4/19-4/25/53

Apr 19 Sunday Eugene was much better today. Mom and pop came over and had some supper. Sylvia played "Valse" by Durand and we had some nice conversation.

Dad taped in the three box scoress scanned in below with the comment: All in the first week of the season.
Apr 20 Eugene was up and around today. The first prisoners were exchanged today - 100 Allied soldires (30 American) for 500 Communist P.O.W.'s

Apr 21 Eugene still out of school but went to Boy Scout patrol meeting. He is now patrol leader. The S.A.C.B. ordered the C.P. to register as a Soviet organ. This includes listing of members names. Cotton Tierney is dead at 58.

Apr 22 Lillian went downtown and bought Sylvia a girl scout blouse and shorts. Also some candles for mom. Returning P.O.W.'s charged hundreds of Allied soldiers died in forced marches by Communist captors. Sylvia, Susan K and Paula K went to the library. Sylvia drew "The Mitchells" H van Stockum, "The Saucepan Journey" E. Unnerstad, "The Patchwork Quilt" A. De Leeuw, ["]Willy Wong " [sic] American" V. Oakes and "The Middle Moffat" E. Estes. 12 groups were called Communist fronts and ordered to register by Att'y Gen'l Brownell. These included the I.W.O.[,] Labor Youth League, Civil Rights Congress, Nat'l Council of American Soviet Friendship.

Apr 23 The House "UnAmerican Comm" continued to hear ex-Communists some of whom reneged and testified while others refused to talk.

Apr 24 The Court of Appeals ruled that the I.W.O. should be dissolved for Communist activities.

Apr 25 Lil went to Fordham with Sylvia and got her shoes at Miles. Sylvia insisted on "loafers". She also got pants and a lightweight jacket for Eugene. A permit has been refused for the May Day parade for the first time.
