9/21-9/27/47

9/21 Sunday Sylvia took a bath. After finishing Lillian put a towel around her head and told her to wait. When she came back, Sylvia had gone out of the bath and was drying herself of which she is very proud. Lillian went to the cemetery in the morning. After lunch we went to the zoo. I took the kids to the children's zoo as Lillian had taken them when they went to the zoo Tuesday. We punished Eugene when he manhandled Sylvia again. At home Lillian helped Eugene find birds that migrate in the Book of Knowledge for the comm. on birds of which he is the leader. Harry Carey is dead at 68.

Interesting that I'm writing this now, as Harry Carey Jr. just died a couple of weeks ago.

9/22 Lillian went down-town in the morning to get some "Ds" [?]. The rain postponed the sale of produce by farmers at the Federal Building she had intended to attend. She brought home some meat at a great saving however at a downtown market. In the afternoon we played some chess and cards. The Auto Union has opened its own groceries. Albany has banned "Deep Are The Roots".

I don't know what Mom went downtown to get.

9/23 Beat Mary Keller. The kids climbed the bars in the playground and Sylvia climbed into the swing and swung herself standing. Played a little chess at home. Lillian made roast leg of lamb, cookies, raisin cake and pickled herring. C.I.O. leaders at the N.Y. hearing of the price probe called it a fraud. Yugoslavs entered Trieste territory recently awarded it amid great disorder.

9/24 To mother's after lunch where we had supper and met Lilly U. Eugene beat pop a game and they combined to beat me. The kids got a package from Carla, including a hat and sweater for Sylvia, large 'didey' doll and books. "Freedom Train" carrying democratic American documents is exhibiting throughout the country. It is sponsored however by Wall St. bankers and neglected labor entirely. Bulgarian Petkov was hanged as a traitor despite the frenzied protests of England and the U.S.

Don't know who Lilly U. was, or Carla.

9/25 Eugene is "Superman" and Sylvia is "Wander-Woman" [sic - intended!]. They take trips to the sun and can't be killed. Took Sylvia shopping for a birthday present. After turning down two doll cradles because they weren't up to specifications she decided in favor of a doll's swing. Hans Eisler was grilled by the UNAmericans. It was revealed that many interceded for his entry here including Mrs. Roosevelt. Truman called a bi-party parley on rising prices. At the N.Y. probe a professor called for the end of the 40 hr. week amid an uproar. Left wing officers at the U.E. convention were re-elected by larger margins than ever. At night we saw "State of the Union" with Conrad Nagle [sic] at the Windsor. Light comedy on a mild political theme with the liberal Republican wing triumphing satisfyingly. Lillian is brewing a cold.

9/26 Beat Ed Wolfe. Lillian's cold is out in full force. Her nose, as usual, is badly stuffed. Her temp ranged to 101°. She went to bed about 5 P.M. The kids skated about in the park then did card tricks at home. Truman urged the people to eat less to feed Europe.

9/27 Lillian's cold was better today. She was out of bed most of the day although still uncomfortable. Tied with Sheib and beat Zinderman. Eugene skated all day, Sylvia trailing him on foot. At night the kids sold us hammers and pointers Eugene made of his tinker toy set for $1. apiece. England made its usual evasive statement on Palestine at the UN.

  1. Re 9/24: I thought at first Carla might be the newfound cousin who found you on the Net. But that cousin would be too young, I guess, to be sending dolls to a five-year-old(?) Do we know how old she is?

  2. I thought of her, too; she is a few years older than us, but that much. But I'll ask her!

  3. I meant, "not that much older".

  4. Carla tried to post this, but had some technical problem. She essentially agreed with Silvia's guess, saying "I was eleven years old in 1947. It's possible (even probable, given the rarity of the name "Carla" at that time) that my Mother, Faith, sent the package in my name."
