6/7-6/13/53

June 7 Sunday Eugene came home filthy as usual He had had a good time, he said. He got here about 5 o'clock. Mom, pop Rochel and Mayer came over followed by Sam and Molly. We had supper and refreshments. The kids played piano.

June 8 Eugene stayed home from school as he was all in after the Camporee. A P.O.W. agreement was signed in Korea guaranteeing no forcible repatriation. Rhee threatened to continue the fight alone. William Perl received 5 years for Espionage.

June 9 5000 longshoremen picketed in protest against the waterfront investigation of rackets. The Supreme Court ruled that Washington restaurants could not refuse to serve Negroes.

June 10 Sylvia stayed home this afternoon with a stiff neck. Tornadoes in Mass. and the Midwest killed and injhured many hundreds. South Korean deputies voted to disregard a UN truce. General elections in Italy saw the Center party coalition win 50.2% of the votes. The Left Wing slate got 34.7%. The Right Wing got 13.2%. Russia continued to make concessions in Austria. Godfrey Tearle is dead at 68.

June 11 Eugene plays tennis almost every day. Controls were eased in the German East Zone as the Communists continued their new policy.

June 12 Czech workers trampled pictures of Stalin and Gottwald and the Russian flag in protest against the recent currency reform. Einstein advised intellectuals not to testify before Congressional investigation committees.

June 13 We went to mom's for lunch. Lillian and the kids were there. Rochel and Meyer came over later. The kids played games and made up rhymes about "Grandma", Your hair is white, It must have happened during the night". "Grandma, your food is delicious, especially your ki-nishes". Peggy looked for someone to play with her as usual. Eugene won a chess game from pop while I drew with him. The Rev A.C. Powell Sr is dead at 88.
