11/9-11/15/47

11/9 Sunday We all went down to St. James after lunch to feed the pigeons. The cold wind however sent us up in half an hour. Later Eugene beat me in chess. In the middle of a second game Lillian thought he felt warm and found he had 100°. He went to bed getting an aspirin, argyrol pack and enema. Later Harry & Lil called for us in his car with Sandra and Adeen amd we proceded to Mac and Anne's. There we heard a lot of records and risque jokes.

11/10 Eugene stayed home from school today and in bed although his temp was normal. Lillian called Dr. Holzman who wouldn't come over but prescribed Stoke's expectorant. Sylvia went down to the yard this morning and played with the girls. A reactionary coup overthrew the Siamese govt. Lillian read A J Cronin's "The Green Years".

11/11 Armistice Day Sylvia is still experimenting with her letters. Played two chess games with Eugene drawing one. Dr. Holzman came at 5 o'clock. He said Eugene had a virus infection of the chest. He said sulfa has no affect on this but prescribed Penicillin which works 20% of the time. It would cure Eugene within three days if it took effect, he said. Otherwise, it was a slow recovery. He ordered antiphlogistine to be applied continuously, changed every twelve hours. Three argyrol packs a day, light diet no meat, fish or eggs. Also gargling which delighted Eugene when he succeeded. Read Sylvia "The Three Little Pigs" and she retaliated with "The Three Bears". Marshall asked an immediate half million in European aid to bolster tottering gov'ts. The U.A.W. convention voted to file non-communist affidavits.

11/12 Eugene's temp normal all day today. He is still coughing but acts perfectly normal. Drew for Eugene "Banjo The Crow" by T. DuBois, Craik's "The Little Lame Prince" "My First Geography of the Americas" by A. Sondergaard and Sylvia chose "Look for the Letters" by H A Rey. She loved this book which taught her to write letters and draw at the same time. Marshall asked a rebuilt Germany as the key to European recovery. Reuther swept the U.A.W. presidency with virtually no opposition. Emil Mazey ousted Addes by almost 2-1. A third party is starting in California. Dr Maniu got life imprisonment for treason. Andre Gide has won the Nobel Prize.

11/13 Eugene normal all day. Dr. Holzman by phone ordered a return to normal diet. Still coughs a little. Sylvia insists on going down by herself. Mama over. Violent clashes including killings are taking place in Italy and France between Communists and Anti-communists. DeGaulle asked for a new Anti-Comintern to include England France and the United States. The UN OK'd a resolution similar to last year's terming Spain a Fascist state and asking a boycott by the UN. The United States dissented. Richard Gosser defeated R J Thomas by 5-2 and Livingston defeated Leonard and Tappes for Vice-Presidencies in the UAW continuing the steam-rollering of the Reuther machine! Z. Pfeiffer latest refugee from the new Eastern European Socialist states arrived here from Hungary. The Congressional "housing probe" gagged liberal and labor witnesses.
