2/27-3/5/49

2/27 Sunday We went out to Mike's for Isabelle's 8th birthday. Present Sam & Molly Lilly F and her kids, July [Julia] & Sam, Dorothy and her husband, Dora and daughter Millicent, Celia. Evelyn made a delicious dinner with several pies and a wonderful birthday cake. Eugene led Isabel and Barbara in exciting make believe games. Sylvia was a lost sheep. 2 year old Marilyn F. recited "Yankee Doodle" and "Rock a bye baby" and "played" the piano. She is adorable. We gave Isabel $5 and a fun book and Mike a tie. Eugene got a U.S. jig saw puzzle and Sylvia a tea set. All guests got after shaving lotions and powder puffs for souvenirs.

2/28 Sylvia complained her cheek hurt her today. It is usually her ear which really hurts. She didn't go back to school after lunch. When she began to get very cranky we put her to bed and put some drops in her ear. Her temp was 99.5°. She worked on the weaving set Lillian got her after seeing a little girl with one in the subway yesterday. Incidentally Eugene timed the stations and entire ride with his new watch. A bakery strike and lock-out started. A 7 cent raise averted a strike by Edison workers.

3/1 Sylvia's temp reached 101.5° and Lillian called Dr. Holzman who diagnosed an inflamed throat. He prescribed the chocolate sulfa medicine. Sylvia has to gargle and have the inhalator on. Joe Louis announced his retirement from the ring as undefeated heavyweight champion. C. H. Towne died at 72.

3/2 Sylvia's temp was 99.8° in the morning and 100.4° at noon. She acts quite normally. Eugene asked Lillian if he could stay home from school today as the teacher had said some other kids could. The reason was Ash Wednesday! 14 of the 15 Protestant ministers on trial in Sofia pleaded guilty to charges but one denied espionage. In Budapest, defendants in a new trial repudiated their confessions as due to intimidation by police. Thorez called on sabotage to slow down arms production in Western Europe. Southern Senators are filibustering the Anti-filibuster proposal. Yonkers dismissed 500 city strikers under the Condon-Wadlin Law. Stalin announced drastic price reductions of 10-30% on a wide variety of foods clothing household articles etc.

3/3 Sylvia was normal all day. She played with the anagrams. Eugene got soaked to the skin battling in the snow. The U.S.C.P. joined other parties in pledging aid to Russia in an imperialist war against her.

3/4 Eugene and another boy had the best papers on "Gulliver's Travels". Sylvia is playing with the Golden Dictionary. Truman called C.P. leaders traitors for their statement supporting Russia in an imperialist war. Cardinal Spellman and 100 seminarians scabbed in a gravediggers strike. Forrestal resigned his Sec'y of Defense position with L.A. Johnson succeeding him.

3/5 Mom and Pop over and I did Pop's tax. Then to Crawfords where I ordered a suit (which we never got) as they didn't have my size in the one we liked - $31.96. Lillian has a slight cold and back ache. Sylvia was out of bed today. We took her out as the weather turned warm. Judge Medina over-ruled the jury challenge as expected and ordered the trial of the '12' to start. Vishinsky succeeded Molotov as Foreign Minister. Gromyko replaced Vishinsky as Deputy Minister.

The "which we never got" was added with a caret (obviously later).

2/20-2/26/49

2/20 Sunday I stayed in bed all day with a 100° temp. I had a sore throat and much phlegm. Lillian dosed me all day with tea, hot milk, vicks etc. Pop came over for a visit. The kids amused themselves all day by playing "cargo" building block houses with rooms and people, lassoing in which Pop joined. Eugene complete his 300 piece jig saw puzzle again. This time there were ten pieces missing, one more than last time. Mayor O'Dwyer has aroused the protests of countless groups and individuals by brazenly interfering in the Board of Higher Education choice of a president for Queens College. Although liberal Bryn J Hovde of the New School was choice of the majority of the "Board" O'Dwyer called the members to City Hall and demanded they name Dr. Margaret V Kiely.Yesterday Lil took the kids to the Lido to see a documentary "Louisiana" and "Code of Scotland Yard".

Since on last December 30th he reported "Ten pieces were missing at the end", the implied criticism appears unfair. Interestingly, regarding the first movie, Wikipedia says "Louisiana Story (1948) is a 78-minute black-and-white American film. Although the events and characters depicted are fictional, it is often misidentified as a documentary film, when in fact, it is a docufiction."

2/21 Stayed in bed again today although feeling better. Eugene played in the street after school with a younger girl and said he had a lot of fun. Sylvia got a star for drawing G. Washington about to chop down the cherry tree. Phila transit workers went back to work with an 8¢ raise on Quill's advice although the E.B. voted 23-9 to continue the strike. A Cultural and Scientific Conference for World Peace will be held here in late March with reps. from thirty countries including Russia, attending. An intra union battle in the U.A.W. has developed around the issue of the 3¢ wage cut due on Mar. 1 under the escalator clause 'won' by Reuther. Today a son was born to Milton and Shirley weighing 8 lbs. 2 oz. by Caesarian operation.

2/22 I felt better today and stayed out of bed. We spent part of the day watching the Gallins' new television. A 10 month hearing on jury discrimination in Jersey concluded with the judge conceding possibility of the charge having been proved. "Oliver Twist", with a particularly anti-seimitic version of Fagin was withdrawn from the British Zone of Germany of [sic] two days of violent demonstrations against the film by displaced Jews. The Army withdrew its 'spy' charge against Agnes Smedley but MacArthur's chief officer stuck to the charge. Miss Smedley stated she would sue MacArthur if he would waive immunity.

2/23 Eugene came home with a new quiz game. One is required to guess the title of a book with the aid of clues. Lillian guessed "Gulliver's Travels". Serious unemployment seems to be cropping up. Israel and Egypt have approved an armistice with de-militarization of many areas and retention of the Negev by Israel. Sylvia drew, without help, "Fuzzy Tail" by A. Sondergaard, "How The 'Rhino' got his Skin" Kipling "My Dog Rinty" by Tarry & Hallets [sic] and "The Fast Sooner Hound" by Conroy & BonTemps. Eugene drew "Black Beauty" "Pigtails" by Hekking, "Dr. Doolittle's Garden" - Lofting & "True and Untrue" - Norse Tales edited by S. Undset.

2/24 Lillian was busy at lunch time today and asked Sylvia to go back to school herself - which she did! The Finnish gov't won a 97-95 victory with left and right against[.] Wallace testified against the proposed $5,000,000,000 expenditure under the E.C.A.

2/25 Eugene got his "Captain Marvel" wrist watch from Sam and Molly. Sylvia merely wants some holes in the strap of her 10¢ wrist watch. This afternoon Lillian bought Sylvia the red raincoat and red boots she wanted so much. Eugene got a raincoat also. N.Y. Organized tenants visited Wash. to plead for stronger rent control. They received a lukewarm reception. The Armenian children who had been kept at a Catholic institution forcibly while their parents returned to Armenia will remain where they are according to an Appellate Court decision. Paul Gallico wrote an openly Anti-semitic article for the "Journal" which was yanked in a later edition.

2/26 Lillian went to see Shirley at the 5th Ave. Hospital bringing the carriage cover and sweater she crocheted for the baby. Judge Medina called an end to the jury challenge and ordered the trial of the '12' to start Mar. 7. The 15 Protestant churchmen went on trial in Bulgaria with the first two admitting their guilt in court. They were charged with espionage, treason and black marketing. Both Thorez and Togliatti have made successive speeches advocating their countrymen's solidarity with the Red Army should it appear on their native soil since the Red Army is not capable of aggression.

2/13-2/19/49

2/13 Sunday Eugene stayed in bed all day. His temp. did not reach 100° but he had to blow his nose continually. He amused himself by blowing his whistle and looking at the toy television. We did the diagramless puzzle and charades in the St Nich. Anthology. I played anagrams with Sylvia and lost 9-5. Lillian went to the funeral parlor to see the remains of Harry Friedland.

I see a few puzzles in the Anthology, some of which are filled in, presumably by me. But I don't see a diagramless puzzle.

2/14 Dr. Satozky came again today as he had promised on Saturday. He pronounced Eugene in good shape. Sylvia came home with a nice Valentine for Lillian. She went downstairs to play with the kids then voluntarily went into Norma's house to play. Eugene finished the diagramless puzzle (with our help). Truman and leading Washington officials snubbed the progressive "Nat'l Legislative Assembly to End Discrimination" delegates when they tried to get appointments for discussions. Gen'l Markos was relieved of his duties as military head of the Greek guerrillas and premier due to illness. Gen'l Ionnidis replaced him. Home from work

2/15 Eugene was up and around today, reading a lot of comics, playing records etc. The U.S. demanded a probe of alleged atrocities in Soviet slave labor camps at the UN. The A.F.L. had made the original charges. Anna L. Strong was accused of being a spy by the Russians and will be expelled!

2/16 Yesterday the temp. hit a high of 71°! Eugene was pushed by a boy in class and vowed to get even after school. Lillian found him rolling over the street with him. Lillian read "The Just and Unjust" by J.G. Cozzens. The U.S. Army opened a super secret trial of five suspected spies. Several former inmates of Soviet labor camps told of "horrors" there, at the UN session. A report claimed Russia ordered a purge of Protestants in Bulgaria.

2/17 Chaim Weizman took his oath as first President of Israel.

2/18 Carol was absent and the children asked Sylvia the words today. She knew them all. She was late this morning however as she dawdled. Eugene came home on a cold day so hot he wished he could take his shirt off. Attornies for C.P. leaders on trial questioned Jury clerk McKenzie for the fourth successive day on the existence of discriminatory lists. Read Mark Twain's "The Gilded Age". Fritz Kuhn was released in Germany and wishes to return here!

2/19 Sylvia has 66 stars. Judge Medina halted the quizzing of federal jury clerk McKenzie. Public housing maintenance workers started a protest action against wage freezing and cuts by the Housing Authority. Phila. transit workers rejected a 7¢ wage rise offer.
