The "Big Four" agreed on an Arms Board for disarmament purposes. The extraordinary record breaking weather of the past weeks took a slight upturn in temperature. Lou Lippman, basketball "shaver" got a suspended sentence. Eddy Stanky was traded to the "Cards" to play and manage them. The Giants got Lanier and Diering.

12/2-12/8/51

Dec 2. Sunday Eugene belongs to the Children's Book Guild at school and also borrows books from the school library. More C.C.N.Y. basketball players are out as the grades of Smith, Bragin and Chenetz were found to have been altered.

Dec 3. Korean "reds" agreed to inspection behind the lines by neutral countries and a freeze on men and arms in a further step to an armistice.

Dec 4. Last night Sam slept here having forgotten his keys while Molly went to spend the night at Lena's. Sylvia is home with a virus in her neck glands. She had been complaining of pain there for a week. Yesterday Lillian taking Eugene to Dr Morson for his last needle (after his scalp gash) took Sylvia along. She had 101 temp but it is down now. Egyptian riots against the British in Suez resulted in many killed and wounded. Terror against Negroes and Jews in Miami continued. Scores of Internal Revenue collectors have been dismissed for corruption.

Dec 5. I bought Lillian a perfume syringe and she got me a wallet. The F.B.I. investigated me in the house and Sam Goode tuned our piano. Russia OK'd A-plant inspections when the UN outlawed the A bomb. More were killed in the Suez. 5000 bus strikers agreed to a no-stirke policy before television cameras.

Dec 5 was Mom and Dad's wedding anniversary. The F.B.I. investigation was presumably due to Dad's Federal employment (by the Post Office).

Dec 6. Casualties continued to mount in Suez riots. Tito freed Archbishop Stepinac but barred him from his post. Chief counsel of the Internal Revenue Bureau C. Oliphant resigned rather than be the target of "vilificationa and rumors".

Dec 7. Eugene got his first failure on his report card - in science. His other marks were good. Lillian saw his teacher Mr Brandon who couldn't account for it. Sylvia got a fine report card including an "outstanding" for composition. Several boys have been "after" Eugene in school so Lillian called them on the phone as he didn't seem opposed to it. The incident doesn't seem to be serious. Lillian took Sylvia to the school bazaar in the evening to 9:15 PM. They bought a dress for Lillian $1.46, a bracelet for Sylvia 5¢, loose leaf re-inforcements, cookies, 4 yards of plastic, pads, cake, 5 comics for 10¢, key chain for Eugene. Sup't of Schools Jansen was given the sole power to oust present or former communists. 3000 leftist students in Iran were mobbed by 5000 troops and 1000 Nationalists. Several were killed, hundreds were injured. The mob then went on to pillage and destroy Communist and Anti-gov't newspaper offices. Joe Jackson is dead at 64, Harold Ross at 59 and J Edward Bromberg at 47.

Dec 8. Non-political, co-discoverer of penicillin Dr Chain was barred from this country. The spotlight of the tax scandal is turning on Supreme Court Justice Clark and Att'y Gen'l McGrath. Ass't Att'y Gen'l Caudle has already been dismissed by Truman and several have resigned. Judge Streit suspended sentences on three Bradley basketball players, Melchiorre, Mann and Chianakis who had "fixed" games, but lashed Bradley U for corrupting its players.

11/25-12/1/51

Nov. 25 Sunday We went to Lil and Harrys to partake of the turkey Harry had gotten from a customer. Present also were mom and pop, Mrs Thaw, Diana, Sol and Sammy & Tobie, Taubee Harry and Peggy. We were kidding around and bought Peggy for 15¢. She decided to go home with us and heaven and earth could not change her mind. She said good bye to daddy and mommy, packed her things - socks, [torn - unreadable], dress, etc. and was off with us. At the party, Susan and Sylvia sold Susan's paintings and paper cups, the proceeds to go to poor children of Israel.

Nov. 26 Peggy is adorable, good as gold and smart as a whip. She makes up stories, songs and poems. She is also capricious, refusing to take a little toy I bought her. She told me to give it to Sylvia. Mediators in Korea agreed on a truce time.

Nov. 27 Eisenhower came out for a big army, the a-bomb and the use of German troops.

Nov. 28 Czech vice premier Slansky was ousted and arrested for "activities against the state".

Nov. 29 Our troops in Korea stopped shooting except in self defence as truce talks continued. The prosecution wound up its case against 29 cops charged with connivance with gamblers. We had our first mock air raid here with all the trimmings. Lillian read "The President's Lady" - Irving Stone.

11/18-11/24/51

Nov. 18 Sunday We went out to visit Al Pope. Eugene won a chess game from Al while I lost one. Danny showed card tricks and played "war" and "go fish" with Sylvia. We had a delicatessen suppoer of franks, beans etc. Eugene finished eating last. Danny is a sweet bright boy.

Nov. 19 The "Big Three" will propose an Arms cutting board whose proposals will be presented to a conference of all countries having substantial armaments.

Nov. 20 Eugene has forgotten to do homework several times. He brought home a note to that effect yesterday. Gambler Sal Sollazzo and five basketball players were given jail sentences in the "fix" scandal. Judge Streit lashed out at College "recruiting" subsidizing and lowering of standards for athletes as he sentenced White, Warner, Roth, Schaff and Eddie Gard to six months up to three year sentences. Sollazzo received 8-16 years. Nine other players received suspended sentences.

Nov. 21 Judge McGuire tossed the government's case against Dr DuBois and the Peace Info. Center out of court before it went to the jury. He stated the charge that it was under foreign control had not been proved. The atrocity total was now down to 365 proved and 6000 possible. City College announced it would drop big time athletics as a result of Judge Streit's denunciation of college commercialization.

Nov. 22 Thanksgiving We had our delicious turkey dinner with sweet yams, brussell [sic] sprouts, cranberry sauce, stuffing.

Nov. 23 Lil got herself a pink hat and some shoes. Egypt supported Russia in the UN on banning the Atom bomb first before an arms census. An accident on the N.H. railroad on the Anniversary of last years tragic crash saw 28 passengers injured. It happened in the tunnel under Park Ave and 56 st. In the evening we went to Yankel's apt. for Ida and Max's 40th Anniversary surprise party. Sylvia watched television till 10 o'clock and Eugene until Henry Ko'd Bobby Baker at 11:30 PM. At the party were mom and pop, Lil and Harry, Abe and Blume, Anne Mack and Barbara who did her ventriloquist act, Sandra and Edeen, Mr & Mrs Spivack and his sister, Hymie Feldenkreitz, Sadie, Rachel & Mayer, Harry, Molly and Lilly, Frieda. Freddy and Bobby showed up for a few minutes. We brought a chocolate cake Lil baked and a tray containing a glass swan with a Chinese plant in it. We had champagne, hors d'oeuvres, pickled lox, herring, cole slaw, potato salad, chopped egg salad, cheeses, knishiklach [sic], schnapps, etc.

11/11-11/17/51

Nov. 11 Sunday The UN again banned Red China's entrance into the organization. Sigmund Romberg is dead at 64. Eugene and I went to the Boy Scout father and son camping trip. We rode by two cars (six fathers, ten sons and "Buggsy", the leader) to a suburb of Yonkers where we played football, soft ball and ate cooked meals. Eugene passed his cooking test. We had soup hamburgers cocoa and cookies.

I remember the trip, but I don't remember 17 people crowded into two cars!

Nov. 12 We went down to an amusement arcade on 42 st. where the kids played machines: bowling, hockey, baseball, etc. Then we had hot dogs, french fried and drinks, picked up ties and wool and went home. Eugene got a little figure of a cowboy and Sylvia a statue of liberty as prizes at the Arcade. The kids also got packages of ten comic books each at 39¢ a package. They are 10¢ each on the stand. A truce line was finally agreed upon in Korea. The Bureau of Labor Statistics reported the 1939 dollar is now worth 44¢. A coroners jury in Florida killed cleared the sheriff of guilt in murdering the "Little Scottsboro" prisoner, Sam Shepherd.

Nov. 13 Peron was re-elected in Argentina by a 4-1 margin.

Nov. 14 Two Supreme Court rulings hit a[t] unlawful police acts such as seizure without warrants and evidence obtained from an illegally detained suspect. Rogge turned gov't informer and appeared against The Peace Information Center and Dr DuBois.

Nov 15 Lillian caught Eugene taking a quarter from her purse. Evidently his allowance (75¢) is too small. His carfare is free and he get [sic] his lunch money in addition. Lil saw Eugene's teachers during open school week. Mrs. Rosen said he showed no imagination. As a whole his work is satisfactory. The US Army charged 6000 American prisoners of war have been slain by Chinese and No.Koreans. Congressmen demanded use of the A-bomb. New York had its first mock atomic air raid involving 300,000 C.D. workers.

Nov. 16 Eugene had an accident in "shop" today, gashing his scalp as he arose after bending down to pick up a pencil. He hit a stake on a work table. Mr. Brandon took him home after the school doctor bandaged him. Lillian then took him to Dr Mersen who took three stitches and gave him a tetanus injection. Eugene's shop teacher Mr. Galinko called up to ask about him and praised his conduct after the incident very highly. Lillian had gone to P.S. 86 in the morning and saw Sylvia shine in her class and play nicely in the  auditorium (Indian Dance in the Firelight). Elmer Rice took a stand against the red scare withdrawing form the Celanese Theater on television because in censored its actors politically along "Red Channels" line. Mary Simkhovitch is dead at 84.

I actually dropped the pencil under an anvil, used for shaping sheet metal, in sheet metal shop, and hit my head on the anvil. I felt the blow, but just went over to a board to note something, rubbed my head, and found my hand was bloody. I immediately went over to the teacher, whose name, I'm sure, was Mr. Galenka, and, since he was talking with a parent (as Dad noted yesterday, it was open school week), he tried to shoo me away, saying "Can't you see I'm talking to a parent?". I held out my bloody hand, pointed to my head, and he immediately grabbed my hair, and took me to the school doctor. They bandaged me all around the head, so that Mr. Brandon, who was our science teacher, instructed me to call upstairs to Mom so she wouldn't be frightened of my appearance.

Nov. 17 Sylvia drew "Told Under the Green Umbrella" - Intern'l [unreadable] Union, "Make It Yourself" B.W. Carlson, "The Runaway Soldier" Tales of Old Russia by F. Gottschalk, "Boarding School" R. Woody. Eugene drew "The Southpaw from San Fran." - Phil Harkins, "Tommy's Wonderful Airplane" - E. Clymer, "Heroes of Civilization" Cotter and Jaffe and "Pass That Puck" R.T. Flood.

Sylvia went to the Zoo yesterday with her class. Eugene came home with "Como esta usted" which he had finally learned in school. However he failed in one Spanish test. He is a tutor in "math". Eugene, Geoffrey & Bobby R. went to the RKO Fordham to see "The Day the Earth Stood Still" and "Tarzan's Peril" with Lex Barker. They became separated in the crowd and Geoffrey came home alone.

A Florida Sheriff murdered "Little Scottsboro" case prisoner Sam Shepherd and critically wounded Walter Irvin claiming attempted escape as he was transporting them to the scene of a new trial ordered by the Supreme Court.

Nov 9 The U.S. and Russia attacked each other's disarmament plans. Vishinsky asked for a World Arms parley. Acheson urged Russia to end the Korean war. The 25 day pier strike ended with a special state fact finding board sifting the issues.

Nov 10 The C.I.O. unanimously re-elected Murray and Carey and criticized Eisenhower.

Oct 21 Sunday We went to see the beautiful "Cyrano de Bergerac" with Jose Ferrer and "Kind Hearts and Coronets" with Alec Guiness. At the Lido. 85¢ and 25¢. The latter was a farce in which Guiness, in line for the title and estate of a dukedom kills off all the prior claimants and is accused of a murder of which he is innocent. Later the kids went to the Simchas Torah celebration at the temple and got only jelly apples. We went up to the temple for a half hour.

Oct 22 Jersey dockers went out on strike. The naming of Gen Mark Clark as the first envoy to the envoy [sic] brought nationwide protests. She must drink skimmed milk and take terramycin capsules. The dock strike had its first violence. A Unionists car was stoned cutting two men with flying glass. The Stork Club was picketed by Walter White, Laura Hobson and other prominent people over the Josephine Baker snub there.

Oct 24 The N.M.U. came out in support of the dock strikers as the strike widened thru the East Coast. Egyptian police battled revolutionary crowds.

Oct 25 Sylvia's temp was 99.8 in the morning. She vomited and was in pain. She ate very little and could not be persuaded to take much tea which she dislikes. 15,000 milk drivers sturck for high wages.

I disliked tea, also, when I was young. Took me a long time in adulthood before I started liking it.

Oct 26 Sylvia had a bad day yesterday, in pain all day and vomiting three times. Today she was much better. She takes the capsules dissolved in milk only. The Conservative Party with Churchill regained power in the general elections in England. It was a slim margin of about 36 seats. 10/7-10/13/51

Dad used a whole page between the 10/6 and 10/7 entries for the Worlds Series box scores and some season award notes, scanned in below.

Oct 7 Sunday Giants won third 6-2. Lockman homered with 2 on. We went to see Pop yesterday. He walks rather feebly and finds it difficult to change from a sitting to standing position and vice versa. Sylvia got two dresses, pyjamas and socks from mom and Lil for her birthday.

Oct 8 Lillian went down to Macy's to buy a much needed mattress on a 1 day sale at $46.95. Communists finally agreed to a resumption of cease fire negotiations at a new site.

Oct 9 Sylvia's birthday - Yom Kippur eve Yanks wins [sic] fourth 6-2. DiMaggio homered. Dark hit three doubles. Sylvia got a watch from us $7.50, pyjamas from Norma, a bracelet from Arline D. Sylvia is delighted with her watch for which she has been pleading for weeks. Eugene drew "Famous American Athletes of Today" - Frank Waldman, "Away to Sea", SW Meader, "Rookie of the Year" JR Tunis, "The Amazing Journey of David Ingram" Eric P Kelly. Sylvia drew "David's Railroad" C. Wooley, "Games for Boys and Girls", E.O. Harbin, "Sue Ann's Busy Day" Sally Scott, "The Jolly Season" Lilla Stirling.

Interestingly, when I was checking on the book names, I found that Silvia had previously taken out "David's Railroad" on February 3, 1951.

Oct 10 Yanks win fifth 13-1. McDougald, rookie, grand slams. Egypt voided its pact with England, shutting her out of the Suez Canal and Sudan. Wallace called Budenz a liar, Stassen called Jessup a liar, etc. The kids went down to Childrens' services at the temple. 9/30-10/6/51

Sept 30 Sunday In a tremendous game the Dodgers stayed in the pennant race by defeating the Phillies on the last day of the season 9-8 in 14 innings. The Dodgers came from 4-0, 6-1, 8-5. Jackie Robinson saved the game in the 13th with a diving catch and homered in the 14th to win. The Dodgers had frittered away a 13 1/2 game lead and collapsed entirely the final week. The Giants beat the Braves earlier in the day and must play off with the Dodgers for the pennant. They have won 37 out of the last 44 and seven straight. Played Eugene a chess game and he was out of practice.

October 1 Rosh Hashonah Sanitation workers are slowing down in a drive for better wages and 40 hour week. We had Mike's, Sam's and Milton's family over for dinner. Seth as usual played the piano and led the applause. Sylvia played "The Elf and the Fairy", Eugene "The Wild Rider" and Isabel "The Spinning Song". Eugene and Isabel played the "Parker" baseball game. Eugene Plotnikoff is dead.

A picture, scanned in below, was pasted in the middle of this entry, with the title "Eugene and Sylvia in September 1951".

Oct 2 We went over to Mom's for lunch. Rochel, Mayer and Sadie also in adition to the usual. Peggy said "I pledge Allegiance" and improvised some songs. We saw the Dodgers with Labine trounce the Giants 10-0 to tie the playoff. Eugene and pop played a chess game.

I remember that disappointing game very well. A month earlier, on 9/3, Dad wrote "Harry "hexed" the Giants as usual", Harry being our uncle; Dad's brother-in-law. I assume he was actually a Dodger fan; he certainly seemed to take pleasure in Dad's and my disappointment!

Oct 3 Lil had xrays at Dr Robbins. British technicians pulled out of Iran under pressure. Jansen opened a new "Red" quiz against three H.S. teachers - Terry Rosenbaum, Max Gilgoff and Sam Wallach.

Oct 4 In a miracle finish, Bobby Thomson homered in ninth with two on to win the pennant for the Giants 5-4 to climax the greatest comeback ever. Truman reported that Russia has set off another A-bomb.

At school, for some reason we were lined up outside a school office and the game was on the radio, and I heard the first Dodger run score. Hurried home as quickly as I could after school, but stopped outside a TV store where lots of people were watching the game in the window, and saw the Giants tie the game. Then got home in time to see the Dodgers score three in the top of the eighth. And, of course, the exciting bottom of the ninth. Most memorable to me, when Thomson came up, Mom, who was laying on the couch watching the game with me, said "Oooh, oooh, hit a home run!" To which I exasperatedly said "No, no, just a single"; a single would tie the game, and the baseball gods don't like it if you ask them for a home run if you only need a single. But Mom knew best.

As soon as the game was over, our downstairs neighbor, Madeline Gallins, came running upstairs and we danced around the room. You can be assured that the dancing was not my idea.

Oct 5 The Giants took the 1st 5-1. Dark homered with 2 on. Irvin stole home and got 4 hits - tying two records. Racketeer Willy Moretti was killed by four men to stop him from talking.

Oct 6 The Yanks take 2ND 3-1. The UN reported that the "Red"s winter line has been broken. Pop fell two stories when a wooden horse on which his ladder was resting broke a leg. Xrays were negative though pop hurt his back, wrist and elbow.

"Pop", meaning our grandfather, was an ironworker.

9/23-9/29/51

Sept 23 Sunday Both kids didn't want to go to Sunday school which is just starting. After much urging they went and liked it. In the afternoon we went out window shopping in Fordham. Sam and Molly dropped in in the evening.

Sept 24 A referendum in Australia to ban the C.P. failed by 150,000 votes.

Sept 25 The Staten Island racketeering probe started. Henry Wallace re-embraced Chiang Kai-Shek. Eugene got brown shoes at Miles 6D $5. Eugene drew "Walter Johnson" R.L. Treat, "Son of the Valley" J.R. Tunis, "Visibility Unlimited" Dick Grace, "The American Cowboy" Will James. Sylvia drew "What Wildflower is it" - Anna Pistorius, "The Latch Key Club" E. Clymer, "The Double Birthday Present" M.L. Hunt and "Betsy and the Boys" - C. Haywood. The B'klyn rackets Grand Jury demanded that top cops be fired.

Sept 26 Eugene gets his lunch at school for 15¢. He gets soup, sandwich, fruit and milk.

Sept 27 The "Big Three" promised to remove restrictions on Italy's re-arming. The kids had Xrays at Dr Robbins.

Sept 28 Harry Gross was sentenced to 12 years in prison for book making and conspiracy. Staten Island Comm of Public Works Ed Ruppell quit his post after revelations of gouges from liquor license seekers. McCarthy's attack on Ambassador at-large Jessup fizzled as several Senators hit back at him.

Sept 29 An Argentine Army revolt was crushed by Peron in two hours. Gross testified "bookies" contributed to O'Dwyer's Mayoralty campaign. Sen Benton called for McCarthy's expulsion from the Senate as a liar. The Giants tied the Dodgers for the N.L. lead in the sensational spurt from 13 1/2 games behind on Aug 11. The Yanks clinched the A.L. pennant by winning two from the Red Sox. Reynolds pitched his second no-hitter of the season in the opener. Lillian has caught a cold in the sudden change of weather.

The box score from Reynolds' no-hitter was pasted in here.

9/16-9/22/51

Sept 16 Sunday Lil, Mike, Harry, Sam and Molly went to the Cemetery this morning. Molly and Sam came home with Lil and stayed here till 6. While Sylvia played with her friends I went to the park with Eugene. He "sold" many acorns to the squirrels as he has been doing recently. Lillian read "The Family Moskat" - I.B. Singer. We both read "My Life with Dreiser" - Helen Dreiser, and "The Wall" - John Hersey.

Sept 17 Eugene stayed home this morning with a "belly-ache". He still balks at eggs. Sylvia has a few fingers full of dry cereal with a few drops of milk in the morning. But give her a full plate of meat. Billy Klem is dead at 77. Gelett Burgess is dead at 86.

Sept 18 At the graft cops trial it was charged corruption leads right up to the Police Commissioners office.

Sept 19 UN and Communist representatives conferred at the latter's request as deadly fighting continued. Another Hollywood film probe went into its third day. The most prominent witness so far was Michael Gordon who refused to answer most of the questions. Chief bookie Harry Gross balked at further questions after identifying each of the 18 police defendants.

Sept 20 Harry Gross refused to testify and was given $15000 fine and 5 years in jail. The 18 police defendants were released in a sensational development. The Cicero grand jury indicted the victims of the recent riots and exonerated the racist rioters.

Sept 21 The Municipal Civil Service Comm. refused to give out information on illegal political jobs held by hundreds of "hacks".

Sept 22 Pop got us two tickets for the Giants-Braves ball gave. Lillian and the kids met me at 161st and took my box of ties while I took Eugene to the Polo Grounds. We saw Jansen beat Spahn 4-1. Dewey ordered Staten Island D.A. disqualified after having a woman forcibly arrested without a warrant after she had testified she saw the D.A. at a gambling joint. Ford Frick was elected Baseball Commissioner to succeed Happy Chandler.

It is extremely strange to me that I don't remember going to that game.

9/9-9/15/51

Sept 9 Sunday Split with Buhr at Woodlawn were we met Sam and Molly. Molly was very ill and they went home early. Sam and Eugene watched the ball game. We took many pictures. Going home we walked through the woods ending up at McLean Ave near where we got the #4 bus. 49 nations signed the Jap. peace treaty. Russia, Poland and Czecho denounced it.

Sept 10 The kids went off to school, Eugene starting at P.S. 79 - Creston Jr. High School. Hearst failed to bar Lena Horne from Ed Sullivan's T.V. show.

Sept 11 Sylvia's teacher is Mrs Hannagan, her class is 4-1, Room 405. She had a spelling test of "hard" words missing three - autumn, adjust, clothes. The gambling conspiracy trial of 18 policemen opened with the 25 spectators allowed in the court, frisked for concealed weapons. The newly formed rightist Greek Rally Party of Gen. Papagos won the Greek election.

Sept 12 Eugene has five women & men teachers. A detective and an arsonist were killed in an explosion at 9 W 18 st. A million dollars damage was caused in the plot to burn down a loft for the $20,000 insurance. Gen Ridgway admitted an accidental raid on Kaesong as charged by the Koreans. Hank Deberry is dead at 56.

Sept 13 Defense Sec'y Marshall resigned and was replaced by Robert Lovett. Ray Robinson regained his middleweight title by defeating his conqueror, the British Randy Turpin by a T.K.O. in the 10th round before 60,000 at the Polo Grounds. 9/2-9/8/51

Sept 2 Sunday Very bad weather caused us to call of the picnic we were to have with Anne & Mac and Lil & Harry at Tibbetts. Lil went down to Louis Nelson's funeral in the morning. In the afternoon we watched the Giants trounce the Dodgers 11-2 to go to five games behind. Don Mueller, a "single" hitter made it 5 homers in the two game series. Abe Cahan is dead at 91. Earl Cochell was suspended by the U.S.L.T.A. for unsportsmanship-like conduct for his disgraceful exhibition at Forest Hills.

Sept 3 Labor Day Another poor day. We invited Lil and Harry over and had tongue, hot dogs, potato salad, etc. Harry "hexed" the Giants as usual, they splitting with the Phillies as the Dodgers swept the Braves to go six games ahead. Susan and Sylvia took out the baking set as usual and ground bread and grapes. Peggy scampered around everywhere. We had hoped mom and pop would be coming home and stop here and sure enough they spied Sylvia in the street as they passed and stopped to find Peggy and Susan there also. They came up and told us about Loch Sheldrake over the coffee. Sylvia got a pocket book and Eugene a dollar. 37 are dead in a a startling fishing boat accident off Montauk point. A gale capsized the over-loaded Pelican panicking the 56 on board. More Communists were arrested - Dobbs, Carlson, Spector.

Seixas 6-4, 6-1, 6-1 Veterans Singles McGuffin [sic] d. Sisson 6-3, 6-3. Mixed Doubles Sedgman-Hart d. Rose-Fry 6-3, 6-2. Womens Singles Connally (not yet 17) d. Fry 6-3, 1-6, 6-4.

Sept 5 Sarah R. came over with Bobby then took Eugene back to spend the day. It was disclosed that the U.S. Army launched a victorious drive while the peace talks had been going on. Two U.N. employees who had been fired for "leftist" leanings were ordered re-instated by the UN Supreme Court. The Japanese Peace Treaty Conference opened in San Francisco. Louis Adamic 52 was found shot to death in his burning farm house. As he had turned Titoist there are charges of murder.

Sept 6 Sylvia drew "The Hundred Dresses" - E. Estes, "The Wonderful Baker" Mabel L. Hunt, "Twelve Months Make a Year" E. Coatsworth, "Pippi Longstocking" A. Lindgren. Eugene drew "Good Field No Hit" D. Decker, "George and his horse Bill - R.F. Alsop, "Great Husky" E.B. Tracy, "The Mysterious Island" J Verne. Red China was barred from the San Fran. parley. Acheson gagged Gromyko. Truman invoked the Taft-Hartley injunction process to get the copper miners back to work.

Sept 7 Lil and Madeline went down to Macy's and Gimbels last night. They left at 530 and were home by 10 P.M. They were looking for rotisseries. The kids managed all right. The T.U.C. supported the gov't by a close margin. The Teachers Union was barred from meetings in the Schools.

8/26-9/1/51

Aug 26 Sunday I gave Lil a nylon slip which she had wanted for her birthday. The kids made cards as usual. At noon Harold Levine and Milly drove us to Forest Hills. We paid $1.50 and got the kids in as juniors at 25¢ each by making out E.L.T.A. applications. Eugene was interested but Sylvia mostly annoyed us. We skipped lunch but had hot dogs, ice cream, cracker jacks, pop corn, soda. We saw the Doubles finals which had been postponed for rain several times. McGregor and Sedgman beat Rose and Candy 10-8, 6-4, 4-6, 6-2. A good match was Bartzen's fight against Seixas 4-6, 6-0, 4-6, 6-0, 6-3. We had to keep the kids warm at the end (7 PM) as it has been beautiful and cool for four days. At home we took in Chow Mein and egg rolls.

I was interested, as Dad says, but I really didn't want to go; I remember very clearly wanting to stay home and watch the Giants' game on TV, as they were 14 games into what became a 16 game winning streak, getting them back in the pennant race. I also remember the applications we filled out, saying we intended to become members of the Eastern Lawn Tennis Association.

Aug 27 Gave the kids tennis lessons at Walton. Then at St. James the kids "won" each other at nok-hockey, Eugene winning seven games. Lillian read "The Rest they Need" Herbert Lyons.

Aug 28 Lost to Levine. Bobby and Danny came over and I took all the kids to St James where they played nok-hockey and ball. Bobby tore his pants and Eugene broke a lens.

Aug 29 Eugene drew "Journey to the Center of the Earth" - Verne, "Clutch Hitter" - R. Wayne, "A Treasure Chest of Sea Stories" - MJ Herzberg, "Scotty Allen, King of the Dog Team Drivers", Shannon Garst. Sylvia drew "The Drugstore Cat" Ann Petry, "Two Hundred Pennies" - C. Wooley, "Tommy and his Dog Hurry" H Ferris, "Storm on the Island" E.F. Lattimore. Ridgway rejected a proposal to re-examine the alleged bombing spot. The Nat'l Student Congress voted 220-48 to denounce McCarthyism. Seven Communists were arrested in Hawaii in the "Red" drive. The Giants lost to the Pirates 2-0 to break their 16 game winning streak.

Aug 30 Judge Metzger who reduced the bail of the seven Hawaiian "Reds" faces an ouster. Screen star Robert Walker choked to death after taking a sedative for an emotional disturbance.

Aug 31 Beat Hotez. Peking charged a new bombing of neutral Kasong [sic]. Minor fighting has been going on while truce negotiations pend. At the V.F.W. convention here McCarthy was attacked by Secy of Labor Frances Tobin then invited to defend himself which he did.

Interestingly, the then-Secretary of Labor was Maurice Tobin. The previous Secretary of Labor was Frances Perkins. It appears Dad conflated the two names.

Sept 1 Eugene has been working on the Book of Knowledge Centerville for weeks. It is a village of cardboard including bungalows, church, town hall, gas station, etc. We went to Woodlawn but could find no more berries. It was such a dismal day that we went home early. Supreme Court Justice Douglas created an uproar in Congress when he called for the recognition of Red China in order to split it from Russia.

One year, at Christmastime, our building superintendent asked to borrow the cardboard town to put around their Christmas tree.

8/19-8/25/51

Aug 19 Sunday Lost to Goldberg and beat Roseman as Eugene played nok-hockey and won five games. Sylvia was in bed again. She played checkers with us, read, wove and played with the anagrams. Eugene won a word game from me.

Aug 20 We forced Eugene to get out of the house so he went to St. James and played nok-hockey. Bobby and Danny came over so he had someone to play with after lunch. We got Sylvia to get out of bed and try to walk. Her first attempt gave her a little pain. We took her to Dr Schmith who changed her dressing and was pleased with the wound.

Aug 21 Beat Hotez. Judge Weinfeld again denounced the gov'ts bail policy on leftists. He ordered $5000 bail for Bittelman to be accepted. An ambush in Korea has resulted in another snag in the negotiations. Negro vet Robert Kelly was slain by a Trenton cop.

Aug 22 The kids played nok-hockey in St James, Sylvia still limping. Eugene won several games. "Reds" charged violations increasing the truce crisis. An estimated half to two million leftists youths ended a two week peace demonstration in East Berlin. Delegates from 70 countries including 50 U.S. youths attended.

Aug 23 Beat Warner. Truce talks were broken off when the "reds" charged their barracks were attacked with napalm bombs. Allied negotiators denied it. Quill chartered a cops Union in secret claiming 120 delegates present. The Appeals Court upset Remington's perjury conviction on technical grounds. L.H. champ Joe Maxim a 7-5 underdog shellacked Bob Murphy in 15 rounds.

Aug 24 Home from work. Dr Schmith took out Sylvia's stitches today. Sylvia got brown shoes at Miles 3 1/2D $4.49. Larry Evans 19 year old sensation, won the U.S. Chess Championship nosing out Reshevsky.

Aug 25 Stanley took us to Woodlawn picking up Molly on the way. However a storm sent us scurrying home soon. We spent the rest of the day watching television movies including the fine Italian film "Shoe shine". Ridgway rejected the "Red" charges peremporally [sic] but offered to resume negotiations.

8/12-8/18/51

Aug 12 Sunday Beat Blazer. Mom and pop took us over to Woodlawn where we ate lunch on a cloudy humid day. Eugene and I picked berries as Lil was resting. Pop came back at 4 and Lil Harry and the kids at 5. Peggy enjoyed herself rolling down a small hill on her side. We had to leave at 6:30 as it finally rained. Pop took us home picking up mama at Gun Hill. At home showered with Sylvia. She takes her doll to bed with her every night.

Aug 13 [paper torn]y Bobby R came around with Sarah and a [paper torn] kids played punchball in the yard.

Aug 14 Lil Madeline and the kids went to Orchard Beach. Lil didn't go in the water.

Aug 15 Beat H. Levitt. Gen Ridgway handed an ultimatum to the "reds" to accept our truce terms or fight. [paper torn] is dead at 88.

One word, the name of the person who died, is not there, as the paper is torn (the first couple of pages of Book 7 are pretty well torn on the edges). But William Randolph Hearst died that day, at the age of 88, so it's a good bet that "Hearst" was the missing word.

Aug 16 The A.F.L. bolted the United Labor Policy [unreadable] on the grounds that the C.I.O. had used the Committee to strengthen itself. Federal Judge Weinfeld questioned Atty Genl McGrath's political "means test" for bail for "reds". Artur Schacht is dead at 69.

Aug 17 The last of the second team Communists was released on bail. Bailers were closely questioned. Ferdinand Smith has voluntarily left the country and [paper torn] deported Alren [?] Elizabeth Bentley and Whittaker Chambers put on their act before the Senate Comm investigating the Institute of Pacific Relations. Hiss, Barnes, Duggan, [paper torn] were again named as leftists. Teachers have [paper torn] $400 pay boosts. The extra curricular [paper torn]. Louis Jouvet is dead at 63. In the morning [paper torn] played nok-hockey, Eugene scored his first [paper torn]. He won three in a row. Sylvia won one game. [paper torn] 6 o'clock preparatory to taking her shower Sylvia [paper torn] on the hamper and tipped it. She fell and cut her leg on a sharp socket. Lillian got Dr Schmith [?] in the Towers who took four five stitches in the wound which penetrated to the bone. He put penicillin in the wound and prescribed some orally every three hours. I took two hours vacation and came home when Lillian called me. Jerry and Madeline helped Lillian a bit.

Aug 18 Sylvia is resting very well and has no temperature. She is in bed and must not bend her leg. S[paper torn] and the kids dropped in before taking the t[paper torn] back to Syracuse and had lunch here. Stanley [paper torn] Eugene and me to Woodlawn where we picked [paper torn] cans of berries. Betty Ann and Kathy and Norma came with presents for Sylvia. Steve Nelson, Jim Dolsen, A. [paper torn] Bill Albertson, Ben Careathers and Irv Weissman were picked [paper torn] by the F.B.I. Eugene drew "Klondike Gold" - H.V. Korwell [?], "On The Trail of Grant & Lee" - F.T. Hill "Five Weeks in a Balloon" Jules Verne and "World Series" J.R. Tunis. I drew for Sylvia "Betsy's Little Star" and "Eddie and the Fire Engine" - C. Hayward, "Ginnie and Geneva" Cath. Woolley and "Betsy and the [torn paper] Hat" - Mary Winston [?].

8/11/51

Aug 11 The kids played Nok-hockey at St. James. Sylvia won her first game there, beat another boy and then beat Eugene 8-6 after he led 5-1. He hasn't played so much as she. After lunch we went out to see Thelma and Harold in Bayside on a hot, humid, day. Lil was there also. We saw sweet little Andrea and had supper there. Mother Bloor is dead at 89.
