2/13-2/19/49

2/13 Sunday Eugene stayed in bed all day. His temp. did not reach 100° but he had to blow his nose continually. He amused himself by blowing his whistle and looking at the toy television. We did the diagramless puzzle and charades in the St Nich. Anthology. I played anagrams with Sylvia and lost 9-5. Lillian went to the funeral parlor to see the remains of Harry Friedland.

I see a few puzzles in the Anthology, some of which are filled in, presumably by me. But I don't see a diagramless puzzle.

2/14 Dr. Satozky came again today as he had promised on Saturday. He pronounced Eugene in good shape. Sylvia came home with a nice Valentine for Lillian. She went downstairs to play with the kids then voluntarily went into Norma's house to play. Eugene finished the diagramless puzzle (with our help). Truman and leading Washington officials snubbed the progressive "Nat'l Legislative Assembly to End Discrimination" delegates when they tried to get appointments for discussions. Gen'l Markos was relieved of his duties as military head of the Greek guerrillas and premier due to illness. Gen'l Ionnidis replaced him. Home from work

2/15 Eugene was up and around today, reading a lot of comics, playing records etc. The U.S. demanded a probe of alleged atrocities in Soviet slave labor camps at the UN. The A.F.L. had made the original charges. Anna L. Strong was accused of being a spy by the Russians and will be expelled!

2/16 Yesterday the temp. hit a high of 71°! Eugene was pushed by a boy in class and vowed to get even after school. Lillian found him rolling over the street with him. Lillian read "The Just and Unjust" by J.G. Cozzens. The U.S. Army opened a super secret trial of five suspected spies. Several former inmates of Soviet labor camps told of "horrors" there, at the UN session. A report claimed Russia ordered a purge of Protestants in Bulgaria.

2/17 Chaim Weizman took his oath as first President of Israel.

2/18 Carol was absent and the children asked Sylvia the words today. She knew them all. She was late this morning however as she dawdled. Eugene came home on a cold day so hot he wished he could take his shirt off. Attornies for C.P. leaders on trial questioned Jury clerk McKenzie for the fourth successive day on the existence of discriminatory lists. Read Mark Twain's "The Gilded Age". Fritz Kuhn was released in Germany and wishes to return here!

2/19 Sylvia has 66 stars. Judge Medina halted the quizzing of federal jury clerk McKenzie. Public housing maintenance workers started a protest action against wage freezing and cuts by the Housing Authority. Phila. transit workers rejected a 7¢ wage rise offer.
