5/7-5/13/50

May 7 Sunday We went to Van Cortlandt park with the Cub Scouts. We took our bat and brought an indoor baseball. The cub scouts played several games with the fathers joining in some. Sylvia also participated. We took pictures then had our lunch with hot dogs on the scout pack.

May 8 Sylvia keeps asking if her face is clean. The Nat'l Lawyers Guild in its closing session asked for a fight for civil rights.

May 9 The kids love blintzes. Acheson announced in Paris we would finance and aid militarily the French struggle in Indo-China against the Viet Minh nationalists. Russia agreed to an all Berlin election if all occupation troops left. In Austrian elections, Communists poled only 5% of the vote. The Supreme Court upheld the constitutionality of the T.H. Law's non-communist affadavits [sic] 5-1. Black dissented. Draper proclaimed his strong Anti-Communism. Agnes Smedley is dead at 56.

May 10 Eugene asked for the purchase of stamps of which he and Sylvia use a great deal. Paul Draper continued to assert his Anti-Communism saying Stalin had gone out of his mind and the Russian people were enslaved. Leading Atomic scientist Dr JR Oppenheimer was called a red by Mrs Sylvia Crouch, wife of a gov't informer. 60 were arrested in the London May Day parade peace demonstration. 

May 11 40 prominent Americans asked the UN for assistance in the fight to save civil liberties in America. The State P.S.C. granted the telephone Co. increases in rates, including a 10¢ pay phone toll. Two I.W.O. leaders were seized for deportation. The Canadian Peace Congress met with 1500 delegates while 20,000 heard the Dean of Canterbury speak at an open meeting. Dominick Atteo died in agony and shock just before a rescue crew was about to free him from the bottom of a well he had set out to dig 27 hours earlier. His family was near him to the last - wife and six children.  

May 12 Egypt got a rocket factory from Germany.. U.S. is considering stocking A Bombs in West Europe. The country's biggest rail strike in four years brought unemployment to railroads and coal mines.

May 13 Eugene was the only one to get 100% in Arithmetic. Catholic Senator Chavez made a denunciatory speech against informer Budenz in the Senate. He charged him with using the Cross as a club. Dennis began serving his one year sentence for contempt. The 'Big 3' agreed to the economic and political merge linking Western Germany to Western Europe.
