Jan 13 Sunday Eugene and his Boy Scout Patrol went off to
Tibbett's this morning for an "outing". They took sandwiches bat ball
and carfare for the bus. Teddy Kass Paul Kapelow and
accompanied Eugene. They got home about 5:30 all tired out. Evelyn
and Isabel came over also Sam and Molly. I had to work today however.
Dad left space apparently for a third name on our "outing".
Jan 14 Lil
went downtown to look at some sofa beds then got Eugene a coat at
Lane's for $8. She had returned the other one to Alexander's. She also
got a jumper dress for Sylvia $2.
Jan 15 Eugene's
rash has mostly cleared up. He has been getting a salve and omitting
eggs, chocolate, citrus fruits. Leftists made great gains in India
elections. All 36 aboard a plane that crashed into the East River were
rescued. Joe Louis was barred from a golf tournament sponsored by the
P.G.A.
Jan 16 South Pacific fired Roger Rico for
his poor English. He had supported Josephine Baker. Frank Costello was
free of his contempt of Congress charge as the jury was unable to reach a
verdict. A NoKorean prison camp was bombed by U.S. planes but the UN
claimed it had not been plainly marked.
Jan 17 Lillian
went down to see a sofa bed at Castro and bought some drugs at Macy
[sic]. The Stuyvesant Town evictions of the 19 families that had fought
"Jim Crow" were postponed after great protest and pressure by many
organizations.
Jan 18 Several hundred thousand
welcomed skipper Henrik Carlsen as he returned to his home land.
Churchill, speaking before Congress placed Britain behind the U.S.
policies in Asia and Europe. We both read "Bowery to Bellevue" - Dr
Emily D. Barringer and "A Dreamer's Journey" - Prof. Morris R. Cohen.
Jan 19 Mom
and pop and Lil & Harry and the kids came over although I had to
work. I got a sport shirt for Chanakah and Eugene got $10 for his
birthday. We gave Eugene a watch and a book.
