1/20-1/26/52

Jan 20 Sunday We went to Radio City Music Hall ($1.50 cost) to celebrate Eugene's birthday. We got down at 11:15 A.M. and found a three block line but got in soon enough. The stage show was a beautiful spectacle with three different sections of the stage able to be raised and lowered. The picture was "The Greatest Show on Earth" - all about the circus with Bill Holden, Cornell Wilde, Charlton Heston, Dotty Lamour, Jimmy Stewart and Gloria Grahame.

Interestingly, IMDB does not show William Holden in the movie.

Jan 21 New French Premier Faure formed the 17th post war Cabinet. The Metropolitan evictions were cancelled and Negro tenants Mr & Mrs Hendrix were accepted. City Council President Halley aided in the settlement. A US nun was slain in Egypt. Tommy Ryan, manager of Rocky Castellani, was barred fot life and fined $3000. for his attack on referee Ray Miller after the latter stopped the a fight between Castellani and Rocky Durando, awarding the latter the fight on a TKO.

Another interesting thing; Castellani was called "Rocky", but Durando's name was "Ernie", but was nicknamed "The Rock".

Jan 22 Truman asked for the greatest peace time budget in our history - 85 billiions, most of it for arms.

Jan 23 An inquiry board recommended acceptance of the longshoremen contract although it had been fraudulently drawn up and ratified. Sampson was named as chief graft dispenser at Moran's trial. Former Sec'y of War Patterson was among 31 killed in another Elizabeth air liner crash. A number of Elizabethans were killed or injured as the plane crashed into several homes. Carol King is dead at 56.

Jan 24 Played first chess game in a long time and Eugene gave me a tough tussle. Marian Anderson sang at a mixed audience in Jacksonville. Riots are continuing in Tunis following the deportation of Nationalist and Communist leaders.

Jan 25 Lil went downtown to the Margaret Sanger Institute, Macy's where she looked at sofa beds and bought handkerchiefs, The Trading Post where she bought a Boy Scout shirt and pants for Eugene and Bloomingdale's. Alger Hiss asked for a new trial on the basis of new evidence. The TV Union asked an end to the blacklist.

Jan 26 British troops slaughtered 50 Egyptian police in an assault on the barracks in Ismailia precipitating chaos in Egypt. Russia won its first victory in the Political and Security Comm. when its resolution to admit 14 states to the UN membership received a majority vote. At night we went to a gathering at Tante Blume's. We brought a candy dish. We had delicatessen beer etc. Present also were mom and pop, the Thaws, Beckers, Bardes, Gooses, Guzmans, Edeen and Sandra. Barbara gave her ventriloquism show as usual.
