2/5

Sylvia makes two syllables out of one-syllable words: ho-wem for "home", allow-wed for allowed. Eugene seems to have a bad 'th' as in 'wit' for 'with'. He pores over the atlas these days looking for mountains. He interrupted my shower to say "I didn't know the Allegallanies[sic] were in Oregon also". The kids make an apartment which is a replica of ours down to minute details out of their blocks and toys. The Supreme Court has refused to intervene in Yamashita's death sentence. Some 500 British brides of American soldiers have landed here. The UNO has picked Greenwich-Stamford area for a permanent home causing the usual protests from the landed gentry. Today was promotion day and Eugene will go into 1A tomorrow. Lillian went to Grand street with my sister for wool. I took the kids to the library. Eugene drew "The Indians in Winter Camp" by Therese and Edwin Deming, "Three Policemen" by W. Pene DuBois  and "Cock-a-Doodle-Doo" by Berta and Elmer Hader. Lillian finished "Being Met Together" by Vaughan Wilkins. I read "These Are The Russians" by R. Lauterbach. Also The Last Frontier - Fast - a saga of a group of Cheyenne Indians determined to leave their reservation and go home. 3500 Tug-men have struck for higher wages and better working conditions. They are affiliated with the I.L.A.
