Mar 4 Sunday We had quite a bit of trouble with Sylvia. She is trying to defy our authority and we have to take stringent measures. She is also very slow in the morning.

Mar 5 Revolts have begun and are spreading all over French Morocco according to reports which claimed the French had shelled Fez. The basketball scandal spread to the coast.

Mar 6 Deprivation of television seems to have had an effect on Sylvia and she was dressed much faster this week. The Senate rejected amendments to the 18 yr. old draft. North Koreans were routed in the mountains. The Big Four Foreign Ministers met in a preliminary conference to work out a program for an official meeting. Sylvia got red shoes at Miles - Size 3D $4.50 Lillian bought a small oven baker $5.

Mar 7 A split developed on the agenda for the coming 'Big 4' meeting. Ivor Novello is dead at 57.

Mar 8 UN troops gained on the West-Central front in Korea while "Reds" gained in the East. Premier Ali Razmara of Iran was assassinated. The Senate voted a limit of 4000,000 men in the armed forces 49-41. The 'Big 4' wrangled about the Austrian and Trieste situation. Heavyweight 'champ' Ezzard Charles retained his title in a 15 round bout with Joe Walcott. It was a close fight. A Federal Jury brought in a verdict of guilty with mandatory death sentence for Oscar Colazzo [sic] who stormed Blair House and attempted to assassinate Truman. Lillian read "The Evening and the Morning" - Virginia Sorenson, "Two Worlds and their Ways" - I. Compton-Burnett, "The Sheltering Sky" - Paul Bowles, "China Shakes the World" Jack Belden. Lil got bed spreads for the kids' beds from Sam $4 apiece.

Mar 9 11,400 casualties were claimed on Communist troops on the Korean battlefield yesterday. The Senate voted to send troops abroad but with Congressional approval needed. The "Lonely Hearts" killers, Ray Fernandez and Martha Beck who killed lonely widows for their money went to their death in the electric chair in Sing Sing. Two youthful killers preceded them in the chair. The UnAmerican Comm. started new hearings with V.J. Jerome refusing to answer questions on constitutional grounds. Julius and Ethel Rosenberg and Morton Sobell went on trial for their lives in the country's first atom bomb spy trial. Max Elitcher, former Communist testified the defendant had asked him for gov't secrets to transmit to Russia while they were employed in Washington.

Mar 10 Sylvia drew "The Blue Fairy Book" - Andrew Lang, "Primrose Day" - Carolyn Haywood, "Azor and the Haddock" - Maude Crowley, "The House in the Woods" and other Grimm Fairy tales. Eugene drew "Ki-Yu" R. L. Haig-Brown, "Chee and his Pony" - Florence Hayes, "The Great Houdini" Williams and Epstein and "The Dodgers" John Durant. In the morning Lil and Eugene were examined by eye-doctor Fishman. Eugene got drops. They must return next week.
