4/2-4/8/50

April 2 Sunday Eugene has picked up a stuffed nose and is blowing his trumpet all day long. We went to Mom and Pop's bringing a tie and flowers. Eugene got a cross word puzzle book there and Sylvia a set of dishes. At home Eugene had 100.8°. Sylvia loves the matzoth which we have now for Passover.

April 3 Eugene's nose was better today The A.D.A. finished its third convention with endorsement of Truman's '"Fair Deal". Biddle replaced Humphrey as national chairman. Dr F.O. Matthiessen committed suicide because of the world situation, at 48.

April 4 Lillian went to the Museum of Natural History along with Eugene's class and several others. His teach [sic] remarked that Eugene absorbs everything he sees or hears. Owen Lattimore's famous memo was to recommend action to drop Chiang but to win over Asia rather than have Moscow do so. Att'y Gen'l McGrath asked the Supreme Court to outlaw segregation. Kurt Weill is dead at 50.

April 5 Eugene had his hat off as the kids left for school. When Sylvia told him to put it on, he said "What's the matter. Are you my mother?" Harry Bridges was found guilty of perjury and conspiracy in denying he was a Communist at a Naturalization hearing. The N.Y. Drama Critics picked "The Member of the Wedding" as the best play of the season.

April 6 10 Catholic churchmen received prison sentences up to life terms for treason, spying and plotting revolts in Czechoslovakia. Paris police battled leftists demonstrating against publication of Skorzeny's diary. Contempt sentences against lawyers of the convicted Communists were upheld by the U.S. Court of Appeals 2-1.

April 7 Lillian went downtown with the kids to pick up my ties and got them shoes. Eugene's were brown size 4 1/2D $5. at Tom McCann's. Sylvia picked red size 2D $4 at Miles. John F. Dulles reactionary Republican was chosen adviser to Acheson by Truman. Sen McCarty's red charges are taken almost word for word from fascist Joe Kamp's writings. Senator Tydings, Chairman of the Senate investigating Comm. declared that F.B.I. records clear Lattimore of any spy charges. Lattimore told the Committee in McCarthy's presence that he was a contemptible liar. JB Thompson is head of a newly formed Mid Century Conference for Peace. 1000 teachers picketed and packed a Board of Ed. meeting considering the canceling of union recognition of the Teachers Union. Rogge received an honorary degree in Yugoslavia after conferring with Tito.

April 8 Tonight we saw a good "movie" we had missed, on television. It was "Foreign Correspondent" with Joel McCrea, Robert Benchley, Herbert Marshall, Laraine Day, Edmund Gwenn. Curranites massacred two opponents - one Charlie Keith who had distributed leaflets near the union hall. A policeman with drawn gun arrested eight hoodlums. A 'mercy killer' was found guilty of manslaughter in a rare verdict of 'guilty' in such cases. An American couple in Czecho. asked asylum there after blasting American policy. Walter Huston is dead at 66 and Nijinsky at 60.
