5/9-5/15/48

5/9 Sunday Lost to Levine. Sylvia asked Lillian if everyone would die. After Lillian evaded this Sylvia asked is she would die. Lillian said no. Sylvia later told Eugene she knew someone who wouldn't die. Eugene is very hoarse. Lillian is still suffering and I hurt my ankle at tennis. Played Eugene some chess. Clyde Miller was fired from Columbia. Lillian saw "I Stole a Million" with G. Raft and "In Old California" at the Lido.

5/10 Eugene does a lot of "reading" these days. Eugene is on the Committee studying Indian occupations. Charleston Seaman Robert New, Wallace leader was murdered by an anti-communist goon in the Union hall. The C.I.O. denounced the Mundt Bill. Botvinnik won the Worlds chess championship over Keres, Euwe, Reshevsky.

5/11 Beat Chesneau. Sylvia blew bubble on the side-lines. Eugene got 97 in multiplication and 100 in his other arithmetic tests. Truman seized the railroads and got a court order forbidding a walkout breaking the projected strike.

5/12 Sylvia still cries upon being forsaken for some time. Eugene has a cough now. 20,000 heard Wallace denounce the Mundt Bill and ask for US Russian talks. After the "Garden" meeting two thousand of the audience went to the "Music Hall" to protest the "Iron Curtain". They clashed with police and Catholic War Vets. Peace feelers for US and Russia have stirred the world. Murray assailed the third party and O'Dwyer assailed the Mundt Bill at the A.C.W. Convention. Luigi Einaudi was elected president of the Italian Republic.

5/13 Eugene stayed out of school due to his slight cold and the rain. He missed the trip to the Museum of Nat. History. Lillian tried ice bag applications for her neck. Marshall closed the door to peace talks with Russia outside the UN. The Steel and Clothing Workers Conventions attacked the Mundt Bill. Red-baiting was also heard in both. 75,000 Chrysler workers struck. 1000 protested the slaughter of Greek patriots at the consulate.

5/14 Sylvia got a present of little Golden books in each of which she printed her name. Truman announced his opposition to the Mundt Bill. The Steel Union convention saw an administration opponent mobbed as red-baiting reigned.

5/15 Eugene bounced a ball up on a roof. He wanted to recover that one but wouldn't accept another. The Jewish State of "Israel" was set up in Palestine under Prime Minister Ben Gurion with Moshe Shertok as Prime Minister [sic, actually, Foreign Minister]. The U.S. recognized the state in another surprise flip-flop. The Steel Union Convention banned Communists for any union office.

5/2-5/8/48

5/2 Sunday In the morning to the park with Sylvia Eugene still being in bed although fine. A little boy picked her up for a game of ball. In the afternoon Lillian went to the Kingsbridge to see "The Fabulous Texan" and "Where There's Life" with Bob Hope. Played games with the kids including "I doubt it" a card game. Sylvia smiled several times as she put out a card as if she was bluffing. Then she put on a poker face and bluffed. But I caught her and she was stuck with about thirty cards which she couldn't handle. Showed "Jack and the Beanstalk".

5/3 Sylvia sings "1-2-3-4, We don't want another war. 5-6-7-8 We want Wallace in '48". She picked it up at the parade. ... We went out after supper Eugene's first day out since Friday. 75000 marched in the parade. The Anti-Communist parade drew 15,000. VP Candidate Glen Taylor was roughed up and arrested when he tried to use a Jim Crow entrance to a hall in Birmingham.

5/4 We went to the circus today. Eugene got a puppet and cowboy hat. Sylvia got a sombrero and monkey on a stick. We had ice cream, cracker jacks, soda chocolate milk. We brought our lunch with us. Milk, ham and cheese sandwiches, cream cheese and jelly sandwiches. The Supreme Court ruled that neither State nor Federal Courts may enforce restrictive covenants - 6-0, Wallace defied a mob of hoodlums to speak to 5000 at Columbia, Mo. The British poured troops into Palestine.

5/5 Sylvia if she wants something will point to someplace and say "it says here that you should do so and so". Eugene has added "The Lone Ranger" to his radio programs at 7:30. He very often forgets to brush his teeth. The Greek gov't executed 154 patriots. Lillian again has a pain in her neck. Her stomach is also sore.

5/6 Lillian went to Ohrbach's. She bought a topper $14. Also stockings for mother, a blouse and nightgown for herself and a balloon for Sylvia which she greatly enjoyed. Earlier she had gone to assembly for Arbor Day with Sylvia. Eugene had made up a riddle about a flower instead of a tree so he didn't participate. Sylvia started to cry in the yard when with Lillian downtown I went for a walk. After school to the Library, where Eugene drew "The Further Adventures of Nils" by Lagerlof  "The Sky is Blue" by W.M. Reed (science) "Fairy Tales From Grandfather's Big Book" by E.L. Calisch (The Talmud). Sylvia chose "Stories About Henry" by J.S. Tippett. Wallace was threatened by Mundt for attacking the Mundt Bill. More Greeks were executed in retaliation for the assassination of Justice Minister Ladas. 3rd Ave. Transit workers got 24¢ per hour raise averting a strike. Judge Goldsborough issued an injunction against the deportation hearings on the grounds that the Administrative Procedure Act requiring prosecuting inspectors to be chosen by rotation had been violated. Marshall admitted Nations implore the US not to precipitate war, in testifying against revision of the UN Charter. Dalton Trumbo #2 was convicted of contempt of the UnAmerican Comm. Sen Taylor was sentenced to 180 days in jail - suspended and $50. fine.

5/7 Sylvia came up crying from Norma's yesterday. Today she wouldn't go down there but played with Norma here. We couldn't pry the reason out of her. Eugene didn't call Lillian this morning until 8 O'clock although the alarm rang at 7:30. Coming home for lunch he forgot his rubbers. 44 more were executed in Greece. Korean rightists made an agreement with the Communists, praising the Soviet occupation and attacking the US. Read Bernard Smith's anthology "The Democratic Spirit". Lillian's cheek and neck were better and then suddenly much worse. She suffered all evening.

5/8 To Mother's for "Mothers Day" as she has a wedding tomorrow. Harry Lil & Susan over also. We gave them stockings handkerchiefs and lilacs. Mama gave me a shirt for my birthday. Eugene and I beat Pop at chess. Furriers ended their strike with concessions. Lillian was still troubled with her ailment and used a heating lamp.

Although Dad didn't say anything about them (even on "tomorrow", the actual Mother's Day), the following cards were taped in the diary here; the tape had dried out, and they actually fell out when I turned the page, so I felt free to scan both inside and outside. First my card, outside and inside, then Silvia's card, outside and inside; hers is much larger.

4/25-5/1/48

4/25 Sunday We spent several hours in the playground. Isabel got into two quarrels on the big swings but hung on to hers doggedly. At home we all played "hide the hat". In the afternoon the kids went to the aqueduct with Lil & Ev. They got pops and a merry-go-round. At home we had an ice cream brick. Sylvia was rather hoarse today.

4/26 Sylvia sneezed and coughed this morning. In the park she amused a man giving her didy doll water and having her 'make'. Russia joined the UN Trusteeship Council after a year's boycott. Irgun attacked the port of Jaffa. Italian police fired on 20,000 left-wing demonstrators. Lillian read "101 Years Entertainment" (Great Detective Stories 1840-1941) edited by Ellery Queen

4/27 Sylvia in bed today with a stuffed nose. No temp. Eugene has a "Knox" Cap for $1. at Alexander's. 15 Negro leaders called to a conference by Forrestal were told by Army Sec'y Royall that segregation would stay and that it was not necessarily discriminatory. 10,000 per [pier?] workers struck. Sen. Ferguson called for prosecution of 64 top C.P. leaders. The UN voted to send an American British and French police force. The Arab states plan to invade Palestine with armies.

4/28 Sylvia walked around today. Her cold is in the coming out stage. Eugene still reads the comic books.

4/29 Sylvia will not stay put in her room drawing or playing a game, as a rule. She must be flitting around listening to everything we say, asking questions making a nuisance of herself. The British attacked Irgun forces at Jaffa. PM was sold to Crum and J Barnes. Fields retains a small interest. Many professors are being persecuted for supporting Wallace. J.W. Knudsen is dead at 69.

4/30 Took the kids to the park where I played some practice tennis with Milt Pikulin. Eugene found a squirrel's home on a branch of a tree. He also punched Sylvia for which he had to sit down for the rest of our stay in the park. Eugene tonight vomited twice. felt nauseous, had a temp of 102-101-104°. He complained of a pain in his neck.

5/1 My 40th birthday Lillian called Dr. Holzman but Dr. Glassman came in his absence. He said it was inflammation of a gland, not the mumps. He prescribed an ice collar to his neck twenty minutes off and twenty on. Eugene's temp was below 100 all day. He seemed fine although we thought it might be the mumps when we heard Arnold P. had just gotten it. Mom Pop Sylvia and I went down to see the parade. We stood for four hours, mama being especially tired. Much fruit and vegetables were thrown at the marchers. At home, Lillian had made a birthday cake for me with five candles. For presents I got a shirt from the kids and bedroom slippers from Lillian. The kids made me birthday cards which follow [see scanned-in page]. Started 9 days vacation.

Twelve Colombian C.P. leaders were released when no proof was found of their responsibility for recent riots. Jews and Arabs are in a bitter struggle for Jerusalem.

4/18-4/24/48

4/18 Sunday Eugene complained of a stiff neck this morning. After lunch we visited the Popes in Bklyn. Danny is adorable, bright-eyed and energetic. We brought two racing autos on a track. He kept examining the tunnel on the track to ascertain why the autos stopped there. Eugene had an advantage on Al in a chess game but lost the end game. I split games with Al. At home Eugene had 102°. He got an aspirin, some oil of wintergreen and gargled. The curb strike ended with a 10% raise. Vincent J Kane [?] died at 52.

4/19 Eugene in bed all day, but normal. His fever yesterday was evidently due to constipation. Lillian showed the kids "Jack and the Beanstalk" with the new projector I got. 27 million Italians voted yesterday and today in a vital election. Arabs claim Soviet officers are leading Jewish armies. Several thousand heard Paul Robeson in his defying a University ban.

4/20 Eugene's temp reached 100° when he left the bed so he stayed in again today. He has a slightly sore throat. He built a giant airplane swing. Paul Ross assistant to Mayor O'Dwyer resigned in protest over the Mayor's fare rise stand. Wallace denounced the Police state bill soon to be introduced. JH Lawson first Hollywood figure to be tried by a Federal Court was found guilty of contempt of Congress. No other issue was allowed to be injected into the case except the one as to whether Lawson refused to answer the question "Are you or have you ever been a member of the C.P." Lewis and the UMW were found guilty of civil and criminal contempt for the recent walkout.

4/21 Sylvia met an old friend of hers in the playground today, named Harriet. They romped for a while, going on the see-saw. Eugene was better but stayed home to have his eyes examined at Columbia U. Lillian also had her eyes checked because of a last minute cancellation. Neither needed new lenses but they recommended new lenses for reading for Lillian. Sylvia refused a couple of invitations to have drinks with the doctors. O'Dwyer announced his decision to raise the subway fare to 10¢ and buses 7¢ bypassing a referendum and 300000 petitions against a rise. The Italian election results were approximately - Christian Democrats 48% Popular Front 31¢ [sic] in the greatest campaign of intervention from outside a country against a party. U.S. proposed a trusteeship over Palestine with provision for police forces. Lewis was fined $20,000 and the union $1,400,000  for criminal contempt. Miners are again walking out in protest. 200,000 attended Gaitan's funeral. Quill resigned from the A.L.P. with a red-baiting blast. A N.Y. C.P. meeting was attacked. Yonkers "Worker" canvassers were arrested and Detroit newsstands were raided for "red" literature. Walter Reuther was gravely wounded by an unknown assailant.

4/22 Eugene wanted to leave a few minutes earlier after lunch so he could speak to another boy about a Passover play they're supposed to write. Lillian went down to Irving Rosenberg about an inverted toe nail which had been paining her. He fixed it up for her. Our project X in Italy cost us $4000,000 it is disclosed.

4/23 Lillian had to go over to Molly's early to prepare the meal for tonight as Molly did not feel well. After school Lillian came home to dress the kids. Then I stopped over at Mom's with the kids while Lillian went directly to Molly's. Later at Molly's with Sam, Mike Evelyn & Isabel & Milton, Shirley and Mrs. Perl [?] we had a delicious supper. The kids played an exciting game of jet planes and shooting. We got home at the unusually late hour of 10:15 with the games. Detroit police picked up left-wing Ford union leaders in the Reuther shooting. Jews captured Haifa when the British evacuated it forcing an Arab surrender after killing a hundred in a terrific battle. The Steel Trust plans to cut prices and refuse wage raises. 800 Communists were jailed in Brazil. A five week revolution in Costa Rica ended in victory for General Figueres who will form a military junta to take over the gov't on May 8 re-write the constitution and call for national elections. The Chinese Communists regained Yenan.

4/24 Eugene drew "New Stories To Tell To Children" by S.C. Bryant (Mrs. Borst) Creswick's "Robin Hood" "Wonderful Adventures of Nils" by Lagerlof. When Sylvia saw the beautiful illustrations in "In Henry's Backyard" by Weltfish and Benedict she drew it rather than the story of an Eskimo boy she had intended to take. The former book is based on the pamphlet "Races of Mankind". At five o'clock Evelyn and Isabel who had slept over at Molly's came here. The kids played games, I joining with them in "hide and seek". Isabel intends to marry Eugene! The kids went up to the Singers to see their new television set. Soon Sylvia came down in tears with no explanation. She clings to Isabel. Ford trade union leader Nelson Davis is being held in suspicion in the Reuther case in an apparent frame-up. He is an admitted Communist. Cops clubbed striking packing workers on the picket line and in their union hall to break up mass picketing and allow scabs to return to work.

4/11-4/17/48

4/11 Sunday Sylvia out of bed today and romping with Eugene. After Sunday School they played "hide the pencil". After lunch Eugene heard "The Odyssey" on "Tell It Again" which he knew very well. Then they went down to the Wasserbergers to see "moving pictures". Upstairs again they played "hide the gun". Played some chess with Eugene. Reading to Sylvia in bed I discovered her lip and tongue covered with crayon colors. She puts things in her mouth unconsciously. Lillian has been bothered with pain in the glands of her neck for several days. She read Kurt Reiss [sic] "High Stakes" and Taylor Caldwell's "Final Hour".

4/12 The Eastern Regional NAACP criticized Eisenhower's Jim Crow attitude. The Int'l Conference to Aid Democratic Greece opened in Paris with delegates from 23 countries. Wallace addresses 21000 at the Chicago "Nat'l Wallace for Pres. Comm. Conference. Fascists got leading posts in the Greek Confederation of Labor. The C.I.A.L [?] Congress in Mexico City attacked the Marshall Plan. Lillian went to Dr. Holzman about her pains in the neck and cheek. He said it was a neuritis or neuralgia due to a draft or caused by her teeth. He prescribed at ointment and an xray by a dentist. Jock Sutherland is dead of a brain tumor at 59.

4/13 Lillian went to Dr. Robbins for her xray. I colored pictures with Sylvia and read from Robinson Crusoe to Eugene. Columbia broke relations with Russia claiming Communist origin of the revolt! Two Russian agents were among fifteen arrested "in the act" it was claimed. Liberal leaders have been taken into the gov't. Several hundred have been killed as the fighting and looting continues. Forrestal asserted Russia has the know how but not the industrial capacity to build the atom bomb. Coal miners won a $100 monthly pension for those who reach 62 with 20 years service who retired after May 28 1946. Lewis sent the miners back to work but will still face contempt of court charges. 17 Senators asked a revision of the UN Charter to bar the veto on aggression or armaments. Veteran stormtroopers broke up a Rochester C.P. meeting slugging speakers and burning literature. Arabs and Jews have taken turns in capturing strategic hill of Kastel for two weeks in their full fledged war. Mom Pop Lil & Susan over.

4/14 Sylvia must have someone to play with. Eugene can amuse himself very well. The propaganda battle for Italy has been going full blast for weeks. Millions of letters have been sent from here telling the Italians to vote for "democracy" and denouncing Russian interference! Quill again attacked Saul Mills' "doubletalk"! He demanded an immediate fare raise! threatening a transit tie up otherwise. A Jewish state was proclaimed in Palestine to go into effect May 16. A Federal Court tribunal upheld the Constitutionality of the non-Communist provision of the Taft-Hartley law 2-1.

4/15 Lillian's xray showed a complete negative. All she needed was a cleaning. So her pain is due to a cold. It is gradually clearing up. After school we went to the Windsor to see "On a Wing and a Prayer" with Don Ameche and Dana Andrews. Fighting the Japs from an aircraft carrier. Also "The Big Sleep" with Lauren Bacall and Humphrey Bogart. An involved plot with about five killings. Eugene enjoyed both features. Sylvia improved, showing an interest for half an hour. From then on she wanted to go home, becoming more and more anguished towards the end. 30000 heard Carey, Leon Henderson, Rabbi Silver, Celler denounce the Zion sell out at the Y. Stadium. A quarter million workers stopped work. Councilman Connolly and two others were barred from entering Italy. Read "American Vaudeville" by Douglas Gilbert.

4/16 Took Sylvia down finally with her baby to the playground where she romped all over. Sylvia was assigned to a class and room when she starts school in September. Eugene showed interest in her room number. O'Dwyer met with 47 right wing AFL & CIO leaders including Quill & Curran on the fare question. Thousands of delegates from progressive organizations invaded Wash D.C. on the Palestine betrayal. Robert Magidoff, U.S. correspondent in Moscow was ordered out for spying. The French C.P. demanded inclusion in a new Coalition gov't. Constance Drexel another American who had broadcast for Hitler was freed. Transport workers voted to strike bus lines for wages raises and better pensions. Philippine President Manuel Roxas died of a heart attack at 56.

4/17 Eugene drew "Millet Tilled the Soil" by Deucher and Wheeler "Tartan Tales" from Lang, "Printer's Devil" by Adam Allen. Sylvia chose "A Summer Day With Ted & Nina" by M. DeAngeli. Sylvia can toy with her milk interminably but when I count seven or ten she finishes it at once.

4/4-4/10/48

4/4 Sunday We all attended the N.F.P.O.C. annual installation at Manhattan Center. Guest speakers were Rep. Klein and Sen. Langer. Entertainment were the Dennis Sisters, Paul Benson, the auctioneer who was a riot with his takeoffs on radio shows giving participants free gifts. Little Larry Roberts sang several songs. Refreshments consisted of hot dogs and beer. The kids had 1 1/2 each and like them. Afterwards we walked to Times Square spending a half hour in a penny arcade. Then in a book store Sylvia insisted on our buying "Training Pants" for her. Her persistence won out.

4/5 Sylvia has a slight cold and is in bed today with slightly over 100°. ...  Eugene is anxious for the fight between Patoruzu and Gorilla to start.Thousands of Jewish War Vets marched in protest against our Palestine policy. Tens of thousands assembled in Madison Square Park for speeches. Italian troops marched to intimidate "peoples front" supporters.

4/6 Sylvia's temp went up to 100.8 last night and this morning but was 100° at noon. She got aspirin and argyrol drops. She played with cut outs and balloons in bed. Even the police are handing out letters to be sent to Italy against "Communism". Gromyko boycotted the Security Council meeting which heard the US plan for a trusteeship over Palestine plus loopholes for US British and French troops to get into Palestine to "keep order". Krupp and his associates were cleared by an American military tribunal. Read Hawthorne's "The Scarlet Letter".

4/7 Sylvia's temp went up to 103 last night. Lillian called Dr. Holzman who came this morning. He said Sylvia had an infected ear and called her a little actress for not admitting her pain. She got sulfa drops for her ear. Also some medicine and privine. Her temp was 100 1/2 going up to 101 1/2 later in the day. She was playful most of the day. Eugene's report card was perfect again except an "improving" in penmanship. Mrs. Ingram's sentence was commuted to life imprisonment. Eisenhower's condonement of military Jim Crow has caused resentment in Negro ranks. The Council on African Affairs is politically split with Max Yergan leading the anti-left fight. Seven thousand furriers were locked out. Bus lines cut their runs laying off veterans and causing a stoppage. Auto manufacturer Paul Hoffman will direct the E.R.P.

4/8 Sylvia better this morning. Her temp 99.5. Hoodlums attacked a Wallace meeting in Evansville Ind. slugging C.B. Baldwin and two other aides. Hotel reservations were cancelled. MacArthur's bubble was burst in his first test in Wisconsin where Stassen routed him. Isaacson was again denied a passport to Paris.

4/10 Sylvia getting very restless in bed. Herb Pachmann took Arnold and Eugene to see the "Army Day" parade. A leftist revolt in Columbia set off by the assassination of the Liberal leader Dr. J. E. Gaitan threatens to end the Inter-American Conference being held in Bogota. An Indiana professor was dismissed for being a "Wallace" leader. The UnAmerican Comm. proposed legislation to make the C.P. an illegal conspiracy with its leaders subject to jail.

3/28-4/3/48

3/28 Sunday Eugene and Sylvia have been collaborating on secret messages. Eugene has a ruler in front of him which contains an important message invisible to the naked eye. The handle of the skipping rope alongside the ruler is a power light illuminating the message. A spool which Eugene peers through is a powerful telescope which enables him to read the message. He then spells out words for Sylvia to write. The messages concern "All the crooks, robbers and thieves in the world". Sylvia today rebelled in the middle of the message. She wanted to look into the telescope. We were supposed to visit Al today but Danny got a sudden high temp. so we went to the Educational Alliance on E. Bdway instead. We saw two pictures - 10¢ for children 12¢ for adults. The sound was very noisy. The first picture "The Cummington Story" about refugees settling in a small town was very indistinct but "Pecks Bady [sic] Boy" with Jackie Cooper, Jackie Searles [sic] and Thomas Meighan made in 1934 was much better.

3/29 Eugene drew "The Jack Tales" edited by R. Chase and including Jack and the Bean Tree "Peter Duck" by A. Ransome, "Twenty-Four Unusual Stories" retold by A.C. Tyler and for Sylvia "Cock-A-Doodle-Doo" by B & E. Hader. She played in the yard rather than go to the library. Eugene made a merry-go-round which he had failed to do previously. Arabs wiped out a 42 man Jewish food convoy. Elsewhere 150 more were spared when they surrendered their arms. Quill resigned his City C.I.O. Council presidency with anomalous statements of differences. He claims he does not wish to be caught in a fight between the Nat'l and City C.I.O. The Wallace for President Comm. started an "Enlist for Peace" month.

3/30 The kids played in the yard this morning. Stayed home from work today and we went to the zoo. Sylvia had her pony ride which she had looked forward to all afternoon. We saw some striking colorful penguins and visited the house of small mammals. We ate candy and popcorn and took pictures. At home played Eugene a chess game and taught Sylvia a little. Sadie and her sister Betty dropped in an night. We partook of frankfurters, baked beans and homemade french frieds. Fascists captured the Greek Labor Congress as Murray hailed the Greek gov't and labor movement for its democracy and freedom. The T.W.U. will remain in the City C.I.O. A.F.L. office workers struck wall street. J L Lewis boycotted the Gov'ts fact finding board in the Coal stoppage.

3/31 Arnold called for Eugene and they went off to the Aqueduct where they played with the rubber hoop together with several others. Sylvia played in the yard. Right after lunch Eugene left to meet Arnold. Cops clubbed Wall St. strikers and their seamen supporters who had formed a human barricade in front of the Stock Exchange. The House voted to include Franco in E.R.P. 149-52.

4/1 We all went to Mother's for lunch on Susan's birthday. Sylvia and Eugene Susan amused themselves by saying "I'm chair years old" "I'm sofa years old" "I'm bed years old" etc. Later they paraded carrying brushes and hand mirrors. Eugene wrote me a message in mirror writing. An Ohio C.P. leaders home was wrecked by a mob of several hundred while he and his family were away. Wallace demanded an end to our intervention in the Italian election. He was picketed and booed by war vets. A P Randolph and Grant Reynolds asserted they would advise Negros and whites to refuse to defy the draft unless segregation and Jim Crow were abolished. The Philipps [sic] Oilers defeated Kentucky U 53-49 to win the Nat'l basketball title. Outstanding were Kurland - 20 points and Beard 23 points. The House passed the 6 billion dollar E.R.P. with Franco aid retained 329-74. Cable workers ended their 3 month strike without an agreement.

Obviously Dad meant to write either "refuse" or "defy", but what he actually wrote is the opposite of what he meant.

4/2 The party continued. Present were Mom, Lilly & Susan and family, Rachel, a friend of Lil's Gertie and her two kids. Blume Ann and Barbara came later. Mom gave Sylvia Lil's old dancing costume. We gave Susan a pretty red suit and white blouse. ---. The kids made Easter baskets. Mike Evelyn and Isabel came over for a delicious lunch of roast beef and trimmings. I had to leave for work early. Magil got his Palestine passport in a reversal. Russia ordered all U.S. and British trains passing through its sector in Berlin to be inspected, suspecting transfer of machinery and stores from Berlin to Bizonia. Green opposed U.M.T. but weakened on Selective Service in "House" hearings. The C.I.O. opposed both at present.

4/3 Yesterday the kids got a gun and a junior doctor's kit. Lillian gave Evelyn several doilies. This morning Eugene worked on the weekly P.M. chess problems. Sylvia playing with the pieces knocked the crosses off the kings. Eisenhower, subject of the Truman shelvers for the presidential nomination, endorse U.M.T. the draft and condoned Jim Crow in the Army. Congress over-rode Truman's veto of the big 6 billion dollar income tax cut overwhelmingly. The reduction favors the rich. A Welfare Dept red hunt started. Another Italian union leader was assassinated. Rep. Isaacson was denied a passport to attend a Paris conference to aid Greek democracy. India started a red-hunt. Egon Irwin Kisch is dead.

3/21-3/27/48

3/21 Sunday Mom and Pop, Lilly Harry and Susan over for the afternoon and supper. Susan says her daddy's car is the best in the world. When I asked her which is the worst, she snapped back "Have you got a car". Eugene asked some riddles. Sylvia and Susan romped all over the house. Talbert won the Nat'l Indoors over Sid Schwartz in four sets. Kentucky beat Holy Cross in the NCAA Eastern Regional 60-52.

3/22 Joyce G. tenth birthday and the kids and mothers were invited to the luncheonette for sodas and ice cream. Sylvia looked forward to it with great excitement but Eugene and I went to the library. He drew "Paul Bunyan" by Esther Shephard, "The White Duckling" and other Russian folk tales translated by N.H. Dole "Science Experiences with Home Equipment" by C.J. Lynde. For Sylvia we got "The Little Gray Goose" by F. LeFevre. Palestine Jews warned they will never give up their Jewish state. U.S. Britian and France asked for Trieste's return to Italy. This is an attempt to sway the April Italian elections our way. Italians here are also writing to Italy to ask support of the de Gasperi gov't there! The Vatican is also making a tremendous effort to defeat the popular front.

3/23 Sylvia moped around all morning fanning me to a fury once or twice by her actions. Eugene is trying to cancel out his charges before repord [sic] card time. Tito offered to exchange Trieste for Gorizia. Commercial printers walked out against a lengthening of the work week from 36 1/4 to 40 hours. The Palestine reversal has caused great anti-Truman activity and protests. The Security Council took up the Czech question, past and present Czech delegates attending.

3/24 A houseful of kids played school here yesterday. Eugene was Secretary and Sylvia - paper monitor. Truman invoked the T.H. act against the miners. Palestine Jews will proclaim a Jewish state on May 16. The Joint chiefs of staff asked 10 billion more for the military budget. A.B. Magil was barred from Palestine and the UN "Press Freedom" conference.

3/25 Eugene started his Easter vacation today. In the morning he went shopping with Lil to help her carry packages while Sylvia played in the yard. Hundreds of Brooklynites failed to see Truman but spoke to Congressmen in Washington on the Palestine crisis. Eisler received a 1-3 year sentence. A campaign to aid Mrs. Ingram sentenced to death in Georgia for a slaying she committed in self defense is growing.

3/26 Last night with Lillian tired, the kids undressed for bed by themselves and Eugene read to Sylvia. This morning Eugene decided to play with the blocks for a change. The kids then made houses and played 'make believe' like old times. A new red scare was started with the sighting of "enemy submarines". Truman claimed he ditched partition to avoid bloodshed. Lil took the kids to the "University" where they saw "The Vigilante's Return" and "See My Lawyer". Also four cartoons which the kids enjoyed.

3/27 We attended Lewis Wasserberger's first birthday party. Pictures were taken and shown. Joyce and Norma G. Arnold & Dolly P. Arline D. were there from the neighborhood. After the party the kids played "throw the rubber hoop" in front of the house. Arnold, Eugene, Mimi [?] and Arline against Gloria, Vivian, Joyce & Sylvia. At night we went to the dance and entertainment of our Yivo [?] lodge at the Sholem Aleichem Auditorium. We met the Biders, Rosens, Greenfields and Arthur Cohens.

3/14-3/20/48

3/14 Sunday Discovered a Sunday School test of Eugene's marked 98% - Best Paper. [see scanned in page] Lost a chess game to him and played him a scoreless tie in the football game. We went down intending to visit the Cloisters and take pictures but found it too cold so took a short walk. Both kids got dimes for comic books. At night Molly and Sam over with Barbara to meet Joe Roos. We played records and the scissors game. Had coffee and lemon meringue pie and whipped jello.

For some reason, my paper was actually pasted in a couple of pages later.

3/15 To the Windsor to see "Jack London" with Michael O'Shea and Susan Hayward and "The War of the Wildcats" with John Wayne and Martha Scott. Sylvia, as usual paid no attention to the show. The 16 E.R.P. nations open a conference in Paris tomorrow. A Nat'l Security Council has been set up with James Forrestal Sec'y of Defense as head. Other leaders of our drive to war are Sec'y of Commerce Harriman, Undersec'y of State Lovett and Admiral Leahy. 75000 women marched for peace in Rome under Communist auspices. They presented 2000000 signatures to be sent to the UN. Lillian read "The Bright Promise" by R. Sherman and we both read Ilona Ralf Sues "Sharks Skins and Millets" [actually, "Shark's Fins and Millet"] - telling of the corruption in Nationalist China and reform in Yenan.

3/16 Sylvia likes to hide in the kitchen, as I watch. Then I call out various places some comical as "in the refrigerator" until I call out the place she is in. Eugene was a monitor in his last year teacher's class Mrs. Dwyer. 200000 miners stopped work for a $100 monthly pension. The Supreme Court ruled the Taft Hartley ban on union political expenditures unconstitutional. Truman invoked the Taft Hartley bill to avert a meat strike. The first two sentences would seem to make sense only if "he" is replaced by "I" in the second sentence.

3/18 After school Eugene is supposed to join a boy's club in the school building. Sylvia asked if she had spoiled my "blazor" after fooling around with my razor. Truman demanded that Congress enact U.M.T. and the selective service draft. He asked for force to back up the new 16 nation Western Bloc against the Soviet Bloc. The Arabian-American Oil Co. gave the Arabian minister in the US $100,000, V.P. Duse of the Oil Co. admitted. The UN Council voted 9-2 to hear charges of Soviet interference in Czecho.

3/19 Eugene couldn't contact the club yesterday. Sylvia got a new straw hat. She insisted on trying on all the hats before a mirror. She also tried to wheedle a pair of shoes. Wallace answered Truman calling for universal peace, fight the draft and U.M.T. curb monopoly, support the UN. A vet has been living at the Waldorf all week in protest against lack of housing. He intends to bill the city for hotel charges. The US Court of Appeals upheld the UnAmerican Committees right to question concerning political beliefs 2-1. St. Louis U. won the Nat'l Invitation basketball tourney over N.Y.U. 65-52. Irene Joliot-Curie here to speak for the J.A.F.R.C. was released for 15 days after detention at Ellis Island.

3/7-3/13/48

3/7 Sunday We attended Molly & Sam's 25th anniversary party today. There was turkey, tongue, knishes, Lilly's potato salad, cole slaw, a great big cake. Eugene Sylvia Isabel and Ronny Bickoff ran wild. The men played cards while the women chatted. Lost a chess game to Milt. Eugene stood on a chair and read the telegrams & cards.

Sounds like something I should remember, but I don't.

3/8 Eugene passed a hearing test in school. Sylvia played London Bridge in the yard with two kids. The hunger strikers were released on bail pending a hearing on a writ of habeas corpus. Ross Lockridge, author of the recent best seller "Raintree Country" committed suicide at 33.

3/9 Sylvia was delighted when I swung her doll in a swing alongside hers in the playground. Eugene often asks about something and when explained to says "I thought so". G. Eisler made a surprise appearance on the UN radio. The Supreme Court ruled religious teaching in public schools unconstitutional 8-1. Truman and MacArthur announced they will run if nominated. 3/12 Sylvia when told that after Eugene's school lay Walton High School then Hunter College said "Then you get married". Eugene is still a sloppy eater. 25000 marched in support of Palestine in a left wing sponsored parade. Truman stated we are against Communists in any gov't in the world. He also denied a charge he had made anti semitic statements. The Jewish Agency was bombed in Palestine causing 100 casualties. Reggie Weir became the first Negro ever accepted in a U.S.L.T.A. tournament when he entered the National Indoors.

3/13 When Eugene refused to see-saw with Sylvia she asked a little seven year old girl who went on with her while her friend and Eugene fooled around the other see-saws. When Eugene did everything but sit on the see-saws the little girl guessed he was "nervous" about it. She also wished her "darn mother would take me to the zoo sometimes" but she feels three children gives her enough to do. Lillian was due to take the kids to the zoo this afternoon which she did. Wallace attacked Truman's demand for exclusion of Communists from all gov'ts as a bar to free elections. A G.O.P. bill to allow a fare raise was passed by the state legislature as O'Dwyer simultaneously stated the five cent fare would remain. The C.I.O. demanded all state and city councils follow national policy on Wallace and the E.R.P.  At the zoo the kids got some small fish at 5¢ each to throw to the seals. Sylvia went on the pony ride - not Eugene.

2/29-3/6/48

2/29 Sunday Lillian stayed out of bed, but didn't feel well. She had pains in her neck and throat again. She used cold compresses and finally sloan's liniment. Francs [France's? Franco's?] ships here are loading tanks secretly. 1500 vets from all orgs. met in Washington to demand housing. 28 British soldiers were killed in a Palestine train wreck and many wounded. A great Jerusalem blast killed about 50 and wounded 100. Jews blaming it on the British killed about ten British soldiers in retaliation. Third party groups are being started in many states. Czech labor called a stoppage for nationalization and against reactionaries.

He got five charges for fighting in the "gym". Went to Dr. Robbins today for my xray results. 6 2-surface fillings - $30. 1 simple filling - porcelain $5 Prophylaxis $5 xray - $5. Conference on Civil Liberties gagged most of the opposition. Implementation of the Presdident's Civil rights program was announced as the sole business. ...

2/25 Sylvia has hidden Eugene's "gun", a branch they found in the street. Eugene is determined to find it. Our UN delegate Austin asked for further study on Palestine. He called the partition not binding and said the UN could act further only if a threat to the peace is found. Wallace testified against the E.R.P. as a threat to peace before the "House" Comm. Radio and movies were banned for his testimony. The Czech gov't took stringent steps against a suspected National Socialist plot. 2/15-2/21/48

2/15 Sunday We visited the Navarich's today. Lillian gave Milly a doily she made. We also brought some glaced fruits. Milly gave Lil some lovely lace. We had a nice meal staying till 8:45. Sandy wanted to play with Sylvia Eugene only, almost ignoring Sylvia who felt very badly. We both lost a game to Hy, Eugene, however having him on the run before suffering a mate due to carelessness.

2/16 Sylvia and Norma are always going off in bedrooms and corners and telling each other secrets. Played Eugene two chess games and the new foot-ball game. Ham Fish praised him later for his anti-communist record. M. K. Harb [?] asked for aid to Franco. Longo won his 5 year fight against the Hague machine. Eisenhower's retirement speech as Chief of staff asked for a US militaristic policy and warned all "enemies" to stay away from the Mediterranean. Eisler & Williamson were denied bail by Judge Conger.

It looks like "Sylvia is making paper chains", but I'm wondering if it was "paper chairs"; in January, she was making "paper chairs and cradles" (clearly "chairs", that time).

2/19 Went to Dr. Robbins on University Ave through the "Fed." dental plan. He gave me a complete x-ray check-up. A half million signed petitions in California to put Wallace on the ballot. These kinds of things always interest me; Mordecai (Three Finger) Brown actually died on the fourteenth. This entry (2/9) is at the top of a right hand page; the entry for 2/14 is at the top of the following right hand page. My guess is that Dad went back to add this and turned to the wrong page; there was room on the last line of the entry to squeeze it in. He then later realized it was the wrong day, and crossed it off. There was not room on the last line of the 2/14 entry, so I guess he decided not to try and squeeze it in there.

Gogs and Pogs Siggles and Biggles [???] I am reading him in "All About Us". The C.I.O. Exec Board voted 33-11 against a third party. The State Dept. released secret Nazi  documents concerning the Nazi Soviet pact.

1/24 Eugene and Gloria played with the erector set, modeling set and checkers game after the morning radio programs. Sylvia hung around more or less. The City Council held a stirring open hearing on the question of seating Gerson to replace the late Pete Cacchionne. So far Gerson has been denied his seat on the question of whether the C.P. is a political party. The C.I.O. approved the Marshall Plan, left wingers again dissenting. Cuban M.P. Union and C.P. leader Jesus Menendez was killed by a Rural Guardsman.

1/11-1/17/48

1/11 Sunday Walked to Mother's, Eugene enjoying it because there was snow on the side to walk on. Eugene won a game from Pop while I played Pop one.

1/12 Eugene is on the snow removal committee. Sylvia is delighted when I make her a star. Strikes are breaking out again in Italy. The UNCop [?] is meeting on the situation there.

1/13 Eugene was picked by his teacher as a 'smart boy' to help Ass't Principal Mrs. Chaffee. Sylvia wrote on the chair which Lillian had just recovered with new leatherette. Russia has suggested there is no room in Berlin for those who support partition of Germany. The Supreme Court ordered Oklahoma to admit a Negro girl to its law school. We both read "Curtain Going Up" by G. Malvern. The story of Katherine Cornell's stage career. Mikhoels is dead.

1/14 Went to Dr. Holzman. Weight - 130 3/4. Last Jan 14, when I saw him it was 133. My blood pressure is low. Normal - 130. last year - 126. Today 114. Blood count 85 - very good. Everything else including stomach - O.K. He advised care in my personal hygiene for my fissure. Prescribed some exercise in the winter as well as the summer for my low blood pressure. Also "improved vitakaps" a vitamin to help the fissure and my condition. After lunch to the library with Eugene while Sylvia played with Norma and Arline D. Eugene drew "All About Us" by E K Evans. This was written to give children facts about human beings which would forestall prejudices. "Stories of the Gods & Heroes" by Sally Benson "As the Goose Flies" by K. Pyle. For Sylvia we took "The Little Red Lighthouse and the Great Gray Bridge". At night we went to the Windsor, seeing "Western Union" with Randolph Scott, Robert Young,                    and "Alexander's Ragtime Band" with Tyrone Power, Alice Faye, Don Ameche. We enjoyed both.

Looks like he left space for a third actor name in "Western Union".

1/15 Eugene is delayed on his way home for lunch as he likes to walk on the snow. When I told Sylvia to stay out of the kitchen while we ate lunch because we wanted our privacy she said "Okay, did you give me my privacy when I ate lunch". The F.B.I. jailed five implicated in the shipping of dynamite for the Jews defense against the Arabs.

1/4-1/10/48

1/4 Sunday Evelyn & Isabel slept over. The kids continued their cops and robbers game until they left. Played chess with Eugene. Many homes were without light or heat due to the weather conditions. 3000 Cable workers struck Intern'l T &T affiliates and W.U.

1/5 The kids are crazy about Lillian especially Sylvia. DeGaulle called for formation of Enterprise groups consisting of owners managers and workers instead of trade unions. 100 were injured including a score killed in the dynamiting of an Arab headquarters. "Marshall Plan" strings. Each country participating must pledge not to go Communist. Each country must set up a fund in its own currency equal to the relief it gets to be spent at the direction of the U.S. Agents. Countries owning assets outside the country may have to sell them to help pay off for the relief. Vitally needed war materials must be granted to the Usa. Each country must reduce its tariff barriers to permit dumping of American goods. "Plan" agents may examine all economic affairs of each country and give priority to manufacture of any commodities they choose. Each country must open its doors to private American finance. The American gov't will guarantee these investments. Pay check $206.31.

1/6 The mystery of the three missing chess-men. Today Sylvia brought in the three pieces which had been missing since Sunday evening. She insisted she had found them on the card table. No amount of cajoling could change her story. I can't see how they could have been there all this time undetected. She must have hidden them somewheres [sic]. We have lend-leased military equipment, held by the British up to now, to the Greek gov't. They have also mobilized 42,000 men. A shipment of American Marines to the Mediterranean  has caused a stir. The State C.I.O. voted against a third party. Left and right wing unions split evenly with the 'right' winning on per capita majority.

1/7 Lillian went down to "Export Shoe" yesterday and bought two pairs for herself at $2.65 and $3.35 - a big sale. Took Sylvia to the park for some sleigh riding. She enjoyed "belly wopping" down the hill as did I. Am reading "Robinson Crusoe" to Eugene at lunch time. Read "Odets" plays.

1/8 Eugene was praised for his diction in the auditorium. Sylvia admitted she found the chess pieces on the toy shelves where she probably put them. Truman asked for a $40 income tax cut for every taxpayer. He also called for universal military training and continuation of the Truman doctrine and Marshall Plan. He said he was against the Taft Hartley Bill but did not ask for its repeal or for price control. The State A.L.P. endorsed Wallace with the A.C.W. withdrawing from the organization.

1/9 Lillian went to Molly's since she has had violent pains for some time. When I set the silverware for the kids' lunch, Sylvia derided the wrong setting and had to show it to Eugene. Eugene subscribed to a Museum of Natural History bulletin. Brazilian C.P. deputies were ousted by a vote of 181-74. All C.P. office holders throughout the country will be ousted. Brazil has again initiated a dictatorship after its action against the C.P. which polled 800,000 votes in the last election. The State Comm. of Education ruled that C.P. membership is no grounds for dismissal of a teacher. Richard Tauber is dead at 56. Lillian read "You and I" by Myron Brinig.

1/10 Took the kids sleigh riding in St. James. Sylvia again bumped into a tree suffering a bruise. Eugene now listens to four programs from 5-9 daily. "Tom Mix" and "Captain Midnight" have been added. 1000 Arabs invaded Palestine from Syria. They were repulsed by the British.

12/28/47-1/3/48

12/28 Sunday We went to the DeLuxe Theater in the East Bronx to see Disney's "Fun and Fancy Free" with Charlie McCarthy, Mickey Mouse, Donald Duck, etc. Also "The Spirit of West Point" the story of Army football greats Davis and Blanchard. Returning home we had quite an experience. Subway service was still delayed. We waited about twenty minutes on a bitterly cold open air platform then barely managed to squeeze into the 3rd Ave El that came along. Crowds at every station shoved and shouted like mad. The trip took us 1 1/2 hours.

12/29 Home from work due to an upset stomach. Lillian went to a half empty Alexanders and got long socks and a pair of pants for Eugene, a hat for Sylvia, gloves for herself and a sweater for me. The kids asked riddles of each other. Some questions (they were holding books from which they got hints) were "Is a wolf very nasty? Is a mouse the smallest creature? Does a dog have a lot of fur? What animal sleeps standing up? Is a crow easily fooled? Six kids played here this afternoon. Vivian S. was the teacher with pupils Gloria S., Joyce & Norma G. and Sylvia & Eugene. Played Eugene a chess game tonight. Auto Union and Negro leaders asked Wallace to run. The Greek C.P. and EAM were outlawed. Even sympathizers are subject to heavy penalties. Former King Victor Emmanuel of Italy is dead at 78.

12/30 Eugene drew "Tall Timber Tales" (Paul Bunyan) by D J McCormick "Stories From the Americas" collected by F. Henius "Dash & Dart" by M & C Buff - a story of two fawns. Sylvia drew "Down-Along Apple Market Street" by M. B. Hill. Wallace announced on a coast to coast broadcast that he would run as an independent candidate for President in 1948. Truman signed the Republican anti-inflation bill although he termed it woefully inadequate.

12/31 The kids drew pictures this morning. Wallace's program 1. Re-establishment of another UNRAA 2. Administration by the UN. 3. Priority to of relief to nations that suffered most from Axis aggression. 4. The fund to be used for peace only 5. Four power control of the Ruhr. King Michael abdicated the Romanian throne. "Gentlemen's Agreement" won the NY Film Critics award for 1947. 51 died in Palestine's bloodiest day.

1/1/48 New Years Day Sylvia had supper in Norma's house yesterday. No sooner had she closed the door upon her return then she made a wry face and complained of a stomach ache. She relieved herself soon however. Eugene went to play in Arnold P's house. Arnold recently had a successful operation at Johns Hopkins for his heart by Dr. Blalock. Today we failed to go to Anne's for Tante Blume's party due to my stomach upset and the bad weather. Lost a chess game to Eugene. A fierce battle is raging at Konitza between the Greek factions.

1/2 Molly over with the turkey for the shower. Train wrecks, tornadoes and sheets of ice ushered in the New Year. Electric wires are down throughout the City. The British seized two ships with 10000 Jews attempting to reach Palestine. Michigan won the Rose Bowl game over So. Calif. 49-0. The "Freedom Train" stopped at all Southern Cities but Memphis and Birmingham which insisted on segregation.

1/3 Today we had the shower for Shirley. It was a lovely affair with about 25 people. Molly & Milton, Evelyn & Isabel, Thelma, Shirley, her mother, four cousins, two friends, Kate Belop [?] and Abe, Katherine Falk, Ellie & Herb Friedland, Ray Cherniak, Frieda Kamen,

We had turkey, tongue, potato salad, cole slaw, cranberry sauce, soda, coffee and cake. Evelyn baked some wonderful cookies and a cake. The kids ran wild, "murdering" people all over the place and robbing banks. Eugene slammed a door on Sylvia, cutting her scalp rather badly. It was quite a surprise to Shirley  and she got some lovely presents. Milton took pictures. Won a chess game from him.

We threw out the kiddy car we bought Sylvia for her second birthday.

The first paragraph really did end with a comma; presumably Dad was planning to add other names later. The last group of names, except for Frieda Kamen, are not known to me, although some sound familiar.

All of them. What shoe is put on last? The one that's left. Sylvia knows them also. Molly was over yesterday to write the invitations for Shirley's shower. 12/24 DEAR MOTHER AND FATHER I LOVE YOU VERY MUCH SYLVIA. I am now in 3A. My teacher is Mrs. Gerhold. I am the leader of group 1 in Arithmetic. Eugene [see scanned-in page] Lillian got the kids a "speedway" sled - $4.50, After lunch we went "belly-flopping" as Sylvia called it. The kids went down together and once I went down on top of them. Last night Norma G. had supper with Sylvia here which delighted them both no end. More Greek Anti-fascists were executed. UN correspondents for a Greek and Indian Communist paper were released by protests of UN Sec'y Gen'l Lee and others after a brief detention at Ellis Island. They had been legally accredited to the UN. Lillian read "Cass Timberlane

After he started that last, he probably remembered that he'd already covered that and crossed it out.  And he apparently let both Silvia and myself write in the diary, this time.

12/25 Christmas We went to Lillian's for a party. Mom, Pop, the Beckers, Edelsteins there. We gave Barbara "Bozo the Clown" and Susan a broom set and pull toy, also candy. Sylvia got pyjamas and a handkerchief set and Eugene shirt and tie. Sister Lillian didn't feel well due to her condition putting a damper on the party. Panama Assembly voted unanimously to refuse bases to us and we will withdraw all our garrisons. Greek guerrillas in the mountains announced the formation of a free gov't under Markos Vafiades. Students fought back against their persecuters [sic] with the formation of the Intercollegiate Academic Freedom Comm. The kids got their Christmas presents from the Kreislers. Sylvia got a plastic garden set and Eugene a beautiful "Tom Sawyer" later exchanged for "Robinson Crusoe" [the last phrase was added in between the lines]. We got Barracini's chocolates. Lillian read"B.F.'s Daughter" by J. P. Marquand M. Berger's "Eight Million" and Best Amer. Short Stories of '46 edited by M. Foley.

12/26 The kids went up to the Singers and got some knick-knacks then all four played here. More than a score of Arabs and Jews were killed in Christmas fighting in Palestine. 500 were rounded up and jailed in Athens as Communist sympathizers.

12/27 The kids had a snowball fight in the yard. The greatest snow storm in New York's history started Friday morning about 5 AM and ended Saturday morning about 2 AM. The total fall about 26 (25.8) [this latter number was inserted in black ink above the 26] inches topped '88's 20.9 inches  All traffic was halted as cars trucks and busses were stuck throughout the streets. Lillian went down 7:30 AM to get milk being sold from wagons in the street. She got three quarts at a grocery at the regular price but paid 25¢ a quart at a Sheffield truck and was asked 50¢ a quart at an independent truck which she of course turned down. She accumulated seven quarts of milk.
[newspaper clipping inserted here; see scanned-in page]
Bobby Riggs defeated Jackie Kramer before 15,000 in the Garden 6-2, 10-8, 4-6, 6-2 to retain his professional hegemony. The record gate was $56,730. (5 hrs. with pay)
[see second scanned-in page with pictures of the snow]

I remember walking with Dad, after the storm, on the sidewalk on Kingsbridge Road, near Aqueduct Ave., between what seemed like two walls of snow, which I could see over the top of, but not by much!

12/14-12/20/47

12/14 Sunday Lillian took the kids to the Sunday school for a Chanukah party. Some of the children put on a little ceremony and there were two movies, one about the circus and the other a Dr. Christian picture which Eugene liked very much. Had an advantage of Queen two rooks and a bishop against a Queen and rook on Eugene when he mated me!

12/15 We played the Burl Ives records yesterday and Eugene remembered many of the words. We bought the records when he was four when he used to play and sing them over and over again. Sylvia has been very miserable. We finally got her to bed at 2 o'clock. Russia announced a re-valuation of its currency, abolishing rationing and lowering bread and cereals 12% and many items including shoes and clothing 75%. The object is to head of [sic] inflation and penalize hoarders and speculators. Cash in circulation will be exchanged at 10 old rubles for one new one. The first 3000 rubles of bank savings will be exchanged one for one but additional rubles up to 10000 will be at two new for three old ones. At more than 10,000 exchange will be at 1 for 2. Earl Baldwin died at 80.

I did love the Burl Ives songs; Dad wrote out all the words to help me sing them.

12/16 Sylvia better but still in bed. The kids have been making paper chains to decorate their beds. The Foreign Ministers Council ended in failure, on Marshall's motion. The main hitch was Molotov's demand for 10 billion dollars reparations from Germany. A. Johnson C.P. will speak at Columbia. Lillian enjoyed Lewis' "Cass Timberlane". We both read Ella Winter's "I Saw the Russian People". Truman's Comm. on Higher Education denounced segregation, free education through the first two years of college, subsidies to students, new colleges. We pulled our last troops out of Italy and Russia hers out of Bulgaria at the deadline.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics announced an average family of four would need about $3400 per year to get by. This is an increase of $500 in a year. The P.C.A. Exec Comm. voted to ask Wallace to run for the Presidency on a third ticket. Whitney, Walsh and Deutsch, Liebling Kingdon and Crum have resigned being against a third party now. G. Eisler has been touring the colleges speaking to many students with a few disturbances. 4 hrs. O.T. Pay 133.17.

12/18 Lillian went to school this morning to see a show the children put on. They had Christmas Cards Jingle bells and portrayed Christmas and Chanukah presents. Eugene was an aeroplane. 4 hr. O.T.

12/19 45 Union leaders asked Wallace to run. America evacuated Hungary. 4 hrs. O.T.

It seems likely to me that the shortness of the last few entries are due to all the overtime he's working, which was commonplace for postal workers as Christmas approached.

12/20 The U.S. will set up an Economic Cooperation Administration to supervise the Marshall Plan in Europe. a MP[?] rep. to the 16 nations and a network of Economic officials in the various embassies. Quill was elected city C.I.O. head to replace Curran, resigned. A N.J. delegation asked Wallace to run. Jouhaux and a majority of the C.G.L. leaders have taken their followers (about 25%) out of the Confederation. They have organized the "Force Ouvriere" as an Anti-Communist movement. 12 hrs. all O.T.

This is Saturday, and he's working 12 hours.

12/7-12/13/47

12/7 Sunday After lunch for a window shopping walk to Fordham which Eugene enjoyed very much. At night Sylvia put on an apron which reached to her toes and helped Lillian beautifully. Then she ate her supper without a hitch. The kids always lick their saucers of apple-sauce clean. Played some chess and studied Sylvia as usual playing with the surplus pieces. Nicholas Murray Butler is dead at 85.

12/8 Eugene's mind is full of the comic book characters - Superman, Captain Marvel, The Green Lantern and dozens of others. Most of them turn invincible when they say some special word. Sylvia is overdoing "Good-bye folks" which she picked up from Lillian. Greece has ordered a maximum penalty of death for strikes. 50,000 partisans paraded in Rome while French trade union leaders failed to come to an agreement with the Labor Minister on an increase.

I guess Dad had heard "SHAZAM" from me.

12/9 Eugene is slightly hoarse and Sylvia has a slight cough. The Foreign Ministers at London agreed to discuss Soviet British and French proposals on Germany. Finnish elections resulted in a rightward swing. Left wingers in the N.J. State C.I.O. walked out of the convention when they were refused adequate representation. Tank-led Army troops battled French coal miners. The Paris transport strike failed to come off.

12/10 When Eugene comes home from school at noon he reads the comics in P.M. and the D.W. before washing. Sylvia objects to wearing Eugene's old legging set because it makes her look like a boy. French strikes were called off after a Gov't ultimatum with only a cost of living bonus gained. City College banned a C.P. speaker. Leon Josephson's conviction was upheld by the U.S. Court of Appeals 2-1. The Haganah killed 70 Arabs. 750 visited Washington for rent and price controls and housing. Russia broke off trade talks with France and expelled a French Repatriation mission in reprisal for similar acts by France.

12/11 Sylvia helped clear a park path of snow this morning. Eugene misses "The Nebbs" in the D.W. which have jumped the paper in the hysteria. The "House" voted to bar aid to Communist countries. Lillian went down to the Union Square Optometrists where Eugene got an examination and new lenses $1.50 & $3.25. He has progressive myopia.

My progressive myopia finally stopped after my cataract operations a few years ago.

12/12 Sylvia's belly hurts her after every meal. Eugene made a waste paper basket in school. A half million started a general strike in Rome for a public works program to alleviate unemployment among other grievances. Police and troops attacked them. Hunter suspended student members from the student-faculty comm. as three other city colleges banned Howard Fast. A course on the Soviet Union was stricken off the Teachers curriculum. The Supreme Court voided a death sentence passed on a Mississippi Negro on the basis that Negroes had been barred from the jury. The "House" voted $590,000,000 to China, France, Italy, Austria. 11/30-12/6/47

11/30 Sunday The General Assembly passed the historic resolution to partition Palestine into a Jewish and Arab state by a vote of 33-13 barely reaching the required 2/3 vote. It is operative as of Oct. 1,1948. Mom and Pop over for dinner. Mom has high blood pressure and must go on a diet to lose 20 lbs. Pop has been troubled much by his palpitation. Frieda K. came over later. Eugene beat Pop and I beat both of them. Ring Lardner has been fired by 20th Century - Fox - #3.

12/1 Lillian went to Alexanders for the regular Monday Sale and got me two sanforized shirts at $2. apiece - a real bargain. Eugene is quite enthusiastic about King Arthur and his knights. I drew for Eugene Pyle's "Story of Sir Launcelot and his Companions" "The Snow Baby" by J. D. Peary "Shadow Castle" by M. Cockrell and Sylvia chose "The Little Fisherman" by M. W. Brown because it had such "lovely pictures". Attempts were made to sieze [sic] special editions of "L'Humanité" & "Ce Soir" in France. Amid great celebrations in Palestine Arabs attacked and killed a dozen Jews. William Edlen is dead at 69 and Ernst Lubitsch at 55. Gen'l LeClarc was killed at 45.

12/2 Eugene wants nickels in his bank as well as pennies so he asked Lillian for a nickel each time he dries the dishes. His request for another nickel for putting the dishes away was turned down however. Sylvia cut her hair slightly again. Gov't troops fought strike pickets on French coal mines fields. Communists sat down in the Chamber against Schuman's drastic anti-labor measures. All other parties supported the gov't. The Senate passed the interim aid bill for Europe 83-6. The UnAmerican Committee again whitewashed American Fascism.

12/3 Sylvia is saving for a tin doll's house and Eugene for an erector set. He wants the $25 set! The C.I.O. will seek a third round of raises to meet the H.C.L. More Jews were killed and a million dollars worth of damages done in Jerusalem by Arab rioters. Police and Mobile guards acted as strike-breakers throughout France. The World Socialist Conference voted to accept the German S.D. party but will not re-form the Socialist Intern'l.

12/4 Sylvia wanders around downstairs now with little Joycie. Eugene has been playing with Gloria in her house. J F Dulles will go to France to speak with DeGaulle. Palestine fighting between Arabs and Jews caused many deaths and injuries. Schuman's strike-breaking program was passed in France only the C.P. dissenting. Nos. 4 and 5 Dalton Trumbo and Lester Cole were fired by M.G.M. The other five cited by Congress are not under contract.

He wrote "Joycie", but Joyce, our downstairs neighbor, was (is) older than I am. He probably meant to write her sister, Norma, who was younger than Silvia.

12/5 Our tenth anniversary. We had the first snow of the season which turned to an all day rain. Sylvia is playing with Norma and Eugene with Gloria. Molly called up to say that Milton would marry Shirley next month. Strikers were killed by French troops. There are rumors of a panic in Russia. Howard Fast was barred from speaking at Columbia. Russia at the UN fought for consideration of the NAACP petition to redress grievances against the Negro people but was defeated 11-1. The Justice Dept. issued its list of 78 "subversive" organizations including the C.P., I.W.O., left wing organizations and schools. Of the rightist orgs. named the only active ones are the Klan and Columbians. Eugene and Gloria made swords and guns out of the tinkertoys, duelling [sic] with the swords then hiding behind fallen chairs to shoot at each other with their guns. Played Eugene some chess. At night we hit broadway skipping "Gentlemen's Agreement" because of its price $2.40, seeing "Body and Soul" at $1.80 with John Garfield, Lilli Palmer and Canada Lee. It was a fine film showing the sordidness of the fight game. Lee was portrayed as a Negro boxer who is thrown on the ash heap as soon as his usefulness is over.

12/6 We had lunch at a 59st. Automat - Beef stews, dessert, milk, coffee, pie at $2.15. Then to the St. Nick. Arena for the Amer. Jewish Labor Council bazaar. We saw Bujeno's [?] puppets do "The Three Bears". Bought a game for the kids. Also a fox fur collar for Lillian at $12. At home played some chess while Sylvia painted with the new paints she got. Then a beautiful garbage pail and some cups and saucers came which Mother had sent. Heavyweight champ Joe Louis an 8-1 favorite won a split decision over Joe Walcott after being knocked down twice. The crowd booed the decision in the surprise bout. O'Dwyer broadcast his appeal for an 8¢ fare which he wants to put over without a referendum. Strikers fought police and troops in seven French cities. The W.F.T.U. failed to approve American delegate Carey's appeal to support the Marshall Plan. Lillian read "Give Us Our Dream" by A. Goertz and Kyle Criston's [sic] "The Proud People" which she liked.
