7/15-7/21/51

July 15 Sunday Mom and pop took us over to Ten Mile River where we saw Eugene. We were delighted to find he was willing to stay the whole month. We had come prepared to take him home. His trouble had apparently been homesickness. He has lost a little weight. Eugene sleeps in an upper berth in a semi-open air cabin. The parents watched the scouts have their lunch and sing songs. Eugene was very pathetic as we left as is very lonesome for us and want us to stay longer. We decided to stop off at Lesser Lodge at White Sulphur Springs and see Lil Harry and the kids which we did. We started out 8 in the morning and made fine time all day except about 15 miles before the Bridge on the way home. There we ran into a traffic jam which delayed us so we got home at 10:45PM. Sylvia fell asleep in the car about 9:30. Arnold Schoenberg is dead.

This was the official "Visiting Day" at the camp.

July 16 The Socialist Parties met and re-constituted the 2ND International. UN and "Red" mediators resumed negotiations for a truce in Kaesong after the "Reds" accepted all U.N. conditions which were unrestricted use of roads leading to the site, no armed personnel in the neutral area, unarmed security guards. Ten were killed and scores injured in a demonstration protesting Harriman's arrival in Iran. The nation's costliest flood in Kansas City saw 17 dead and hundreds of thousands marooned. A tremendous oil fire has added to the disaster.

July 17 Lil Sarah Madeline and Kay went to visit Sarah R in her new house this afternoon. Teheran is under martial law. Another parley was held in Korea in a friendly atmosphere. The indicted Communists bail was canceled again. Several cash bail offers were rejected.

July 18 A Korean agreement is said to hinge on withdrawal of foreign troops.

July 19 We have made a deal with Franco for Air and Naval bases. The "House" banned all controls unless profits are assured. Jersey Joe Walcott at least 37 years old and father of six won the Heavyweight title by K.O. over Champion Ezzard Charles in the 7th round. It was his fifth try at the title.

July 20 Split with Warner. The House voted a 4 month freeze on wages and prices at the July 7 level.

July 21 We went out to Echo Lake picnic grounds with Flo and Charlie Solomon in their car. We ate our lunch on a picnic table then spent a few hours in the cool surroundings. We then had supper in a chinese restaurant on Featherbed Lane. Sylvia chose an American meal. King Abdullah of Jordan was assassinated. Talks in Korea were postponed to Wednesday.

Again, I can't get rid of the extra space at the end of this post.

7/8-7/14/51

July 8 Sunday Beat Buhr at Woodlawn. We spent most of the day there with the Buhrs and Zitos. The kids had a lot of fun with a large beach ball. We all went to the spring which was still flowing, but slowly. We went by the cab and returned home in Stan Hotez' car.

July 9 Beat Hotez. We got two more cards from Eugene saying he hates camp and could we please come up as soon as humanly possible and take him home. Sylvia went to summer school today. The first truce talk at Kaesong was called a 100% success.

July 10 Sylvia goes to summer school from about 9:30 to 12N and 1 to 5 P.M. She won in table hockey. Iran turned down Truman's appeal to settle the oil dispute and withdraw from the World Court. Dashiell Hammett and W.A. Hunton received six month sentences for refusing to name bail fund contributors. Harry Heilmann is dead at 56. New police Commissioner Monaghan took office.

July 11 Beat Auerbach. The North Korean truce delegation proposed a 12 1/2 mile buffer zone at the 38th parallel and an immediate cease-fire. Also a continued divided North Korea. The gov't asked for an increase in the bail of the 15 arrested Communists to $876,000. Randy Turpin 23 years old British Negro scored an amazing upset over Ray Robinson in 15 round to win his Middleweight title. It was Robinson's second loss in 11 years. Robinson is on a European tour. The N.L. beat the A.L. 8-3. Kiner, Elliott, Musial and Hodges homered for the N.L.Wertz & Kell for the A.L. Roberts, Maglie, Newcombe and Blackwell pitched for the N.L. Garver, Lopat, Hutchinson, Parnell and Lemon for the A.L. Lil had her cauterization done at Dr Rosenfeld's.

July 12 We got better news from Eugene. He likes camp a little better but still wants to go home after the first period. The 15 "Reds" had their bail revoked and were sent to jail in a move to increase their bail and ban the C.R.C. bail fund. Truce talks were broken off as the "Reds" barred Allied newsmen at Kaesong. Lillian read "Tomorrow Will be Better" - Betty Smith.

July 13 Beat Hotez. The Board of Ed. deferred action on a resolution by Board member Timone to bar the use of school buildings by "Leftists" Speakers for both sides were heard. Police stood by as a mob wrecked the home of a Negro moving into a white neighborhood in Chicago. Gen Ridgway demanded that all armed personnel withdraw from Kaesong. Judge Learned Hand restored bail for the '15' rebuking Judges Saypol and Ryan for the revocation.

July 14 Sylvia drew "Peter and Penny" C. Haywood, "Deborah's White Winter: - E.F. Lattimore, "Eddie and the Fire Engine" - C. Haywood and "Henry Huggins" Beverly Cleary. The US is seeking a buffer zone North of the 38th parallel. National Guardsmen set up barricades in Cicero to prevent any more mob attacks on the apartment house in which a Negro had moved. 17 have been hospitalized in riots of several thousand whites against the encroachment of "white" territory.

Dad pasted in this box score here without comment, but the reason was clear.

7/1-7/7/51

July 1 Sunday Eugene and I went to the Yankee Stadium in reserved seats to see the Yanks beat the Red Sox 5-2. Ed Lopat pitched a 6-hitter. Mel Parnell was knocked out. Coleman and Pesky homered. We had ice cream, peanuts, hot dogs and soda and balloons for both kids. Lillian and Sylvia went to the Kingsbridge to see Spencer Tracy- Joan Bennett and Elizabeth Taylor in "Fathers Little Dividend". It waa delightful. Also "Double Crossbones". Afterwards I took the kids to St. James where I played some tennis with Eugene on the asphalt until the attendant came around. Lillian read "Meg" - Theodora Keogh, "Eagle At My Eyes" - Katkov, "The Sisters" Ann Meredith and "Too Little Love" - R Henrique.

I remember this (my first baseball game) well, but I thought I remembered my grandfather taking us; I think that perhaps he was just responsible for the reserved seats, and apparently was not there. We sat near the front in, I believe, the "mezzanine". Perhaps the most memorable thing about my first baseball game was that Bob Feller pitched his third no-hitter that day; of course, he did that in Cleveland, while we were in NY. When a game was complete, the out-of-town scoreboard showed three columns (Runs, Hits, Errors), and a murmur ran through the stadium when the zero in the Hits column showed up; I remember someone nearby pointing it out. Dad pasted in that score in the next day's entry below.

July 2 China and No Korea agreed to discuss a cease-fire in Korea. Sylvia drew "Betsy and Billy" C Haywood, "Two and Two Make [Are] Four" - C Haywood, "A Chicken for Christmas" Jo Hatcher, "Carol from the Country" F Friedman. Eugene took nothing as he goes to camp Wednesday.
Feller became the first pitcher of this century to pitch three no hitters.

July 3 Dr Holzman's nurse called up this morning with the great news that Lil's laboratory report was negative. As Eugene is going away we we [sic] went to Mother's for lunch stopping off at Molly's first. A. P. Correspondent William Oatis confessed to a Czech court that he spied for the "West". The Allies agreed to 'Red' proposals that cease-fire talks open on July 10 at Kaesong. Fighting continued on a reduced scale. 7 of the '11' convicted C.P. leaders surrendered to begin their jail terms. Winston, Hall, Thompson and Green failed to appear.

July 4 Lillian took Eugene to 167 st to catch an 8:15 AM bus with the rest of the Bronx Boy Scouts. Eugene's knapsack was quite heavy so they taxied over. Later we met Sam & Molly Shirley & Seth at Woodlawn where I beat Berman. Rain interrupted us at 2 o'clock so we all went to our house and finished the picnic. We saw the Dodgers take a double header from the Giants. Seth amused himself by playing the piano. Four ex firemen were convicted for extortion. $80,000 bail was forfeited on the four missing C.P. leaders. Hugh Casey committed suicide at 38. I am sorry Eugene went away because I will miss him. When we were at woodlawn a dog chased me because I had a lollipop. I also entered a Western contest and hope I win. I drew a cowgirl.

This last was written by Silvia, of course, and scanned in below.

July 5 Betty Ann, Norma, Arline came up to play with Sylvia. They played with the dolls' house which has been gathering dust for years. A.P. correspondent Oatis got 10 years for spying. Lillian read "The Promising Young Men" - G. Sklar.

July 6 We were very much shocked to receive a card from Eugene saying we should come and take him home soon as he didn't like it at all. The Communists pledged the truce envoy's safety for Sunday's preliminary meeting. F.V. Field, Bail Fund Sec'y of the C.R.C. was given 90 days jail in a contempt action for refusing to name contributors. Beat F. Katz.

July 7 Lost to Mencher. The fifth day of the bread strike saw violence grow and the supply of bread diminish. Dick Savitt amazed again by adding the Wimbledon title to his Australian win. He beat Ken McGregor in the final 6-4, 6-4, 6-4. D. Hart beat S. Fry 6-0, 6-1.

6/24-6/30/51

June 24 Sunday We went on a surprise trip to Hyde Park to see F.D.R.'s library and home. Pop and Harry took their cars. Harry's nephew and niece Sammy and Taubie also went with us. We ate at Howard Johnsons then visited the famous museum. The library is especially impressive holding mementos of FDR's entire life and hundreds of the wonderful gifts he got.

Since Taubie (Thelma) was Harry's sister, not his niece, Dad apparently made a mistake; perhaps it was Taubie's daughter who was with us.

June 25 Communists hurled Allied forces from two key hills. Lie urged action on Malik's call for negotiation for a cease-fire at the earliest date.

June 26 I went to see Dr Fishman about my eyes. I did not need new lenses. The doctor cleaned the pus from my left eye as my lid had become inflamed. He also gave me salt tablets for bathing the eye. Sylvia told us her teacher said she was like Maxwell House Coffee "Good to ........ The Chinese Communists endorsed Malik's truce offer. Supreme Court Justice H.C. Greenberg of N.Y. ordered the I.W.O. dissolved as "Communist dominated". The order allows for a 'stay' for appeal.

June 27 The UN started secret peace talks. UN troops were stalled for the second day by stubborn resistance. Acheson called a truce at the 38th parallel a UN. victory. Robert Rossen declared he was not a C.P. member or sympathizer to its aims now. He refused to answer questions about his past. J Edward Bromberg refused to answer any questions. Two defense workers refused to talk to a separate committee investigating communism in industry. Warfield was apparently actually 84.

June 29 Archbishop Groesz of Hungary received 15 years in prison for plotting to overthrow the gov't. Six other defendants were also sentenced, one to death. Lillian and Eugene went over to Creston Jr High at Creston and 181st where Eugene will enter in September. He will be in 7.S.P.2. Teacher - Mr. Silverstein. Several teachers spoke emphasizing scholarship, service and non-competitiveness.

I remember Mr. Silverstein only as the gym teacher who taught me how to properly attempt a layup, using the backboard.

June 30 Fighting slowed in Korea as everyone awaited a truce. We went to Fordham having ice cream sodas. I bought a pair of slacks in Adams - sale priced at $5.

6/17-6/23/51

June 17 Fathers Day Sunday I got a shirt and pyjamas from the family. We went over to Mom and Pop for lunch and gave Pop liquor and ties. Lil & Harry were away for the week-end. Peggy slept at Mom's. She is worried that Susan, who is at Taubee's might cry. Eugene took two games from Pop after I went to work. In the morning I had gone to the school yard with the kids to play ball. Had a catch with Eugene and ran into a stone wall. Sylvia bounced her ball against the ball wall clapping hands before she catches it. She did this all the time we were there, paying no attention to us.

June 18 60000 N.M.U. members struck for a satisfactory contract and stopped all tourist ships. Chinese stopped their retreat and moved back into the "iron triangle" area. Secy Gen'l Lie proposed an offer of a truce to China with an all out offensive if she refuses it. A wild street fight took place in West Germany between 200 police and 2000 communist youth protesting re-militarization. Lil Altschuler called up that Thelma finally gave birth to a girl on Saturday. Thelma had to have transfusions afterward.

June 19 U.S. jets outfought "Red" Migs for the second consecutive day. French elections showed the C.P. tally the most votes again 22% to De Gaulle's 18% but the country moved toward the "right" as the the new election laws deprived the Communists of many seats.

June 20 Beat Mac Cohn in my first tennis of the season. Iran-British oil talks were broken off as Iran rejected a British offer of a financial advance instead of the profits of the Anglo-Iranian Oil Co.

June 21 Iran took over the Anglo Iranian Oil Co as Britain recalled its mission. F.B.I. agents in a series of early morning raids rounded up 17 Communist officials on the charge of conspiring to "teach and advocate the necessity of overthrowing the gov't by force and violence". This followed the Supreme Court decision upholding the conviction of the top "11". Those arrested are Marion Bachrach, E.G. Flynn, Betty Gannett, Claudia Jones, I. Amter, I. Begun, Bittelman, G Blake Charney, S. Gerson, A.J. [sic] Jerome, Arnold Johnson, Al Lannon, J Mindel, Pettis Perry, Trachtenberg, L. Weinstock, W. Weinstone. McCarthy's latest sensation is that Gen. Marshall and Acheson were Communist tools who were turning the country over to Soviet Russia. Gen. Ridgway asked the UN countries for more troops for Korea. Big Four talks on a proposed conference were broken off after 16 weeks.

June 23 Frieda K. came over for a visit for the first time in several years. We had meat balls and spaghetti for supper and played anagrams with the kids. Mindszenty's successor, Hungarian Archbishop Groesz confessed he worked with other defendants to overthrow the government by armed revolt. The "House" approved the biggest tax bill in our history, $7,200,000,000 by a vote of 233-160. Reshevsky won the Wertheim Memorial Chess tournament here last week. Najdorf, Evans and Fine were also-rans. Fine, out of practice, was fourth.

June 12 Communist artillery halted the Allies in Korea. Gen'l Wedemeyer testifying in MacArthur inquiry called for our withdrawal from Korea and a diplomatic break with Russia even at a risk of war. 65000 ILGWU workers struck in the first big walkout in 25 years. Police Commissioner Murphy was named to a lifetime Federal court post succeeding Judge Medina was succeeded retiring Judge Learned Hand on the Second Circuit Court of Appeals.

"was succeeded" should have been "who was succeeding".

June 13 The state inquiry into the "dope" scandal opened at 8 [?] Center [sic] St. with a tape recorded story of a 16 year old Bronx girl who had gone from drugs to crime and prostitution. School Super. Jansen admitted there might be 1500 "dope" users in the schools and 5000 addicts in and out of schools. The Christian Democrat coalition barely defeated the C.P.- Left S.P. bloc in Italian elections - second round. Gen'l Wedemeyer urged a ring of air bases around Russia.

June 14 Allied tanks entered Pyongyang. Two undercover agents from the Attorney Gen'l's office told lurid stories of teenagers bold traffic in dope and book-making in around [sic] the city Public Schools. The jury at the "Trenton Six" trial received the case on Wednesday and deliberated as special police ringed the courthouse against demonstrations. The garment strike ended as agreement was reached on piece work pay rates.

June 15 Lillian went out and bought a lot of equipment for Eugene's stay at the Boy Scout camp. Former Defense Sec'y Louis Johnson testified at the MacArthur inquiry that Korea was bleeding us dry. He advocated a blockade of Red China. Four of the "Trenton Six" were acquitted by the jury. Two of the defendants however were declared guilty with a recommendation of mercy. A fight was pledged by all engaged in the defense to free the two. The dope inquiry heard sensational recordings by addicts of the widespread traffic in drugs and its easy accessibility in the city. A score of drug stores, bars, grocery and barber ships etc. were named as sellers. In the price war, department stores sold 59¢ aspirins for 5¢.

June 16 We went to the Kingsbridge to see "Born Yesterday" Judy Holliday who won the "Oscar" for her performance as the 'dumb' blonde who after a few lessons in "democracy" from Billy Holden realizes her fiance, millionaire Broderick Crawford is using his money to corrupt the government. We also saw "Stage to Tucson". A fire in a Montreal home for the aged killed 30.
