4/1-4/7/51

April 1 Sunday We went over to Molly's for dinner. The kids played harmonicas they just got. Sam Lil and I solved crossword puzzles. We walked home.

April 2  Lil and Molly went to extend sympathy to Frieda on her father's death. John M Minton was named by Dewey as special prosecutor in the Saratoga gambling investigation.

Apr. 3 Police clashed with students in Madrid. The Senate voted a limit on troops to Europe 49-43. Mayor Impellitteri submitted the highest city budget on record - $1,336,102,798. Police Commissioner Murphy warned the cops against succumbing to Quill's unionization. .

Apr 4 The Allies eased curbs on W. German war industries. French President Auriol visiting here said Russa and the world can live in peace. U.S. troops crossed the parallel in force. Lillian went down to Macy's for material leaving lunch for the kids. They forgot their applesauce. Lil got a table top $9. in addition to dress goods.

I assume Dad meant a "tablecloth". 

April 5 Speaker Sam Rayburn broke into the U.M.T. debate to say the nation was in terrible war peril. He had just been briefed by the White House. He charged troops were massing on the Manchurian border. A witness described the 'Trenton Six' of [sic] having the appearance of being drugged when they signed murder confessions. This conflicts with police witnesses.

April 6 Our rug came today from Olson's $72. Judge Kaufman decreed death in the electric chair for Julius and Ethel Rosenberg and 30 years jail for Morton Sobell for wartime espionage. Lillian read "This is the Year" Feike Feikema "For Us the Living" H. Chevalier "Honey for the Ghost" Louis Golding.

April 7 We went to the library where Eugene drew "The Pittsburgh Pirates" - Fred Lieb "Highpockets" - JR Tunis "Snow Dog" and "Wild Trek" both by Jim Kjelgaard. Sylvia drew "Little Pear" by E.F Lattimore "Fairy Tales from Brazil" by E.S. Eells, "Molly and the Sabbath Queen" by S.R. Weilerstein and "Boom Town Boy" Lois Lenski. After the library we sat in the park on the first glorious spring day. Sylvia went to the playground and went on the swings. Trygve Lie stated there would be no third world war. Prague recalled and replaced three leading Ambassadors. Hundreds of aroused citizens packed City Hall to protest the proposed 3% sales tax under discussion in the City Council Finance Comm. Dave Greenglass, whose testimony helped doom his sister and her husband in the atom spy case received a mild sentence of 15 years in prison for his aid to the government.
