2/8-2/14/48

2/8 Sunday We attended the banquet for Pop and Mr. Beagle at the Crestmore on Burnside Ave. Eugene had no one to play with but waited impatiently for the end of the speeches. Sylvia played with Barbara and Susan. The meal was good - vegetable soup, roast meat, derma, knischikloch [?]; ices, tea, strudel and the two birthday cakes. Pop's speech was filled with emotion as usual. At home resigned in a game of chess with Eugene.

2/9 Lillian went down to Macy's and bought a slip cover for the sofa reduced from $30 to $20. I took Eugene to the Windsor after school. We saw "Sea Devils" with McLaglen, Lupino and Preston Foster. Also "Allegheny Uprising" with John Wayne and Claire Trevor. Eugene enjoyed them. Sylvia cut a slit in her slacks because she didn't like them. Army Sec'y Royall said segregation in the Army would remain. Toledano and three others ousted by the C.T.M. have organized the "Popular Party" to oppose the government party, the P.R.I. Sweden won the Winter Olympics, U.S. finishing third. The Post P.M. Times & Home News all asked for Gerson's seating. Hungarian refugee Nagy testified Communism was the greatest menace to the world. Eugene Lyons asked for illegalization or registration. However Harvard Professor Powell said proof of the "foreign agent" charge would be necessary.Mordecai Brown is dead.

These kinds of things always interest me; Mordecai (Three Finger) Brown actually died on the fourteenth. This entry (2/9) is at the top of a right hand page; the entry for 2/14 is at the top of the following right hand page. My guess is that Dad went back to add this and turned to the wrong page; there was room on the last line of the entry to squeeze it in. He then later realized it was the wrong day, and crossed it off. There was not room on the last line of the 2/14 entry, so I guess he decided not to try and squeeze it in there.

2/10 Eugene's class got new spellers which have to be shared between two children. Sylvia built a block house for Eugene. Russia answered the State Dept with charges that the Western powers financed Hitler's rise to power. Some prices came down slightly in the stock slump. Former ambassador to Moscow Standley blamed all labor unrest in the US on the Communists at the "UnAmerican" hearings. A new Democratic Popular Front including the C.P. was formed in Italy. Lillian read "So Well Remembered" by James Hilton. Burns Mantle is dead at 74.

2/11 Eugene got a star for volunteering a story about Lincoln's honesty in school. Sylvia tried to put up some pictures on the wall with glue. Williamson was arrested for deportation. A. G. Hays opposed laws against "reds" at the hearing as anti-democratic. He praised some aspects of communist work. Greek guerrillas are twenty miles from Athens.

2/12 Lincoln's Birthday Eugene went to the free movies for the school kids at Walton. Sylvia likes to 'steal' my place at the dining table. The C.I.O. and President Murray were indicted on the political action provision of the Taft-Hartley Bill. Soviet leading musicians were criticized for bourgeois music productions. Ernst asked for publicizing of names of members of "subversive" orgs. He compared the C.P. to the "Klan". Berle endorsed registration of Communists. Moley urged a ban on the C.P. in elections. Military news from Greece will be censored after a U.S. officer boasted he saw action there. Eisenstein is dead at 50.

2/13 Lillian and the kids had their second 'flu' shots this morning at Dr. Holzman's. The kids take them very well. Greek mobs tormented a group of marching guerrilla captives in Salonika. Bakery unionists settled for 50¢ raise per day. Han Eisler may leave the country voluntarily. Lillian read Langston Hughes "Not Without Laughter" which she liked and Mauldin's "Up Front".

2/14 Eugene drew "Peter Pea" by Grishina "Daniel Boone" by E. Averill "Yes & No Stories" by the Papashvilys and Sylvia drew "Liz'beth Ann's Goat" by M. V. Provines. I gave Lil a box of candy for Valentine's Day while Eugene made a valentine for her in school.
