10/1-10/7/50

Oct 1 Sunday The Phillies clinched the N.L. pennant on the last day of the season by defeating the Dodgers in a stirring 10 inning game 4-1. Roberts defeated Newcombe. We watched on television as Dick Sisler hit a tenth inning homer - his fourth hit, to win the game. The Phillies had had a 7 1/2 game lead on Sept 18! We went out to Krum's after the game and had sundaes. Then the kids went to a Simchas Torah party at the Shul. In the morning they went to Sunday school.

I remember watching that game, but, strangely enough, I would have said I watched it alone.

Oct 2 So Koreans plunged across the 38th parallel on order of U.S. Commander Walker. MacArthur asked unconditional surrender. India showed concern over the crossing at the U.N. Red China termed U.S. the #1 enemy. Gov Dewey, Att'y Gen'l Goldstein, Sen Lehman & Rep Lynch Dem candidate for Gov. appeared with the Anti-Semite Gen. Anders at the Pulaski Day parade. Corsi & Pecora canddates for Mayor had withdrawn.

Oct 3 South Koreans sped 35 miles beyond the parallel. Russia presented a peace plan for Korea. Cease fire, withdrawal of foreign troops, nationwide elections supervised by No. & So. Korea and observed by a UN Commission. An undercover C.P. member working for the police identified teacher Friedman as a member. 1400 Communists were arrested in West Germany riots and disturbances.

Oct 4 Lil made Sylvia a nice dress. Molly and Sam gave her a doll for her birthday. U.S. plane blasted 85 vehicles reportedly moving from Manchuria. India asked for a compromise between the American and Soviet peace plans for Korea.

Oct 5 Yanks win 1st. Raschi shutout Phillies with 2 hits 1-0. The UN OK'd MacArthur's invasion of North Korea 47-5. A move for a compromise was defeated 32-24.

This was the first year that I was disappointed that I was in school and couldn't watch the World Series.

Oct 6 Yanks win 2ND. Reynolds won on DiMaggio's homer in the tenth 2-1. No. Koreans resistance stiffened against SoKoreans 50 miles from Wonsan. The Soviet bloc warned NoKorea will defy U.N. peace resolutions and continue fighting. At the teacher trial, examiner Kiendl refused to let Prof Emerson and five other profs testify on academic freedom.

Oct 7 Yanks win 3rd. Lopat went eight innings but Ferrick got credit for the win 3-2. Mom and Pop came over bringing a dress for Sylvia. They took us for a ride. Mollie who was here also came along. We rode on Bronx River P'kway. Then we stopped at a food and Amusement center in Yonkers. The kids had rides on motorboat and carousel. We had hot dogs, french fried and drinks. Eugene and I played a baseball game on a machine. It was Mom and Pop's treat for Sylvia. At home Eugene and I played a chess game.
I am president of my class in school. Being president you lead the line and you watch the children when the teacher is out of the room. And you do other things too.

I remember that I was looking forward that weekend to watching the World Series, but the family had other ideas. I'm sure the "food and Amusement center" was Adventurers, which we frequented later, but I guess this was the first time. See scanned in page for Silvia's actual writing.

9/24-9/30/50

Sept 24 Sunday For the second consecutive Sunday morning I went over to P.S. 86 schoolyard with Eugene where we had a workout, having a catch, playing handball and the game I invented - 'killer'. Many high cops are being called in the big graft investigation. Joe Louis failed in a comeback attempt, losing a 15 round bout to Ezzard Charles decisively. Louis had retired undefeated.

Sept 29 Sylvia stuck up for me as being handsomer than a certain television entertainer. Eugene started to write baseball statistics. North Koreans fled in rout as Americans neared the controversial 38th parallel. Washington listed peace terms for Korea. They included a free united Korea, a Korean UN Commission, relief & reconstruction program,

He clearly intended to add something after that last comma, but,

Sept 30 Red China won its first invitation to a UN hearing - charges of U.S. aggression against Formosa. Allies are poised at the 38th parallel awaiting orders. Police Commissioner Murphy placed all 336 plainclothesmen back into uniform. Lester Patterson, who said he left the C.P. in 1937 identified teacher David Friedman as being present at two C.P. meetings. The Yanks clinched the A.L. pennant. Indonesia was admitted as the 60th member of the UN. Won a chess game from Eugene.
