6/24-6/30/51

June 24 Sunday We went on a surprise trip to Hyde Park to see F.D.R.'s library and home. Pop and Harry took their cars. Harry's nephew and niece Sammy and Taubie also went with us. We ate at Howard Johnsons then visited the famous museum. The library is especially impressive holding mementos of FDR's entire life and hundreds of the wonderful gifts he got.

Since Taubie (Thelma) was Harry's sister, not his niece, Dad apparently made a mistake; perhaps it was Taubie's daughter who was with us.

June 25 Communists hurled Allied forces from two key hills. Lie urged action on Malik's call for negotiation for a cease-fire at the earliest date.

June 26 I went to see Dr Fishman about my eyes. I did not need new lenses. The doctor cleaned the pus from my left eye as my lid had become inflamed. He also gave me salt tablets for bathing the eye. Sylvia told us her teacher said she was like Maxwell House Coffee "Good to ........ The Chinese Communists endorsed Malik's truce offer. Supreme Court Justice H.C. Greenberg of N.Y. ordered the I.W.O. dissolved as "Communist dominated". The order allows for a 'stay' for appeal.

June 27 The UN started secret peace talks. UN troops were stalled for the second day by stubborn resistance. Acheson called a truce at the 38th parallel a UN. victory. Robert Rossen declared he was not a C.P. member or sympathizer to its aims now. He refused to answer questions about his past. J Edward Bromberg refused to answer any questions. Two defense workers refused to talk to a separate committee investigating communism in industry. Young dope addicts testified before Senators on the sordid tragedies of narcotics users - resort to prostitution crime. Furriers went out on strike.

June 28 US Ambassador Kirk and Gromyko talked in Moscow on the truce offer. The 16 nations fighting in Korea approved peace negotiations. The senate by 61-26 forbade rollback of food prices. Lillian took Eugene to Dr Holzman for a pre camp check-up. He was O.K. .... David Warfield is dead at 81.

Warfield was apparently actually 84.

June 29 Archbishop Groesz of Hungary received 15 years in prison for plotting to overthrow the gov't. Six other defendants were also sentenced, one to death. Lillian and Eugene went over to Creston Jr High at Creston and 181st where Eugene will enter in September. He will be in 7.S.P.2. Teacher - Mr. Silverstein. Several teachers spoke emphasizing scholarship, service and non-competitiveness.

I remember Mr. Silverstein only as the gym teacher who taught me how to properly attempt a layup, using the backboard.

June 30 Fighting slowed in Korea as everyone awaited a truce. We went to Fordham having ice cream sodas. I bought a pair of slacks in Adams - sale priced at $5.
