12/28/47-1/3/48

12/28 Sunday We went to the DeLuxe Theater in the East Bronx to see Disney's "Fun and Fancy Free" with Charlie McCarthy, Mickey Mouse, Donald Duck, etc. Also "The Spirit of West Point" the story of Army football greats Davis and Blanchard. Returning home we had quite an experience. Subway service was still delayed. We waited about twenty minutes on a bitterly cold open air platform then barely managed to squeeze into the 3rd Ave El that came along. Crowds at every station shoved and shouted like mad. The trip took us 1 1/2 hours.

12/29 Home from work due to an upset stomach. Lillian went to a half empty Alexanders and got long socks and a pair of pants for Eugene, a hat for Sylvia, gloves for herself and a sweater for me. The kids asked riddles of each other. Some questions (they were holding books from which they got hints) were "Is a wolf very nasty? Is a mouse the smallest creature? Does a dog have a lot of fur? What animal sleeps standing up? Is a crow easily fooled? Six kids played here this afternoon. Vivian S. was the teacher with pupils Gloria S., Joyce & Norma G. and Sylvia & Eugene. Played Eugene a chess game tonight. Auto Union and Negro leaders asked Wallace to run. The Greek C.P. and EAM were outlawed. Even sympathizers are subject to heavy penalties. Former King Victor Emmanuel of Italy is dead at 78.

12/30 Eugene drew "Tall Timber Tales" (Paul Bunyan) by D J McCormick "Stories From the Americas" collected by F. Henius "Dash & Dart" by M & C Buff - a story of two fawns. Sylvia drew "Down-Along Apple Market Street" by M. B. Hill. Wallace announced on a coast to coast broadcast that he would run as an independent candidate for President in 1948. Truman signed the Republican anti-inflation bill although he termed it woefully inadequate.

12/31 The kids drew pictures this morning. Wallace's program 1. Re-establishment of another UNRAA 2. Administration by the UN. 3. Priority to of relief to nations that suffered most from Axis aggression. 4. The fund to be used for peace only 5. Four power control of the Ruhr. King Michael abdicated the Romanian throne. "Gentlemen's Agreement" won the NY Film Critics award for 1947. 51 died in Palestine's bloodiest day.

1/1/48 New Years Day Sylvia had supper in Norma's house yesterday. No sooner had she closed the door upon her return then she made a wry face and complained of a stomach ache. She relieved herself soon however. Eugene went to play in Arnold P's house. Arnold recently had a successful operation at Johns Hopkins for his heart by Dr. Blalock. Today we failed to go to Anne's for Tante Blume's party due to my stomach upset and the bad weather. Lost a chess game to Eugene. A fierce battle is raging at Konitza between the Greek factions.

1/2 Molly over with the turkey for the shower. Train wrecks, tornadoes and sheets of ice ushered in the New Year. Electric wires are down throughout the City. The British seized two ships with 10000 Jews attempting to reach Palestine. Michigan won the Rose Bowl game over So. Calif. 49-0. The "Freedom Train" stopped at all Southern Cities but Memphis and Birmingham which insisted on segregation.

1/3 Today we had the shower for Shirley. It was a lovely affair with about 25 people. Molly & Milton, Evelyn & Isabel, Thelma, Shirley, her mother, four cousins, two friends, Kate Belop [?] and Abe, Katherine Falk, Ellie & Herb Friedland, Ray Cherniak, Frieda Kamen,

We had turkey, tongue, potato salad, cole slaw, cranberry sauce, soda, coffee and cake. Evelyn baked some wonderful cookies and a cake. The kids ran wild, "murdering" people all over the place and robbing banks. Eugene slammed a door on Sylvia, cutting her scalp rather badly. It was quite a surprise to Shirley  and she got some lovely presents. Milton took pictures. Won a chess game from him.

We threw out the kiddy car we bought Sylvia for her second birthday.

The first paragraph really did end with a comma; presumably Dad was planning to add other names later. The last group of names, except for Frieda Kamen, are not known to me, although some sound familiar.
