7/19-7/25/53

July 19 Sunday It was a record 96° yesterday. Today we were tired of Woodlawn so we went to the Surrey to see Danny Kaye, Farley Granger and JeanMarie in "Hans Christian Anderson" and "Seminole". Last night Lil and I visited Molly as she had a severe attack and was in for the day.

July 20 Eugene and Larry went to the Fordham to see "The Beast from 20000 Fathoms" and "Kansas Pacific". Sylvia and Norma went to the summer playground. In the evening pop took the family to Lil's for Peggy's fifth birthday. Norma went along as Madeline had gone to the hospital to see Pearl. Maurice Tobin is dead at 52.

July 21 Russia resumed diplomatic ties with Israel. East Germany outlawed strikes as "fascist provocations". Jan Struther is dead at 52 and Walter Herrick at 76.

July 22 The kids are playing in the tournaments at the vacation playground - checkers, ping-pong, shuffleboard, knock-hockey, etc. I beat Jablonsky today at St James. Bishop Oxman denounced the "House" inquisition and criticized the Communists at a hearing. Russia demanded that we stop free food to East Germans.

July 23 In a torrential rain everyone was in. Sylvia played here with Norma.

July 24 Lillian read "The Caine Mutiny" H. Wouk. We both read "Dance to the Piper" Agnes DeMille's Autobiography. Eugene also read the former book.

July 25 We spent the day at St James, going home for lunch. The hot spell has broken for the second time this summer and it was glorious. I beat Mac Cohen and played with Eugene. We had sodas and then Salami and eggs for supper. Sylvia has been pestering Lillian for a bicycle. She puts on a very sad act. The Subway and city bus fare became 15¢ today. Senator Tobey is dead at 73.
