7/14-7/20/46

7/14 Sunday Sylvia remonstrates with us a great deal to pay attention to what she says and answer her nicely. Can't you say "That's very nice, Sylvia", she will say. She is very anxious to stay up as late as Eugene. Eugene takes a shower by himself, making it easier for Lillian. Today we went to Woodlawn again, the Rosenbergs and Sam and Mollie being there. Lillian played for the first time in years. Beat Shakhet. Polish elections saw 10 million to one million OK the new Western boundaries, 7 million to 3 million for one chamber legislature and 8 million to 2 million for nationalization of industry and land reform. The "House" passed the British loan. Lillian read "The King's Passenger" by N. Schachner and "The Razor's Edge" by Maugham. Scores of S.S. men have been found guilty of killing American prisoners in the "Bulge". 43 will die, 30 got prison sentences.

He clearly means that Mom played tennis for the first time in years.

7/15  We went shopping today, buying sandals and slacks for me. Eugene drew "Our Town and City Animals" by Clark & Keelor "Red Jungle Boy" by E.K. Steen and "Shaween [sic] and the Gander" by R. Bennett. Played some chess tonight Eugene being rusty from lack of practice. Mike over in the evening. Americans have killed two Yugoslavs in a skirmish. Mikhailovitch will be shot. The NMU has urged a C.I.O. boycott of trade with Franco. Bullitt has urged atomic war against Russia following former Gov. Earle's similar provocation. Churchill called for a United Europe and Anglo-French friendship. Auto workers will halt work for one day to support OPA. Truman has criticized the new bill. Padilla has conceded Aleman's presidential victory in Mexico. Egypt has arrested 1000 workers on the eve of a general strike. Riggs defeated Budge easily in straight sets to win the Nat'l Prof. grass courts title. Lillian stayed at the Rosenberg's tonight.

I checked; the book was "Shawnee and ... "

7/16 Beat Levitt. Jewish war vets came to Washington to ask Truman to help 100,000 Jews enter Palestine. Catalanster [?] is dead at 59. Canada charged wholesale espionage by Russia in Canada with some uranium smuggled out.

Not sure who died, could not find a reference.

7/17 Beat Durst. 80,000 workers rallied for O.P.A. in Detroit.

7/18  Beat J Wasserman. Wheeler has been beaten in the primaries. Soviet Lt. Redin has been acquitted on charges of conspiracy and espionage. Five organizations: the A.L.P. State C.I.O City C.I.O. C.P.A.C and the I.C.A.S.P. have united. Lillan and the kids went to Tibbetts with Molly.

7/19 Lost to Stafberg. Buyers strikes and picketing are winning lower prices in many cases throughout the country. The Freeport probe is the object of much protest for suppression of vital evidence. Thousands are picketing Macy's. Lane Bryant's is also out now.

7/20 Sylvia wanted to know if people took their doggies home with them. Also where they slept. Eugene for the first time asked how a baby got into a "belly"? Just before, after a little fuss with Eugene, I said to him "You're a problem". He got "mad" aimed a blow at me and strode into another room saying "If you say that again I'll really hit you". Bogolometz is dead. No. 39 for Eugene - Alabama.

7/7-7/13/46

7/7 Sunday When Sunday comes around Eugene rushes for the "Worker" and "does" the puzzles. Lillian went up to Woodlawn with the kids while I had to work. 3000 survivors of 50,000 Brazilian rubber workers who produced for the war are straggling home. The Soviets have confiscated former German property in Eastern Austria. Meat and butter are up everywhere. At Wimbledon Pauline Betz defeated Louise Brough for the Womens title - straight sets. Brough teamed with Margaret Osbourne to defeat Betz and Doris Hart in three sets for the Womens doubles title. Brough teamed with Tom Brown to win the mixed doubles title in straight sets from Geoff Brown and Dot Bundy. Tom Brown and Jack Kramer won the Mens doubles in straight sets from Dinny Pails and Geoffrey Brown.

7/8 Lillian bought Sylvia a doll's house which Eugene enjoyed assembling. Mother Cabrina is the first American to be canonized. Rep May, racist and red baiter is under fire for using his influence to get war contracts for various firms. Rabbi Wise & Louis Lipsky have been refused Palestine visas.

7/9 Eugene hurt himself and while we were putting iodine on we told him to grit his teeth and bear it. "If I knew what it was, I would do it", poor Eugene said. Lost to Levy. Milk is 19¢, butter 82¢ lb.

7/10 We went to Tibbetts Brook pool today taking Bobby Rosenberg with us. The kids enjoyed the bathing very much. Sylvia wanted to dive in and while we weren't looking she sneaked over to the edge and did. She fell in the water swallowing some and cried. She wasn't so anxious after that but she does like the water as does Eugene. I lost all the kids jackets somehow in the confusion. UNRAA has claimed China is misusing relief shipments, 2% only going to the Communist area. The Senate has voted to eliminate all meat ceilings in the new OPA bill. The A.L. defeated the N.L. 12-0, Ken [sic!] Williams starring with 2 homers and 2 singles. Sarah R. stayed tonight while we went to see "The Bandit of Sherwood Park [sic]" with Cornell [sic] Wilde as the son of Robin Hood and "A Letter for Evie". Franco has murdered four more opponents.

The pool "diving" incident was a very (in)famous family story. I did not actually see it, being in a different part of the pool when she "dove", but was there for the aftermath. Perhaps Dad was shaken up by the incident (and perhaps blame for losing the jackets!); he certainly knew it was Ted Williams and Cornel (one "l") Wilde, and the movie was "The Bandit of Sherwood Forest".

7/11 The kids are making a birthday party for me at 3 o'clock and Burl Ives will be over at 4 o'clock. Sidney Hillman is dead of a heart attack at 59. The Senate has eliminated milk and dairy products from the OPA bill. Longchamps Restaurant owner Henry Lustig has been sentenced to 4 yrs imprisonment and $115,000 fine for income tax evasion. Two others received jail sentences. ILGWU business agent Sol Moss has been killed by gunmen.

7/12 Nine Polish pogrom leaders will hang for the Kielce atrocities. The woman gets ten years. UNRAA now charges Greece also is misusing relief shipments. Many are testifying to the brutal orders of the Lichfield camp commander Col Kilian at the latter's trial. The Senate retained rent control except in states which set up their own systems. Macy's drivers have struck against transfer of the firms delivery service to U.P.S. which is AFL and has less money and more hours. Most employees are respecting the picket lines, virtually closing Macy's. Gloria Singer came down to play with Eugene. At first Sylvia pouted and left the room. After some persuasion she went in to play by herself then played a little with the kids.

7/13 Beat Mencher with Sylvia playing on the sidelines with Eugene. Milton had his concluding operation. Bishop Hlond of Poland has blamed the pogroms on the presence of too many Jews in the gov't. Curran is engaged in a feud with the C.P. in the N.M.U. AFL seamen are picketing C.I.O. ships in a "retaliation" move.

6/30-7/6/46

6/30 Sunday Mom and Pop over for first time since the chicken pox. Pop played Eugene two chess games for first time and won both. I beat Pop one. We all had supper together. In the morning the kids had decided it was Lil's birthday and made a party using baskets and clay for the eats. Thousands of Hamburg Germans have demonstrated twice against requisitioning of apartments by the British. The President vetoed the OPA bill with the "House" sustaining the veto 173-142 but failing to extend the present bill temporarily. Thousands of Jews are being rounded up in Palestine. The W.F.T.U. meeting in Moscow called for a break with Franco. 600 delegates in N.Y. started a N.Y. Comm. to Win the Peace affiliated to the Nat'l Win the Peace movement.

I remember playing chess with my grandfather at our house when I was sick; I don't know if this was that time, since I am apparently recovered.

7/1 Sylvia is 3 ft. 4 1/2 in. Weighs 42 lbs. Eugene 4 ft. 1 in. Weighs 61 lbs. Beat Mencher. Played chess with Eugene. A special N.Y. State law has frozen rents with all national controls off. A six months Phelps Dodge strike in Queens has been settled with 18 1/2¢, half of it retroactive to Sept. 1. Other plants are still out. "Secret" data sought by Soviet officer Redin was known to the whole world according to defense council [sic] at Redin's espionage trial. The great Bikini Atoll atom bomb tests saw the 4th atom bomb in history exploded with a flash ten times brighter than the sun over a 73 ship "guinea pig" target. One destroyer was capsized and five set afire. Trieste riots saw Americans hurt by a hand grenade in the bitter rivalry between Yugoslav and Italian supporters. Silvia can set up the chess board and knows the names of the pieces. Lillian went to the movies seeing "Ziegfield Follies" with Judy Garland Fred Astaire and Gene Kelly and "Strange Impersonation".

7/2 The "House" passed a temporary OPA bill but O'Daniel stymied a Senate counterpart. Prices on some goods and Rents soared in scattered districts throughout the country. Final results of the atom bomb test had half the 73 ship target fleet sunk or destroyed. Some goats aboard the Pennsylvania survived as did minnow in the surrounding waters. American zone elections in Germany gave the Christian Democratic Union 2,579,403. S.D. 2,855,545. C.P. 400,000. Railway Express workers are back with discharged workers to be rehired where needed and grievances rectified. President Morris Muster has resigned his U.F.W. post in a swirl of red baiting and disruption. Trieste is to be internationalized. Polish elections were held with results later.

7/3 Beat J. Wasserman. Buyers strikes are being organized. Clint Golden and Hal Ruttenberg have resigned from the Steel Workers Union. Golden is ill and Ruttenberg enters industry. Miss. Negroes defied threats to vote in the primary but their ballots may not be counted. The Columbia Tenn trial has shifted to a different race-hate county. 20,000 rallied against the British "Labor" gov'ts terror in Palestine in Madison Sq. Park under Amer. Zionist Emerg. Council auspices. Nagler and Cellar were among the speakers. Many more of our marigold buds have blossomed at last. The other plant after many weeks is beginning to bud.

7/4 We went to Woodlawn where I beat Mencher twice. Also there the Rosenbergs and Sam and Molly. Pravda has attacked the atom bomb test, charging minimization of the damage. The Philippines officially received their independence although they are under our military and industrial control. Internationalized Trieste will be ruled by the Security Council. Truman has signed the Hobbs Bill.

7/5 Gen Clay has freed 1 million young Nazis in the American zone. Sam Snead has won the British Open golf tournament with 290. The "Big 4" has called a 21 nation peace parley for July 29. A new pogrom in Poland has caused about 50 deaths. Evictions are prevalent throughout the country. Eugene drew "The Field First Reader", "Where the Winds Never Blew" by Padraic Colum and "The Little Geography of the U.S." by Mable Pyne. Lillian read Clarence Darrow's biography by Irving Stone. I read "The Age of Jackson" by A M Schlesinger Jr. The battle was the same in those days. Steiglitz [sic] is dead.

Another strange thing; Stieglitz actually died on 7/13. It's the last item in the paragraph, and is written slightly above the lines. It is likely that he added it later, and went back one page too many.

7/6 Eugene was cranky today so that Lillian took his temp. which was 100°. His eyes seemed to bother him. We went over to Mom's. Sylvia told the story of "Henny Penny" again ending up with "The king knew the sky was falling down. He was out in the street." We saw Susan in the street waddling along here and there. At night I took a shower with Eugene and he got some argyrol in his eyes. At Grandma's Eugene played casino for the first time and liked it. Sylvia lost interest quickly. A state investigation has at last been forced of the Ferguson shootings in Freeport. Yvon Petra, France defeated Geoffrey Brown Australia in a five set match for the Wimbledon title. Bought pressure cooker $12.50.

6/23-6/29/46

6/23 Sunday Sylvia broke out more today. She had 100° this morning but 102° later. Split with Mencher. H&M tube strikers have won their 18 1/2¢. Wm. H. Davis formerly of the W.L.B. has been named a member of the Board of Transportation. Over 14000 have been recruited in the C.P. drive. OPA is still being murdered by the Senate Committee.

6/24 Sylvia's temp was 100° today. 100,000 demonstrated in Shanghai against American intervention. Allied confidential documents aired at the Belgrade trial proved Chetnik collaboration with the Fascists.

6/25 Lost to Levy. Witnesses at the trial testified that Mikhailovitch tortured partisans and collaborated with the Nazis. 2000 delegates in Washington demanding retention of OPA promised a consumers strike if OPA is scuttled.

6/26 Stayed home from work today. Eugene and I took haircuts. Von Neurath at Neuremberg testified Germany was a peace loving country hemmed in by France and Russia. He praised Hitler and admitted supporting anti-semitic measures since 1933, Bill Hart is dead at 75 or 83. Sylvia has just come in to show me the table she made out of the "erector" set. She's out of bed today for the first time. Played some chess. G. Saragat, S.P. is President of the first Italian constituent assembly since 1848. The UN Atomic Energy Comm. named a rep from each of the twelve countries on the commission to consider all the atomic plans presented. The House passed an amended OPA bill for another year 265-106, Meat dairy and poultry ceilings are retained. Subsidies, while retained are cut. Average increases in cost since Oct. '41 may be added to prices. Restaurant and hotel rates can rise sharply. Special machinery is to be set up to decontrol certain articles. Liberals as a whole are against this bill. The City Council defeated a move to oust Quill in the TWU strike threat issue. A great Staten Island ferry cosing 2 million dollars saw three killed, scores injured.

I don't get the "or 83" regarding William Hart.

6/27 Eugene went back to school today. Corrupt factory heads are being ousted in the USSR and the Crimean and Chechen Ingush Autonomous Soviet Republics have been liquidated and natives transported to other areas for mass disloyalty during the war. At the "Council" Gromyko again vetoed a weak Franco resolution. The espionage case against Soviet naval officer Redin opened with charges he tried to transmit secret information to Russia. 6/16-6/22/46

6/16 Sunday Played three chess games with Eugene, he nearly mating me in one. Beat Geller. In the evening, we saw Rosenberg's color moving pictures including the children for the last three years. The Maritime Unions have won their strike nationally through their complete unity. Vincent Auriol, Socialist is President of the new Constituent Assembly.

I don't remember seeming those movies; I'll have to find out if they still exist.

6/17 Beat Levy. Lillian read "The White Tower" by JR Ullman. Lillian bought Eugene a Morecraft (Erector) set $3.00 and Sylvia an iron, two balloons and some white shoes. Size 10 1/2E $4.74. Played chess with Eugene and he got an early lead. Lillian reads to both kids at bed-times. Fred Rose has been convicted of consipiracy to give war secrets to Soviet Agents. He is the Canadian L.P. M.P. The Tennessee grand jury found no violation of civil rights there but communist agitation! The American Veterans Comm. at its first convention elected Chas. Bolte chairman.

I remember the Erector set well; played with it for many years. I believe the motor from it is still in my garage.

6/18 Sylvia's favorite food is potatoes. When give many other foods she whines "I don't like it", but eats a good deal of it. She "plays tennis" with green peas which she dislikes very much. When Lillian talks on the phone, Sylvia gets her phone and repeats every sentence. Of course she talks on the real phone a little. Jews and Arabs are fighting the British in Palestine. At the UN Council, British Sir Cadogan asked that no action be recommended against Franco.  Chetnik aide Moleyvitch admitted massacres of Croats and collaboration with the Italians.

My memory says they called the green peas "tennis balls" in an attempt to get Sylvia to eat them.

6/19 Sylvia asked for some stars but wouldn't promise to be good. At the "Council" Gromyko vetoed the weak Franco resolution. Jews in Tel Aviv kidnapped five British officers for hostages. Hungarian Communist Deputy Rokasi jailed for 16 years is here.  The Anti-negro campaign continues with the beating of a musician. Sylvia says she's not going to get "Chicken Pops". Gromyko proposed that all atom bombs be destroyed no more be made and violators be severely punished. Bedault of the M.R.P. is Premier President of France 384-0 the C.P. abstaining. 6/9-6/15/46

6/9 Sunday Eugene has taken over our room exclusively. We sleep in the large bed in the childrens' room. His temp was a little over 100° today. Broad preparations are being made for support for the coming maritime strike, expected to be one of the greatest ever. Eugene's temperature reached a maximum of 102° today.

I do remember being in their bed during my chicken pox time. Was that to isolate me from Sylvia?

6/10 Eugene had a 100° in the morning. The rash is beginning to recede. He came close to beating me in chess today taking my queen and bishop when I overlooked the dangers. Senator Bankhead is dead. Sylvia runs to urinate every ten minutes although her urinalysis was normal. We tracked down her fears to the ten days or so she spent at Mollie's. She didn't understand the reason for our sending her away which was at the time of Eugene's pneumonia a year ago. Read "Burning Daylight". A superman gives up all his wealth when he feels it is making him soft and preventing him from winning his woman.

The chess result sounds like "good news, bad news"; I "came close", but I didn't win after taking a queen and bishop?

6/11 Several G.I. babies have died in voyages across the ocean to join their fathers. The trial of the Litchfield detention camps guards finally found several former inmates testifying after long refusals. Eugene's temp. was normal today. He amused himself playing chess. Sylvia would not go out to the tennis courts with me so we had to leave her home. She is being deprived of ice cream. Beat Schauer. Lillian saw "Behind the Green Lights" and "Sentimental Journey" with Maureen O'Hara. Italy became a Republic yesterday as monarchists rioted again causing deaths. Two Americans were accused in the theft of the $1,500,000 Hesse crown jewels. Jack Johnson died in an auto crash.

6/12 The President's veto of the vicious Case bill was sustained by the House with (5) five votes to spare. 255 to override vs. 135 for. Supreme Court Justice Jackson in Germany has blasted Justice Black in a move apparently against the liberal wing. The trial of Gen. Mikhailovitch opened with the defendant pleading "not guilty" but admitting he had signed a truce with the Germans and attacked Tito. American and British officials have been charged in the indictment with collaborating with the Chetniks against "Communism".

6/13 Mikhailovitch testified the British ordered him to liquidate the partisans. He admitted co-war with the Germans and Italians but not cooperation and blamed his staff officers for most of the betrayals. The British Labor Party barred C.P. affiliation 2,678,000 to 468,000, Bevin attributed agitation in the US for 100000 Jews to be admitted to Palestine to the desire to have less Jews in New York. He claimed more Jews in Palestine would necessitate more British soldiers there. Longshoremen routed Ryan at a meeting when they insisted they would not scab on the seamen. The Gov't, owner of most of the merchant fleet has taken over negotiations with the maritime unions from the ship magnates. The Senate dealt a blow to OPA by passing a Taft amendment changing the formula for fixing maximum prices. King Ananda Mahidol of Siam is dead of a bullet wound.

6/14 A Council meeting postponed the Franco issue to the Sept. meeting of the Gen'l Assembly. Board of Estimate passed the 2% (doubled) Sales tax. Ernie K. over before leaving for the country.

6/15 Eugene got dressed today but has to stay in the same room as yet when Sylvia is in the house. The maritime strike started at midnight. East coast shipowners came to an agreement with the unions but west coasters reneged. The new terms include $17.50 per mo. raise for seamen, 40 hr weeks plus 8 hrs at overtime rate, 40 hours wk. in port retroactively to April 1. West coast longshoremen get 22¢ per hr. raise. Baruch presented the American plan for atomic energy control to the first meeting of the UN Atomic Energy Comm. at :"Hunter". An Intern'l Atomic Authority would control all atomic development. The U.S., as each stage of intern'l control is reached pledges itself to yield an appropriate amount of control of its activities to the Authority. (The U.S. decides when and how much information is to be disclosed at each stage) When the U.S. decides an adequate system of control exists and fit punishments are established for violation of the rules it will stop manufacture and destroy the existing bombs. The Big 5 veto power is to be canceled as far as atomic energy is concerned. Mikhailovitch at his trial admitted buying arms from the Germans presumably with British money. Major Bowes is dead. Ch. Butterworth killed.

6/2-6/8/46

6/2 Sunday Eugene doesn't play the records anymore. He reads books especially the chess books, does various puzzles in the papers and still builds things with the blocks and lock-blocks. Sylvia mothers her dolls cutely. The Nat'l Negro Congress convention has sent petitions to UN Council President Lie and President Truman asking for a probe of the oppression of 13 million American Negroes. The Pope has appealed for votes against "Atheism" (liberalism) in France and Italy. Antonescu has been executed. The Senate has passed the Truman Bill with three provisions struck out. Played some chess. Sarah R. stayed while we went to see "The Lost Weekend" in which Ray Milland gives the prize winning performance as the alcoholic. The UN Council investigating committee has described the Franco gov't as a potential but not immediate menace to the peace and advocated isolation of the gov't by the UN unless the Franco regime is discarded. The case will go to the Gen'l Assembly in September.

6/3 Read "Martin Chuzzlewit" where hypocrisy meets its just deserts. The United States comes in for some strong satire of its customs through the medium of a visit to America by two characters. Italian fascists have been attacking and bombing left wing newspapers and offices.

6/4 Georgia's Governor Arnall is acting against the Klan emulating California. Kalinin is dead. The French elections to choose an new Constituent Assembly which will frame a new Constitution after the last one was defeated saw the MRP (Catholic) gain to lead the other parties with 5,401,180 votes and 163 seats. The C.P. 5,136,334 - 148 seats, S.P. 4,165,813 - 120 seats. The WFTU and two AFL Unions have pledged suport to the expected shipping strike with the Gov't recruiting finks. Murray has demanded a veto of the Case Bill. Hudson Tube strikers have the support of maintenance men at the Cortlandt St. Terminal and CIO power workers. The Supreme Court has ruled against the State segregation laws in a Virginia bus case. The Marigolds we planted have bloomed. When Sylvia is a big lady and has a real live baby, she says Dr. Rosenberg will be the father. Sylvia's name will be Auntie Lillian Rosenberg. Milk is 17¢. Butter up 11¢.

6/5 Talk of a third World War is rife with leaders of the "Big 3" making inflammatory statements. Dubinsky at the Hatters Convention called for a third party. Both kids seem to have slight colds. Peron replaced Farrell as Argentina's 28th President.

6/6 [...] [Sylvia] made a fuss over staying in the yard without me although Eugene and other children and mother were there. Eugene's eyes are much better due to the argyrol. At supper which we ate all together again, he gagged on his egg which is his most disliked food. Later we played chess. Lost to Levine. The worst Chicago hotel fire ever at the LaSalle saw 58 killed and over 200 injured. Churchill in the House of Commons praised Bevin and attacked Russia. The Italian vote saw the Monarchy defeated 12,181,858 to 10,372,709 in an almost complete summary. 85% [sic] the votes for the Constituent Assembly gave the Christian Democrats 7,598,783 S.P. 4,512,333, C.P. 4,129,222. Sen Austin will replace Stettinius, resigned as UN representative. The Senate passed an 18-45 yr draft. Lillian sat at the Rosenbergs tonight.

I'm sure that was a "coddled egg"; the thought still makes me gag.

6/7 Eugene told Lillian he had a belly-ache just before breakfast this morning. She took his temperature and found he had 102°. However after an enema it soon went down to normal and he seemed all right. Argentina and Russia have resumed diplomatic relations. Fred Vinson will be Chief Justice of the Supreme Court. John W. Snyder will replace Vinson as Sec'y of the Treasury. Bowles has termed the OPA bill reported out by the Senate Comm. a "monstrous one". A 15 day truce has been attained in the Chinese Civil War. A "Free Africa" rally at the "Garden" had 16000 listening to Robeson, Yergan, DeLacy, Ben Davis, Powell and many more. At the Packinghouse Union convention Ralph Helstein replace Lewis Clark declined as President. The latter replaced EJ Roche declined as sec'y. The Columbia Tenn trial still finds the issue Jim Crow especially in the juries there. Eugene got 103° at night and Lillian called Dr. Holzman. He told her to continue the sponging and aspirin in the absence of any rash. Gerhard Hauptmann is dead at 84.

The word "declined" doesn't seem to fit, but it's clear two times in the text.

6/8 This morning Eugene developed a rash and we called the Doctor who said it was a heavy case of chicken pox. He prescribed a week in bed, a week in the house and a week in the street. Eugene had 101° in the morning, 103° in the late afternoon and 101° at night. Eugene cried when he learned he wouldn't be able to take his "promotion test" next week. When we assured him he would be promoted anyway, he said "Well, I'll take your word for it". He was very cute and good all day. We had to get carbolated vaseline, calamine with 2% phenol and a mouth wash. We played some chess in the afternoon. Eugene was in good spirits all day. Italian Royalists rioted with four killed and many wounded in skirmishes against the police. They protested the end of the monarchy. In Cuban elections, rightists were routed, the C.P. making 50% gains. The "Klan" has flogged a Georgia Negro veteran. The "Pirates" called off their strike in the last minute.
