10/28-11/3/51

Oct 28 Sunday One day last week Eugene went on a trip around Manhattan with his school mates. They saw many sights on a bus ride including Columbus statue, Macy's, The Empire State Bldg, the U.N. headquarters, Chinatown, etc. They visited the Statue of Liberty, Eugene climbing to the top with a friend and saw planes take off and land at LaGuardia Airport. Eugene splurged again making a record for 35¢, getting a luck charm with his name on it buying hotdogs etc. Today Sylvia and I beat Eugene and Lil at Casino then Eugene and I tied for first in Concentration.

Oct 29 Sylvia returned to school today. She got her watch at last. It is for her birthday and costs $12. with the tax. Lillian read "The Bulwark" - Dreiser, "For us the Living "The Way West" - AB Guthrie, "Red Plush" G. McCrone.

Oct 31 Ship officers started to walk out in a new maritime strike. A crisis has hit city hospitals here because of low pay.

Nov 1 Communists in Korea made their "last" concession giving more ground toward a buffer zone but the UN said it was not satisfactory. Ryan and the wildcat strikers parleyed in the dock strike.

Nov 2 Sup't of Schools Jansen backed down to allow optional wearing of dog tags for school children.

Nov 3 It rained for the third successive day, turning into the first snow of the season. Kaesong was the stumbling block to an agreement in Korea. Sol Levy, pro basketball referee was arrested for taking $2000 to help "shave" points in several games.  Post Office employees got third $400 increase plus increased sick leave and vacation.
