1/27-2/2/52

Jan 27 Sunday Martial law was declared in Egypt as rioters fired and pillaged in Cairo.

Jan 28  In Egypt Farouk 'fired' his cabinet and named an 'independent' with dictatorial powers. Fanny Ward is dead at 79.

Jan 29 Burmese troops are battling Chiang invasion troops. Judy Coplon was awarded a new trial by the Supreme Court. Ken McGregor won the Australian singles in a stunning upset over Frank Sedgman 7-5, 12-10, 2-6, 6-2. He eliminated last year's winner, Dick Savitt, in the semis. Owen Johnson is dead at 75.

Jan 30 Eugene will take typing instead of wood-work. An L.A. hospital fired three specialists on political grounds evoking a storm of protest.

I don't think I wanted to take typing, but it certainly was very useful learning to touch type.

Jan 31 A tribunal comprised of a manufacturer, public member and union leader handed hosiery workers a 25% pay cut "to keep the industry going". Union leader Leader dissented.

I did verify that the union leader's name was "Leader". I suspect Dad wrote it that way deliberately.

Feb 1 Sup't of Schools Jansen suspended eight more school teachers who had refused to say whether they were Communists. The FBI is probing the nazi youth gangs of Philadelphia. West Germany raided Nazi and Communist homes and offices. Truman called Sen. McCarthy a liar. Steve Nelson was found guilty on 11 counts of sedition. Eugene drew "Do You Know Your Baseball" - Bill Brandt, "Player-Manager" Lou Boudreau with Ed Fitzgerald, "The Voyage of the Luna 1" - D. Craigie and "Glenn Curtis" - Alden Hatch. The $114,000 Park Ave jewel robbery was solved in two days with the arrest of three young thugs. Bakers went out on strike closing many bakeries in the metropolitan area. The Soviet "package" deal calling for the admission of 14 countries into the UN was defeated 22-21. Newbold Morris chosen to clean up the Federal gov't will start with the Justice Dep't.
We went to the library and I took out four book Young man of the house is a very good book. I like Little house in the big woods too. We stopped at Krums and bought some nuts and carmel covered apples.

This last, scanned in below (in two parts, as it covered a page break), was (obviously) written by Silvia.

1/20-1/26/52

Jan 20 Sunday We went to Radio City Music Hall ($1.50 cost) to celebrate Eugene's birthday. We got down at 11:15 A.M. and found a three block line but got in soon enough. The stage show was a beautiful spectacle with three different sections of the stage able to be raised and lowered. The picture was "The Greatest Show on Earth" - all about the circus with Bill Holden, Cornell Wilde, Charlton Heston, Dotty Lamour, Jimmy Stewart and Gloria Grahame.

Interestingly, IMDB does not show William Holden in the movie.

Jan 21 New French Premier Faure formed the 17th post war Cabinet. The Metropolitan evictions were cancelled and Negro tenants Mr & Mrs Hendrix were accepted. City Council President Halley aided in the settlement. A US nun was slain in Egypt. Tommy Ryan, manager of Rocky Castellani, was barred fot life and fined $3000. for his attack on referee Ray Miller after the latter stopped the a fight between Castellani and Rocky Durando, awarding the latter the fight on a TKO.

Another interesting thing; Castellani was called "Rocky", but Durando's name was "Ernie", but was nicknamed "The Rock".

Former Sec'y of War Patterson was among 31 killed in another Elizabeth air liner crash. A number of Elizabethans were killed or injured as the plane crashed into several homes. Carol King is dead at 56.

Jan 24 Played first chess game in a long time and Eugene gave me a tough tussle. Marian Anderson sang at a mixed audience in Jacksonville. Riots are continuing in Tunis following the deportation of Nationalist and Communist leaders.

Alger Hiss asked for a new trial on the basis of new evidence. The TV Union asked an end to the blacklist.
