June 10 Sunday Went down to the Wellington to say goodbye to Uncle and Aunt Zola. Gertie and Irving were there already. Lillian has a bad cough and could not go downtown. Ernie Koslan over in the morning to discuss his problems.

June 11 Communists fell back fighting in Korea. A key part of their triangular defense was taken.

June 12 Communist artillery halted the Allies in Korea. Gen'l Wedemeyer testifying in MacArthur inquiry called for our withdrawal from Korea and a diplomatic break with Russia even at a risk of war. 65000 ILGWU workers struck in the first big walkout in 25 years. Police Commissioner Murphy was named to a lifetime Federal court post succeeding Judge Medina was succeeded retiring Judge Learned Hand on the Second Circuit Court of Appeals.

"was succeeded" should have been "who was succeeding". 

June 13 The state inquiry into the "dope" scandal opened at 8 [?] Center [sic] St. with a tape recorded story of a 16 year old Bronx girl who had gone from drugs to crime and prostitution. School Super. Jansen admitted there might be 1500 "dope" users in the schools and 5000 addicts in and out of schools. The Christian Democrat coalition barely defeated the C.P.- Left S.P. bloc in Italian elections - second round. Gen'l Wedemeyer urged a ring of air bases around Russia.  

June 14 Allied tanks entered Pyongyang. Two undercover agents from the Attorney Gen'l's office told lurid stories of teenagers bold traffic in dope and book-making in around [sic] the city Public Schools. The jury at the "Trenton Six" trial received the case on Wednesday and deliberated as special police ringed the courthouse against demonstrations. The garment strike ended as agreement was reached on piece work pay rates.

June 15 Lillian went out and bought a lot of equipment for Eugene's stay at the Boy Scout camp. Former Defense Sec'y Louis Johnson testified at the MacArthur inquiry that Korea was bleeding us dry. He advocated a blockade of Red China. Four of the "Trenton Six" were acquitted by the jury. Two of the defendants however were declared guilty with a recommendation of mercy. A fight was pledged by all engaged in the defense to free the two. The dope inquiry heard sensational recordings by addicts of the widespread traffic in drugs and its easy accessibility in the city. A score of drug stores, bars, grocery and barber ships etc. were named as sellers. In the price war, department stores sold 59¢ aspirins for 5¢.

June 16 We went to the Kingsbridge to see "Born Yesterday" Judy Holliday who won the "Oscar" for her performance as the 'dumb' blonde who after a few lessons in "democracy" from Billy Holden realizes her fiance, millionaire Broderick Crawford is using his money to corrupt the government. We also saw "Stage to Tucson". A fire in a Montreal home for the aged killed 30. The police and the state clashed on blame for the extensive "dope" traffic as the former made 21 arrests of sellers and addicts. Joe Louis scored the first K.o. [sic] of his comeback trail over Lee Savold in 6 rounds. Deadline Big League trades saw Bob Kuzava come to the Yanks for Ferrick Sanford and Porterfield (Senators). The Dodgers got Andy Pafko, Johnny Schmitz, Al Walker & Terwilliger for Joe Hatten, Bruce Edwards, Miksis and Hermanski (Cubs). The Cards got Wally Westlake and Cliff Chambers for Pollet, Garagiola, Howerton, Wilks and Cole (Pirates). The Yanks traded Tommy Byrne for the Browns Stubby Overmire.
