6/18-6/24/50

June 18 Sunday Fathers Day Ben Hogan in a great comeback after being near death in an auto accident won the U.S. golf open. I got a sport jacket for Fathers Day - a week ago. We went to the Botanical Gardens to see the beautiful rose gardens. We came home to watch the ball game on television and eat a grand delicatessen supper while seeing the game.

June 19 The kids love meat and chicken. Sylvia especially makes a pig of herself in this respect. Sen Tydings urged direct talks between Russia and U.S. B. Macri, wanted in the killing of I.L.G.W.U. organizer Lurye, surrendered with Walter Winchell the intermediary. Western Germany is mining its roads and bridges against a Soviet attack. Pancho Segura won the Nat'l Professional Tennis Championship supplanting the Worlds #1 player Jackie Kramer. He defeated Kramer in a 5 set semi-final and Kovacs in the final when the latter defaulted with cramped legs, down two sets to one. The Indians broke a 1-inning scoring record when they made 14 in the first against the Athletics.

June 20 Encouraged by the grand jury's whitewash of the Peekskill rioters, moves are now under way to rid Westchester County of "Undesirable elements". A restrictive covenant in Brooklyn was upheld by the courts although the Supreme Court has outlawed such pacts.

June 21 Sylvia took two of the peonies Lillian bought to school to give to the teacher.

June 22 Beat Al Levitt. Sylvia made a pair of tiebacks which Lillian is using as napkin rings. The Australian Senate turned down a bill to outlaw the C.P. The U.S. Court of Appeals heard opening arguments on the convictions of the '11'. The Smith Act was called a death blow to liberty.

June 23 Beat Ann Lavender. The peacetime draft act was renewed with a segregation clause defeated. "The Nation" was banned for the third year by the "Board of Ed." for 'Anti-religious articles' and Jane Cowl is dead at 65.

June 24 Beat Duimbava [?]. At the C.P. appeal Judge Learned Hand questioned the fact that a "clear and present danger" applies at this time. Gov't attornies [sic] stated that the gov't should be able to prohibit advocacy of violent overthrow. The U. of Cal. will discharge more that a hundred employees who refused to take a non-communist oath. Sylvia has a midriff which she says covers her 'dimples'.
