Two more Labor ministers resigned in England in protest against re-armament at the expense of the medical plan. G.I's fell back 20 miles. Morris Carnovsky and George Willner refused to speak to the "Red" Committee. Marc Lawrence however admitted he was a former Communist and named other "comrades" including Lionel Stander. Two more "confessions" were under attack in the "Trenton Six" trial.

Apr 26 Chinese Communists captured Murasan [?] on the way to Seoul. American sources continue to claim tremendous enemy casualties. 200 Spaniards were arrested as leaders of the strike against the H.C.L. 4/15-4/21/51

April 15 Sunday Mom and Pop came home from Florida yesterday and had dinner here today with Lil Harry and the kids. Mom sprained her back in a fall there. She saw the doctor today who told her to sleep on a board. Peggy "played the piano" and danced. The kids played some pieces and a duet. We watched the Dodgers beat the Yanks and sensational Mickey Mantle hit three singles and a homer.

Apr. 16 Eugene got his report card which showed an improvement in Arith (94) and all 90 or over. Sen. Cain asked open war on Korea's neighbors.

Apr 17 Sylvia's report card was the usual all 'S' card. MacArthur is being paraded and feted in Honolulu. Senate Republicans asked a probe of our foreign policy. North Korea cabled the U.N. proposing a peace parley.

Apr. 18 In a bitter Senate debate each party called the other the war party. Gen. Bradley came out against a preventive war and attacked MacArthur's policies. Screen star Ann Revere and writers Harold Buchman and Sam Moore refused to talk to the "UnAmerican" Comm.

Apr 19 30000 people lined San Fran. streets to welcome MacArthur as he arrived in the city. He announced he would not enter politics. Sen. Vandenberg is dead at 67.

Apr 20 MacArthur addressed Congress, claiming the Pentagon shared his views. He reviewed the entire Far East picture bringing tears to many eyes. Several million turned out in the City to welcome MacArthur home in the biggest demonstration in our history. MacArthur in his Washington speech again asked for an economic and naval blockade of China, bombing of Manchuria and China's coast and use of Formosan troops.

4/8-4/14/51

Apr. 8 Sunday We went to the Oxford today to see "The Mudlark" with Alec Guiness [sic] and Irene Dunne. A little street Arab brings Queen Victoria (Irene Dunne) out of her seclusion. Guiness is Disraeli. Also "The Man who Cheated himself" with Lee Cobb and Jane Wyatt. At home we had tongue and trimmings in front of the television set. MacArthur's call for the use of Chiang's troops has again loosed a storm of protest especially in England. The Cal. U. loyalty oath was declared invalid and professors who had been discharged for refusing to sign it were order re-hired. Truman picked a new Mobilization Board and labor returned to it with Green, Murray, Reuther and Meany accepting posts.

Apr. 9 I had a bad night with a stuffed nose. When I came home at 2 o'clock, exhausted I stayed home from work. "Red" Counter attacks forced Allied units back in one front. Israel Syria hostilities have broken out in the de-militarized area. France banned the Partisans of Peace. The state opened a probe of youth dope addiction.

Apr 10 We called Dr. Holzman today as my temperature remained. He said I had a general virus in my throat, nose and stomach. He gave me a shot of penicillin. He prescribed neo-synephrin, gargling with Dobell's solution ..., terramycin (10 tablets for $5.) a light liquid diet, a little white cereal, tea, skimmed milk, toast and a shot of whiskey at night. My temp was 101.5 when he took it. The Chinese opened dam gates but it failed to halt the Allies. The Supreme Court stayed the execution of two Negros on the basis of discrimination in the jury selection and a terrorist atmosphere in the town.

April 11 I felt better this morning as my stomach finally lost its soreness and my nose cleared up. My temp went down to 99°. In a sensational move, Truman fired Gen MacArthur from all his leading positions in the Far East, including direction of the Korean war. Gen M.B. Ridgway was named to succeed him. The House voted to scrap the Admin. U.M.T. and set up a commission to draft a U.M.T. plan. Movie star Sterling Hayden told the House UnAmerican Comm. that he ignorantly joined the C.P. in 1940 and quit it six months later in disgust. He named other Hollywood figures including Karen Morley who were members. At the "Trenton Six" trial, defendant Collis English, his sister Mrs. Berson Mitchell and his mother all collapsed within minutes of each other. The voluntariness of the original confessions was again attacked by Arthur Garfield Hays.

April 12 My highest temp. yesterday was 99.8°. This morning I had coffee with my breakfast in the kitchen. Truman in a nationwide broadcast said he fired MacArthur to balk a world war. Some Republican congressmen talked of impeachment of the President. Actor Will Geer and writer Robert Lees refused to answer questions in the latest Hollywood "Red" probe. The City Council voted the 3% Sales Tax 19-6 in spite of the storm of protest its suggestion had produced. 5 ex-firemen were held in a $500,000 extortion shakedown. The A.P. named an All time All American Football team End - Hutson and Oosterbaan, Tackles - Nagurski and Henry, Guards Heffelfinger and Suffridge, Center - Schultz QB - Eckersall H.B. Grange and Nevers F.B. Jim Thorpe. The Drama Circle Critics Awards were given to "Darkness at Noon" Sidney Kingsley 's adaptation of Arthur Koestler's Anti-Communist Novel and "Guys and Dolls" in the musical field. Sam Rosoff is dead.

April 13 I was out of bed most of yesterday. My temp. was normal. Sylvia's class went to the public library where they heard a story read to them. It was a long poem "If I was in charge of the Zoo". Sylvia has two gold stars for submitting excellent reports. She is the only one. Sen. Taft. asked for war on China to avert a third world war! Richard J. Collins named twenty as "Reds" at the Hollywood probe. Those included were Buddy Schulberg, Ring Lardner Jr., JH Lawson, Cole, Ornitz, Maltz, R Rossen, Tuttle, Gordon Kahn, Bescovics [?], Abe Polonski [sic], Jarrico, Waldo Salt & wife. Dic [sic] Feurtado, former L.I.U. player was the latest to be picked up for fixing games. Played a chess game with Eugene.

The additional spacing between lines is apparently due to the extra size exclamation point I used, trying to image Dad's large exclamation point. I didn't like the spacing, but even when I removed it, the spacing remained, so I stayed true to Dad's large exclamation point.

April 14 The kids went with Betty Ann, Cookie, Kathy & Derry to the Kingsbridge to see Dean Martin & Jerry Lewis in "At war with the Army". Also "High Lonesome". MacArthur's opponents and partisans are battling over the historic "dismissal". Many "rightists" are planning to make a national hero out of him on his return. Victor Killian, Fred Grafe Waldo Salt and Paul Jarrico stood their ground in the Hollywood "red" probe. The Judge in the "Trenton Six" trial threw out the confessions of three of the defendants as not voluntary. Bevin is dead at 71.
