1/13 Sunday

A son was born to Al and Edith today. Lillian read "Strong City" by Taylor Caldwell, a typically powerful "Caldwell" story with an industrial background. Einstein and Rabbi Wise have testified before the Anglo-American inquiry Commission on Palestine. Australia, Brazil, Egypt, Mexico, The Netherlands, Poland have been chosen as the temporary members together with the five permanent members to be on the Security Council. Sam Mencher, just discharged from the Army, came over and entertained us with characterizations of the French and the English. The French have a caste system in their tennis. They go in strongly for the arts. The English are more democratic in general. Judge Hastie has been appointed governor of the V.I. and R. O'Hara Lanier Minister of Liberia. Both are Negroes. Sylvia leaned on Rumpelstiltskin, breaking it.
