4/24-4/30/49

4/24 Sunday We went out to Lil Altschuler's for dinner to see Sam who was in from Washington where he works as a geologist. Sam Mike, Sam & Molly. Lil's cousin Vera, Harold & Thelma & Mr. & Mrs. Siegel. We played some open poker and listened to some music. The kids drew, read and played with the ping pong set they got from Lil.

4/25 Sylvia had to be awakened at 8:15 this morning. She had gone to sleep about 9:15 last night as we got home late from Lil's. Eugene sent away to the Book of Kn. for some information on railroads. Chinese Communists have trapped 300,000 gov't soldiers on their drive to Shanghai. A British Embassy official in Moscow, A R Johnston has renounced his country due to its imperialist drive and will remain in Russia.

4/26 Sylvia remained out of school and in bed today with a cough and 99.8°. Her nose seems all right. Eugene got a pair of union hardware skates yesterday $2.98 for which he is paying out of his allowance. Chinese Communist soldiers were charged with breaking into the home of U.S. envoy J. L. Stuart and 'molesting' him. The U.N. adopted a resolution that Russia violates the charter by refusing Russian wives of foreigners to leave the country. Russia offered to end the blockade if a meeting of the four foreign ministers were arranged. Blair Gunther former American Slav Congress local leader called the organization a "fifth column" at a UNAmerican Comm hearing. Another undercover agent testified against the C.P. at the trial as Medina took a five minute recess under heckling by the defendants.

4/27 Sylvia is still in bed although her temp. is normal. She has an occasional cough and she is rather hoarse. Chiang emerged from retirement to state that the Communists victory would mean a World War III.

4/28 Sylvia was out of bed today but Lil called up Dr. Holzman who told her to give Sylvia an argyrol pack tonight and bring her to the office tomorrow as it sounded like sinus trouble to him. The F.B.I. claimed to have found many secret papers in Judith Coplon's handbag and a memo which referred to various radical personalities like Martens Poyntz Silvermaster Lore. Miss Coplon's defence rests on claims that she was about to write a book and that she intended to marry Gubitchev. Judge Medina denounced the conduct of the defendants in the trial of the '12'. Clark published a list of further Communist and fascist "subversive" organizations making a total of 159.

4/29 Lil took Sylvia to Dr. Holzman who said she had a bad sinus condition. Her temp was 101°. He prescribed sulfa, argyrol drops, privine. He said her tonsils were bad and would have to be removed. Bandits slew twelve Philippine notables including the widow of the first president Mrs. Aurora Quezon and her daughter and son-in-law. Huk guerrillas are suspected.

4/30 Eugene went to bed about 6 o'clock with a headache and 101°. His temp. went down with aspirin. There is mumps in the house which he has not had. It may be his sinus again. Both kids were in bed. Sylvia is better but is hoarse and has a loose cough. John Santo has won the right to leave the country voluntarily. Wallace is touring the country with the Italian left wing Socialist Sen. Giua and English Laborite M.P. Hutchinson. Konny Zilliakis was refused a visa. The statesmen are on a peace tour.

4/17-4/23/49

4/17 Sunday Lil's temp was under 100° today. Her neck muscles or glands were stiff today. She was in bed most of the time. Eugene heard Huck Finn on the "University Theatre of the Air" which he enjoyed very much. When I do the 'diagramless' with Eugene, Sylvia is right there putting in every word we put in on her diagram. Mom and Pop came over. We both read Katherine Cornell's Autobiography. Lillian read Sholem Aleichem's Short Stories & "A House Divided" - B.A. [sic] Wells [?]

4/18 Lillian was much better today. She was in bed part of the time. Sylvia insisted I play Casino with her tonight and beat me 6-5, Columbia scientists have isolated a virus, which they believe to be the cause of cancer, in research with mice. Home from work. 

4/19 Lillian was up and around today. At the trial in Greece of the murder of American newspaperman George Polk, Gregory Stochto-Poulos charged Communists trapped him into playing a part in the murder. Sen Mundt asked that no Americans be allowed to participate in the Paris "World Peace Conference".

4/20 It's Easter week. The kids played with the blocks this morning. Sylvia cried when Eugene wouldn't share the canoe and she couldn't find her jeep. Another ex-red, W. O. Nowell, Collaborator of G L K Smith testified party members were ordered to make charts of defence plants in 1939. Nanking rejected Communist peace ultimatum. Rabbi Wise is dead at 75. City College students called off their strike, since their protest against discrimination had been publicized.

4/21 Lil and the kids went over to Lillian's today. There they also saw Blume and Anne & Ida. The Rev John Howard Melish' ouster as church rector was upheld by the Bkly'n Supreme Court. A new hormone has been discovered which gives relief in rheumatoid arthritis. Joliet-Curie opened the Paris "World Congress of Peace" with an attack against American imperialism. Americans who participated included Rogge, Fast & Robeson. A subsidiary Congress was held in Prague for overflow delegates and those who had failed to get visas. An Anti-Communist Congress is being organized by Hook. Chinese Communists shelled several British boats on the Yangtze. The latter returned fire and many were killed and injured on both sides. Thousands of Chines Communist troops crossed the Yangtze after the gov't failed to agree to an ultimatum.

4/22 Eugene went to the Dellwood Dairy at Yonkers where he saw milk bottles being capped. The tour was through the school. The kids played here with Betty-Ann and Norma. John Garris Metropolitan Opera tenor was slain on a southern tour. G. Stachtopoulus got "life" in the Polk killing. Two communists received death sentences in absentia. Sec'y of the Army Royall resigned.

4/23 We went to the "Paradise" to see "Three Godfathers" with John Wayne, Pedro Armendariz and Harry Carey Jr. Sylvia had some interest in seeing the baby which is entrusted to the three cowboys. Also "Act of Violence" with Van Heflin & Robert Ryan. Truman called for a national compulsory Medical aid plan. At the trial of the '12' more former 'party' members and undercover agents testified the Communists here planned to synchronize revolutionary action with a Russian invasion through Alaska. Nanking was evacuated by the Chinese gov't. The last of the Nazi war crimes trials resulted in prison sentences for two score with two acquitted. Sentences averaged about seven years apiece.

4/10-4/16/49

4/10 Sunday Yesterday Sylvia drew "Ring O'Roses" (Nursery Rhymes) "Ming & Mehitabel" [sic] by Helen Sewell "Ola & Blakken" by D'Aulaire and "The Little Igloo" by L & J Beim. Eugene drew "Wakaima and the Clay Man" - African folk tales by Kalibola & Davis, "Dr. Doolittle's Caravan" by Lofting, "Old Tales Told Again" by  W. De La Mare and "Coot Club" by A. Ransome. Lil was supposed to go up [to] the country to look for a place with the Gallins' but Mayer Beckoff suddenly died and she went to the funeral. I took the kids over to Lil's to give Susan her birthday present - pyjamas. There we saw Peggy eating her lunch looking adorably healthy. She bent her head from side to side and dribbled her mush with gusto. Then we went up to Mom's. The kids drew - then we had supper. Canadian Sam Carr received 6 years for allegedly getting a passport for a Soviet agent. City College students voted 2700-1800 to strike for the dismissal of Knickerbocker and Davis. Jackie Robinson played in the first mixed baseball game in Georgia.

4/11 Eugene's report card showed A's, S's and 95 in spelling and arithmetic. The only criticism was that he erases on comp. and spelling papers. Chinese Communist armies attacked Nanking defences pending the gov'ts acceptance of surrender terms. Three year old Kathy Fiscus whose fate was the concern of the whole country since she fell down an abandoned well was finally extricated dead. She fell in Friday and rescuers had worked continually until today.

4/12 Eugene was fighting with a kid again. When he refused to sign a peace pact the kid choked him. Many Nazis were convicted of helping to exterminate the Jews, atrocities against Allied prisoners of war and aggressive warfare. About twenty City College strikers were arrested in a "riot" at the school.

4/13 Sylvia went to Carol Lamphear's birthday party. Eugene's hat was lost in the fracas yesterday. The UN voted 30-7 to debate the Mindszenty and Bulgarian trials as violations of human rights. The "House" passed the $5,380,000,000 E.R.P. bill 354-48. Lil & the kids had supper at Molly's.

4/14 Eugene is in bed again with a sore throat and slight temp. Sylvia worked on a book all day today of stories about children. A Mrs Jones wakes up one morning and feels she is going to have a baby. This is her obsession. Former party members continued to testify in the trial of the '12'. The main charge they bring out is that when the party was reconstituted in 1945 it aimed to carry out the Marxist-Leninist line of class struggle and violent revolution. An earthquake in the Pacific Northwest cost eight dead and $10,000,000 damage. 500 City College strikers picketed O'Dwyer in their struggle against discrimination. The I.L.W.U. in convention supported Bridges against Murray in the bitter intra C.I.O. struggle. The convention refused to accept the C.I.O.'s withdrawal from the W.F.T.U. Wallace Beery is dead at 64. 

4/15 Lillian called me home from work tonight. She had been feeling badly all day. When she finally took her temp. it was 103°. Dr. Holzman came and said it was a very bad throat. He prescribed sulfa every four hours throughout the first night. An icebag to prevent gland infection. Gargling with Bodell's [sic] followed by a throat swab with 10° [sic] argyrol. Plenty of fluids, ...  Lil's temp fell to 101.5 at 10:30 P.M. The UN assembly urged a voluntary curb on the veto 43-6.

 4/16 Lil's throat began to hurt more this morning. She had a bad night with little sleep. She felt better as the day progressed. Her temp was under 101°. Eugene got dressed and played around the house with Sylvia. The weather was too bad for outdoors. Sadie dropped in. She is here with the family.
