June 17 Fathers Day Sunday I got a shirt and pyjamas from the family. We went over to Mom and Pop for lunch and gave Pop liquor and ties. Lil & Harry were away for the week-end. Peggy slept at Mom's. She is worried that Susan, who is at Taubee's might cry. Eugene took two games from Pop after I went to work. In the morning I had gone to the school yard with the kids to play ball. Had a catch with Eugene and ran into a stone wall. Sylvia bounced her ball against the ball wall clapping hands before she catches it. She did this all the time we were there, paying no attention to us.

June 18 60000 N.M.U. members struck for a satisfactory contract and stopped all tourist ships. Chinese stopped their retreat and moved back into the "iron triangle" area. Secy Gen'l Lie proposed an offer of a truce to China with an all out offensive if she refuses it. A wild street fight took place in West Germany between 200 police and 2000 communist youth protesting re-militarization. Lil Altschuler called up that Thelma finally gave birth to a girl on Saturday. Thelma had to have transfusions afterward.

June 19 U.S. jets outfought "Red" Migs for the second consecutive day. French elections showed the C.P. tally the most votes again 22% to De Gaulle's 18% but the country moved toward the "right" as the the new election laws deprived the Communists of many seats.

June 20 Beat Mac Cohn in my first tennis of the season. Iran-British oil talks were broken off as Iran rejected a British offer of a financial advance instead of the profits of the Anglo-Iranian Oil Co.

June 21 Iran took over the Anglo Iranian Oil Co as Britain recalled its mission. F.B.I. agents in a series of early morning raids rounded up 17 Communist officials on the charge of conspiring to "teach and advocate the necessity of overthrowing the gov't by force and violence". This followed the Supreme Court decision upholding the conviction of the top "11". Those arrested are Marion Bachrach, E.G. Flynn, Betty Gannett, Claudia Jones, I. Amter, I. Begun, Bittelman, G Blake Charney, S. Gerson, A.J. [sic] Jerome, Arnold Johnson, Al Lannon, J Mindel, Pettis Perry, Trachtenberg, L. Weinstock, W. Weinstone. Four still sought are Fred Fine, Jim Jackson, Bill Norman and Sid Steinberg. Bail was set at $191,000.  

June 22 On Tuesday, Sarah R had taken Lil and the kids, Mildred W. and Lewis and Bobby and Danny to Orchard Beach. The kids didn't go bathing but splashed around at the edge. McCarthy's latest sensation is that Gen. Marshall and Acheson were Communist tools who were turning the country over to Soviet Russia. Gen. Ridgway asked the UN countries for more troops for Korea. Big Four talks on a proposed conference were broken off after 16 weeks. 

June 23 Frieda K. came over for a visit for the first time in several years. We had meat balls and spaghetti for supper and played anagrams with the kids. Mindszenty's successor, Hungarian Archbishop Groesz confessed he worked with other defendants to overthrow the government by armed revolt. The "House" approved the biggest tax bill in our history, $7,200,000,000 by a vote of 233-160. Reshevsky won the Wertheim Memorial Chess tournament here last week. Najdorf, Evans and Fine were also-rans. Fine, out of practice, was fourth.
