5/31-6/6/53

May 31 Sunday It was still bad weather and we stayed in after I had gone downtown for ties. Sylvia accompanied me. I owe her a present as we could get nothing for her. On the television we saw films on spiders and lions on the Museum of Natural History's "Adventure" series, story of Marconi on "Hall of Fame", the Dreyfuss [sic] Trial on "You Are There". Dr Frederic Ernst is dead at 70.

June 1 ...

June 2 Sylvia's temp went down to normal and she watched television all day. The City leased its transit lines to a N.Y.C. Transit Authority for ten years. Mt. Everest was conquered for the first time by a British expedition. It was under the leadership of Col. H.C.J. Hunt.

June 3 Sylvia was dressed and out of bed today. Elizabeth was crowned yesterday in Westminster Abbey as millions paid homage to her in the rain.

June 4 Sylvia returned to school. Six men were indicted in Miami for racial terrorism. William Farnum is dead. Tilden is dead at 60.

June 5 An important baseball trade saw Ralph Kiner, Joe Garagiola, Howie Pollet, George Metkovich going to the Cubs for Bob Schultz, Toby Atwell, Gene Hermanski, Preston Ward and Bob Addis  an option on the purchase of George Freese and $100,000. Roland Young is dead.

June 6 Sylvia and the Intermediates went to Rye by special buses where they had a great time in Playland. Eugene and his troop went to Alpine for the Annual Camporee. They slept over in tents on groundcloths. Mr Hoffman cooked for the troop. Lillian saw "Come Back Little Sheba" with Shirley Booth at the Kingsbridge.

This last sentence was not in red in the diary, and was not transcribed here in red, but Blogger doesn't recognize the change back to black. That also applies to this comment.

May 24 Sunday We went over to see Frieda as her aunt died. The kids played with Coleman and George. Leaving we rode over to Coney Island at the kids insistence. They went on the whip. Sylvia went on the carousel. Eugene tried out the bat-a-way. He hit one over the first barrier. We had ice cream, pizza and French fried potatoes.

May 26 The Rosenberg's appeal was denied for the third time by the Supreme Court. An atomic shell was shot from a gun for the first time. It travelled [sic] seven miles. Max Surkont - Braves struck out 8 successive Cincinnati batters to set a new record. Jack Skelly is dead at 83.

May 27 The US expelled a Rumanian diplomat for attempting to bribe a naturalized American of Rumanian descent to become a spy. Aaron Copeland denied had had ever been a Communist. Nat Witt, John Abt and Julius Joseph refused to answer questions. Albert Spalding is dead at 64.

May 28 Taft's suggestion for the U.S. to forget the U.N. as far as Korea is concerned and go it alone has been widely criticized. Jesse Burkett is dead at 84.

The following box score was taped in over this entry. Strangely enough, Dad left out the part as to how long the game actually was. It was 3:52, and that record has been overtaken by a lot.

May 29 Police and firemen were put on the 42 hour week. Lillian read "Spark of Life" E.M. Remarque.

May 30 Memorial Day For the fourth time Judge Kaufman set a date for the Rosenberg's death - the week of June 15. Communists in Korea opened an attack called the heaviest since October. Man Mountain Dean is dead at 63. It was a rainy day and we went to the Coliseum to see "Call Me Madam" with Ethel Merman, George Sanders, Donald O'Connor and Vera-Ellen - Ethel Merman as the vivacious ambassadress to Lichtenburg who falls in love with its Prime Minister and "The Silver Whip" an interesting "Western". After the movies we went to visit Sam and Molly. We had hot dogs, salami also some vegetables. Sylvia had strawberries and cream.
