1/4-1/10/48

1/4 Sunday Evelyn & Isabel slept over. The kids continued their cops and robbers game until they left. Played chess with Eugene. Many homes were without light or heat due to the weather conditions. 3000 Cable workers struck Intern'l T &T affiliates and W.U.

1/5 The kids are crazy about Lillian especially Sylvia. DeGaulle called for formation of Enterprise groups consisting of owners managers and workers instead of trade unions. 100 were injured including a score killed in the dynamiting of an Arab headquarters. "Marshall Plan" strings. Each country participating must pledge not to go Communist. Each country must set up a fund in its own currency equal to the relief it gets to be spent at the direction of the U.S. Agents. Countries owning assets outside the country may have to sell them to help pay off for the relief. Vitally needed war materials must be granted to the Usa. Each country must reduce its tariff barriers to permit dumping of American goods. "Plan" agents may examine all economic affairs of each country and give priority to manufacture of any commodities they choose. Each country must open its doors to private American finance. The American gov't will guarantee these investments. Pay check $206.31.

1/6 The mystery of the three missing chess-men. Today Sylvia brought in the three pieces which had been missing since Sunday evening. She insisted she had found them on the card table. No amount of cajoling could change her story. I can't see how they could have been there all this time undetected. She must have hidden them somewheres [sic]. We have lend-leased military equipment, held by the British up to now, to the Greek gov't. They have also mobilized 42,000 men. A shipment of American Marines to the Mediterranean  has caused a stir. The State C.I.O. voted against a third party. Left and right wing unions split evenly with the 'right' winning on per capita majority.

1/7 Lillian went down to "Export Shoe" yesterday and bought two pairs for herself at $2.65 and $3.35 - a big sale. Took Sylvia to the park for some sleigh riding. She enjoyed "belly wopping" down the hill as did I. Am reading "Robinson Crusoe" to Eugene at lunch time. Read "Odets" plays.

1/8 Eugene was praised for his diction in the auditorium. Sylvia admitted she found the chess pieces on the toy shelves where she probably put them. Truman asked for a $40 income tax cut for every taxpayer. He also called for universal military training and continuation of the Truman doctrine and Marshall Plan. He said he was against the Taft Hartley Bill but did not ask for its repeal or for price control. The State A.L.P. endorsed Wallace with the A.C.W. withdrawing from the organization.

1/9 Lillian went to Molly's since she has had violent pains for some time. When I set the silverware for the kids' lunch, Sylvia derided the wrong setting and had to show it to Eugene. Eugene subscribed to a Museum of Natural History bulletin. Brazilian C.P. deputies were ousted by a vote of 181-74. All C.P. office holders throughout the country will be ousted. Brazil has again initiated a dictatorship after its action against the C.P. which polled 800,000 votes in the last election. The State Comm. of Education ruled that C.P. membership is no grounds for dismissal of a teacher. Richard Tauber is dead at 56. Lillian read "You and I" by Myron Brinig.

1/10 Took the kids sleigh riding in St. James. Sylvia again bumped into a tree suffering a bruise. Eugene now listens to four programs from 5-9 daily. "Tom Mix" and "Captain Midnight" have been added. 1000 Arabs invaded Palestine from Syria. They were repulsed by the British.
