8/16

Yesterday and today are National holidays. Petain has been sentenced to death as a traitor to the Republic but is not expected to be executed. Gasoline rationing has ended. Soviet Russia and China have signed a treaty of friendship and alliance. Radar (Radio detection and range) is considered the war's greatest discovery until the atom bomb. Chiang Kai Shek after demanding that Communists refrain from disarming Japs and await his orders has asked for a conference with Mao tse tung. War is still going on in Manchuria where Japs have not yet surrendered to the Red Army. Beat Schuler.

I don't know whether it was this day, the day before, or the day before that, but I remember being at the Lawrence Farm, on a mountain (probably a small hill!) and being very frightened by sirens sounding all around. My mother explained that it was V-J Day (which was actually 8/14)
