8/30-9/5/53

Aug 30 Sunday The parakeet chirped this morning. At noon Sam Mencher met us here and we taxied to Woodlawn where I lost to him in 95.8° heat. I also played some with Eugene. Lil Harry and the kids dropped over too as they were in the Bronx. We couldn't make Richie's birthday party near the Golfhouse as it was too hot. Sam came home with us where we found Sylvia temp. 103°. Bishop Haas is dead at 64.

Aug 31 Temp 97°. Dr. Holzman came this morning as Sylvia's temp was 101°. He diagnosed a virus of the throat; gave her a shot of penicillin prescribed aureomycin, gargling with Lavoris liquid diet ... The parakeet takes food now of its own volition.

Sept 1 Sylvia's temp remained at 102° yesterday but came down to 99.8° this morning. Dr Holzman ordered the same treatment today. The temp reached 97° yesterday.

Sept 2 Sylvia was perfectly well but still did not get dressed. The temp. hit 93° to end a five day streak of 95° temps which set a record.

Sept 3 The temp hit 99° yesterday, a record for the summer and the date. General Wainwright is dead at 70 and Jacques Thibaud was killed at 73 in a plane crash with all other occupants. We both read Alfred Karin's "A Walker in the City". Lillian read Irwin Shaw's short stories, "Mixed Company".

Sept 4 The temp hit 91.6°. East German Communists entered the West zone to disrupt elections there. Gen. Dean was released by the "Reds" in Korea after a three year captivity. Lil and Madeline went to Joyland on Upper Broadway as they had some half price tickets. The kids enjoyed themselves. In the morning I took Norma and the kids to the library where Sylvia drew "Ginnie Joins In" C. Wooley, "Family Grandstand" C.R. Brink, "Sand in her Shoes" M. Lawrence (again) and "A Little Princess" F.H. Burnett. Eugene "The Great Baseball Managers" C.B. Cleveland, "The N.Y. Giants" F. Graham, "State Champs" L.E. Burgoyne, "The Angry Planet" JK Cross, "When the Stars Come Out" R. H. Baker.

Sept 5 The temp hit 87° breaking a string of successive 90° temperatures at 10. Silvia and Norma went to the Fordham to see "Second Chance" and "Sea Devils". We watched the Forest Hills matches on television. Jack Pfiester is dead at 75, Richard Enright at 82 and Buck Herzog at 68.
