerners. Spanish authorities ordered retaliations for the first post-Franco strike. Workers will be docked for time lost and those arrested will be discharged. An earthquake terrified Northern Europe. A top O'Dwyer aide was linked to bookies in the '49 election at the televised crime investigation. The state "loyalty" bill was passed and sent to Dewey. Russia revised its proposals for the agenda for the "Big 4" meeting bringing hope of an accord. Lillian went to the Hotel Capitol by bus with other parents to hear a protest rally on the lack of new schools and low teacher pay. Members of the Boards of Ed. and Estimate were present. Sylvia got an automatic pencil from her teacher for being the best girl in class. John Bratton won the N.B.A. Welterweight champ. by outpointing Ch. Fusari.

Mar 16 The Republican dominated Legislature passed the "dictatorship Bill" - Dewey's civil defense bill which includes seizure of private property. The French Assembly approved a new election law which is aimed at the C.P. Frank Costello walked out of the crime investigation hearings claiming illness. Willy McGee received another reprieve from the chair when Justice Black ordered the stay after hearing charges that the conviction was brought about by perjured evidence and that Mississippi reserved the death sentence for rape for Negroes only. Columbia scientist William Perl was arrested and indicted for perjury in the atom bomb spy hearings. Lillian gave Sylvia a home permanent.

Mar 17 Eugene won his second straight chess game from me. The State Assembly woted to increase the sales tax from 2 to 3%. O'Dwyer's pal J.J. Moran was tied to Irv Sherman, friend of Costello and Louis Weber, numbers operator. Britain asked the U.S. to stop at the parallel and negotiate peace.

Mar 4 Sunday We had quite a bit of trouble with Sylvia. She is trying to defy our authority and we have to take stringent measures. She is also very slow in the morning.

Mar 5 Revolts have begun and are spreading all over French Morocco according to reports which claimed the French had shelled Fez. The basketball scandal spread to the coast.

Mar 6 Deprivation of television seems to have had an effect on Sylvia and she was dressed much faster this week. The Senate rejected amendments to the 18 yr. old draft. North Koreans were routed in the mountains. The Big Four Foreign Ministers met in a preliminary conference to work out a program for an official meeting. Sylvia got red shoes at Miles - Size 3D $4.50 Lillian bought a small oven baker $5.

Mar 7 A split developed on the agenda for the coming 'Big 4' meeting. Ivor Novello is dead at 57.

Mar 8 UN troops gained on the West-Central front in Korea while "Reds" gained in the East. Premier Ali Razmara of Iran was assassinated. The Senate voted a limit of 4000,000 men in the armed forces 49-41. The 'Big 4' wrangled about the Austrian and Trieste situation. Heavyweight 'champ' Ezzard Charles retained his title in a 15 round bout with Joe Walcott. It was a close fight. A Federal Jury brought in a verdict of guilty with mandatory death sentence for Oscar Colazzo [sic] who stormed Blair House and attempted to assassinate Truman. Lillian read "The Evening and the Morning" - Virginia Sorenson, "Two Worlds and their Ways" - I. Compton-Burnett, "The Sheltering Sky" - Paul Bowles, "China Shakes the World" Jack Belden. Lil got bed spreads for the kids' beds from Sam $4 apiece.

Mar 9 11,400 casualties were claimed on Communist troops on the Korean battlefield yesterday. The Senate voted to send troops abroad but with Congressional approval needed. The "Lonely Hearts" killers, Ray Fernandez and Martha Beck who killed lonely widows for their money went to their death in the electric chair in Sing Sing. Two youthful killers preceded them in the chair. The UnAmerican Comm. started new hearings with V.J. Jerome refusing to answer questions on constitutional grounds. Julius and Ethel Rosenberg and Morton Sobell went on trial for their lives in the country's first atom bomb spy trial. Max Elitcher, former Communist testified the defendant had asked him for gov't secrets to transmit to Russia while they were employed in Washington.

Mar 10 Sylvia drew "The Blue Fairy Book" - Andrew Lang, "Primrose Day" - Carolyn Haywood, "Azor and the Haddock" - Maude Crowley, "The House in the Woods" and other Grimm Fairy tales. Eugene drew "Ki-Yu" R. L. Haig-Brown, "Chee and his Pony" - Florence Hayes, "The Great Houdini" Williams and Epstein and "The Dodgers" John Durant. In the morning Lil and Eugene were examined by eye-doctor Fishman. Eugene got drops. They must return next week.

2/25-3/3/51

Feb 25 Sunday Lil took the kids to the Botanical Gardens to see the beautiful tulip exposition. I had to work today.

Feb 26 Lillian has a cold and spent a good part of the day in bed. She had under 100° temperature. .... Only mud stopped the UN's advances in Korea. Former Foreign Minister Clementis was denounced as a traitor in Czecho. by Gottwald. Russia announced its willingness to negotiate with the West. Talbert won the Nat'l Indoor Singles from Straight Clark in five sets. Nancy Chaffee repeated her last year's win in the Women's, defeating Beverly Baker 6-4, 6-4.

Feb 27 Lil felt better today. The Supreme Court limited the right of witnesses to plead self-incrimination in questions of C.P. activities by 5-3. The minority of Douglas, Frankfurter and Black bitterly assailed the majority opinion. A boycott of meat by housewives has sent the price down somewhat.

Feb 28 Stayed home from work as Lil had 101° this morning. Dr Satozky came as Dr Holzman was on vacation. The doctor found Lil had bronchitis in a mild form. He prescribed a cough mixture, the vaporizer and plenty of fluids. The North Korean line cracked. Argentina's La Prensa, critical of the gov't has been closed for a month due to a strike by pro-gov't news vendors and printers. Loyal workers, attempting to return to work had one killed and 15 injured in battles with thugs. Two more basketball players - Ex L.I.U. Nate Miller and the fourth member of City's present team Floyd Lane have confessed to taking bribes for 'dumping'. City College followed L.I.U.'s lead in dropping basketball for the remainder of the season.

Mar 1 Stayed home from work again. Lil's temp. was 100.5° most of yesterday except for an unexplained 102.5 once at 9 o'clock. This morning it was 99.8 and she is out of bed part of the time. The 22ND Amendment to the Constitution became law. This limits the President to two terms but excepts Truman. Senate crime investigation declared nation wide crime gangs protected by city state and national officials are a menace to the United States. Luciano deported to Italy was called czar of the American underworld. Costello and Adonis were named leaders of the Eastern Axis and Accardo, Fischetti brothers and Guzik head of the Mid-West axis. US tanks smashed six miles through broken No. Korean defences. The French Cabinet fell over the issue of changes in the electoral law to limit Communist strength in the gov't. This dispute is about how to change the laws. Russia cut prices on many items 10 to 20%. Bolting Italian Communists formed and [sic] independent Socialist party. Labor made a complete break with the mobilization set-up over wage ceilings. Basketball 'fixer' Sollazzo was indicted for false income tax returns. Eugene brought home a form to be signed for his entrance into Jr. High School. He was one of seven children in his class who had qualified. At night at his Boy Scout meeting, he passed the 'tenderfoot test'. 

Mar 2 Lil had some temperature in the morning which came down later. She didn't feel too well but was out of bed mostly. The Brown Isaacs Anti-Discrimination Bill passed the Board of Estimate. The bill is aimed at Stuyvesant Town. Railroad workers won a 12 1/2 hourly raise. Emspak was sentenced to six months in jail and $500 fine for contempt of Congress. The wage freeze was slightly thawed after labor's walkout from the mobilization set-up.  

Mar 3 Played Sylvia checkers and Eugene chess. Lil is out of bed but still tired. Prices have risen 1.5 per cent for a new record. The 'Red Registry' law was killed by a high court in Los Angeles. Former L.I.U. star Lou Lipman joined the parade of arrested basketball players for 'fixing' games. A dock workers union was bombed in Jersey City causing several casualties.
