Mar 11 Sunday We went over to Mom and Pop's as they are leaving for Florida next Sunday. Eugene won a chess game from me, playing very well. Lil and the kids were there but Harry had a cold.

Mar 12 Lil got a dress in Alexander's for $3. Also some more boy scout supplies for Eugene. She got Sylvia two blouses and an Easter straw hat with which she is in ecstasy. Chinese fought back desperately in Korea. The Senate was informed in a subcommittee report how the Taft-Hartley Act is destroying unions. Queuille formed a new French gov't.

Mar 13 Lillian went to the school where a Junior High School P.T.A. rep. spoke. Only 30 out of 150 eligibles made R.A. The minimum I.Q. was 130. Spanish workers made a general strike against high prices. The crime investigation circus, being televised, heard charges that Costello picked Mayors and racketeers ran the city. Dave Greenglass testified he gave the Rosenbergs and Sobell a description of the atom bomb for Russian use. Harold Bauer is dead 77.

Mar 14 Frank Costello refused to tell his net worth and faces contempt charges. Happy Chandler is out as baseball Commissioner as the Major League owners rejected him 7-9 with 12 votes necessary.

Mar 15 SoKoreans re-entered Seoul which was given up without a fight by the Northerners. Spanish authorities ordered retaliations for the first post-Franco strike. Workers will be docked for time lost and those arrested will be discharged. An earthquake terrified Northern Europe. A top O'Dwyer aide was linked to bookies in the '49 election at the televised crime investigation. The state "loyalty" bill was passed and sent to Dewey. Russia revised its proposals for the agenda for the "Big 4" meeting bringing hope of an accord. Lillian went to the Hotel Capitol by bus with other parents to hear a protest rally on the lack of new schools and low teacher pay. Members of the Boards of Ed. and Estimate were present. Sylvia got an automatic pencil from her teacher for being the best girl in class. John Bratton won the N.B.A. Welterweight champ. by outpointing Ch. Fusari.

Mar 16 The Republican dominated Legislature passed the "dictatorship Bill" - Dewey's civil defense bill which includes seizure of private property. The French Assembly approved a new election law which is aimed at the C.P. Frank Costello walked out of the crime investigation hearings claiming illness. Willy McGee received another reprieve from the chair when Justice Black ordered the stay after hearing charges that the conviction was brought about by perjured evidence and that Mississippi reserved the death sentence for rape for Negroes only. Columbia scientist William Perl was arrested and indicted for perjury in the atom bomb spy hearings. Lillian gave Sylvia a home permanent.

Mar 17 Eugene won his second straight chess game from me. The State Assembly woted to increase the sales tax from 2 to 3%. O'Dwyer's pal J.J. Moran was tied to Irv Sherman, friend of Costello and Louis Weber, numbers operator. Britain asked the U.S. to stop at the parallel and negotiate peace.
